Ear piercing

Welcome all thoughts, good and bad. And where or where not? Opinions are one thing, criticizing another's is something not welcome.

Re: Ear piercing

  • I'm inclined to do it now while its easy to care for them but dh doesn't want to do it until she can ask. So we will probably wait till she ask.

  • I dont find it appropriate on an infant. We will wait until she can ask herself, then we will make it a fun mom-daughter day.

If I was going to have it done so young, I would have the ped do it, I know some offer the service.

  • I also think it's inappropriate for an infant. An 8 or 9 year old should be old enough to care for new piercings, and I don't see any reason to do it younger than that. I actually think it would be harder to care for on an infant. I cannot imagine my 5 mo staying still long enough for me to properly clean them.
  • I have a DS, but if I'm blessed with a DD next I would wait until she can ask for it and properly care for them. As all the other PP's mentioned, I agree with metal allergies, holes growing off center, and getting an infant to sit still long enough.

I had to have my ears pierced 3-4 times over my childhood because they would close up within 24-48 hours without earrings. So she needs to know responsibility.

They're extremely adorable on baby girls but I can admire on them, not mine.
  • My husband and I both agree not till not until our daughter is old enough to ask and care for them herself.  It in no way benefits the baby.

  • My LO will not have her ears pierced unless she wants them when she is older, and is able to care for them herself.

Another thing to consider is how your child will be with them a year or two from now. My brother and SIL had my niece's ears pierced when she was around 12 months old and a few months later, she had figured out how to take her earrings out. She wouldn't leave earrings in. She's now 3 and her holes have long since closed.

This. I have a hard enough time with her shots. There is no way i would willingly inflict unnecessary pain on my baby. : )
  • Both of my daughters ears were pierced at 4 months. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
  • It's not something I would do, but I don't really care what other parents do with their daughters.

Anecdotally, however, I had my ears pierced as a baby and they are uneven, whether it's because my ears just grew differently or I was squirming or what. I don;t know, but I find it very annoying.
  • I actually don't care if people choose to pierce their daughter's ears. I do think it looks cute but I will not be piercing my daughter's ears until she is older and wants then done. I didn't know so many people felt so negatively about it until reading opinions on the Bump. I don't think it's the evil act some people consider it to be but I agree it's not necessary or beneficial.

Mine were pierced at 3, almost 4 years old. I remember thinking it hurt but being so proud and thinking everyone must be noticing my new earrings. I figure it made such a lasting positive memory for me, I would like to share that with my daughter when and if she chooses.
  • not for me but think its cute!
  • I ended up getting hers done. She did great and they look great too!

  • I think its cute, but will wait until she can ask for it.
  • IMO, they are no big deal.
  • Had Ellas done they are adorable and she did great and does not even notice them
  • We had McKinley's done at 3 months. Her ped ok'd it and she didn't even notice. It's been over a month and no issues here!
