Baby Registry!

How soon after finding out the gender are you ladies creating your baby registries???

We've decided to do it this weekend. His family is already asking where am I registered and we just found out on Tuesday that we are having a girl!!!!!

Re: Baby Registry!

  • After I find out the SEX of my baby, I will probably start shopping around and deciding what I want to put on my registry.
  • Loading the player...
  • We won't be finding out the gender, but I guess we will start a registry soon. It seems a little too soon, but we want to use it as a list as well for the things we need to buy. Plus I have a feeling people will want to get things for Christmas.

  • I was wondering when people started them and what the heck to put on a registry.

Is there a list of suggested basics (preferably from moms and not stores!) anyone recommends?

I wasn't thinking I'd register until about November, but I'm starting to wonder if that's late!

AMA & SAIF. TTC #1 since Oct. 2010. DX: Unexplained. BFP on break after 32 months trying and 2 med cycles. Baby girl born at 40w0d!

Take it you opt for referring to sex rather than gender too! When we find out the sex we are throwing what we are calling a sex party! Our friends and family get our sense of humor. It'll be more of a typical party at our house with a ton of people, alcohol for people to spike their own lemonade or punch, etc.

I found Lucie's List (google it) really helpful.  If you sign up on the site you get a pdf print out with product comparisons - I like it a lot.

I haven't registered yet either, but www.lucieslist.com has a spreadsheet of recommended items that you can download. I found it helpful to start with, and also plan to ask my parent friends for their suggestions/advice too.

yes!! Sex and gender are two totally different things. It irks me to no end when people say gender when they really mean sex. Even my PCP asked me if we were finding out the gender!
  • ellajune2012: thanks! Two quick recommendations works for me!

  • I already have most of my registry put together on Amazon.com and my baby shower is two days before we'll find out the gender.  I used lucieslist.com to put the list together, it was super helpful especially since she gives two or three suggestions which I was then able to research.

  • We are having a gender reveal shower so we just registered last weekend since my mom sent out the invites. I wouldn't do it too early or at least keep an eye on your items. We registered for our wedding in January that was April to be ready for the showers etc and stuff we picked of course would go on clearance or become out of stock.
  • You can register as early as you want honestly.

Even without knowing the gender you can register for any items that may be gender neutral or at least begin doing your HW and looking into products that are top notch and see what does or doesn't fall into your budget.

I also encourage FTM's who plan on having multiple children to be conscious of what they choose for their registry.

Not that you have to, but I knew I would have multiple kids and therefore my nursery was neutral my, nursery bedding, stroller, car seats, pack and play, swing, bouncy chair etc.

It drives me nuts when folks who plan to have multiple children do gender specific larger items and then almost expect a 2nd shower because they don't want their little boy in a pink stroller.

  • Does anyone know of a good list of recommended registry items for twins? Tia :-)
  • Related to registries - I've received a few fliers (BBB, BRU) that say they give you a "goodie bag" if you register in person.  Are these worth the trip?  I love free stuff and coupons, but I love doing things online when I can more.  I'm also not a huge fan of sales people and remember that nonsense from registering for our wedding...
  • With DD I registered around 22wks. I also agree that registry cheat sheet from Lucie's List is great, and also recommend picking up the book Baby Bargains--it has a section for everything and rates different brands/models and makes recommendations for different price ranges.

You registered for a gender reveal party/shower? Are you also having a baby shower? Or are they combined? I've just never heard of that before.

I do agree that some items become out of stock if you register too early.

  • I have started my registry with the stroller and car seat DH and I picked out (ok, just me - i find what i really like and send it to him, he agrees without seeing other options, its a great system!) , and the bedding we decided on.  We find out 10/1 if the baby is a boy or girl, so I will probably go crazy and finish shortly after that!

  • Huge recommendation - I plan a lot of the baby showers here at work, and we do TONS of group gifts - usually a collection of $800-1000 so I typically can get tons of stuff of the registered list, but I've noticed that women that register so early at Babies R Us - the items are no longer available by the time the shower comes along. So either wait to register, or if you do - go back and check to see if the items you registered for are still available or have been discontinued and refresh your registry within 1 month of your baby shower - otherwise you may end up with a bunch of stuff you didn't register for. HAVE FUN!!!! I loved doing my wedding registry and can't wait to complete the baby one...

  • jbelle a lot of websites have suggested items for your registry. The bump has one as well. I think that one of the best tools is to come up with a comprehensive list (excel is probably good for that) and then start filling in the different brand recommendations you've received (or keeping them on an amazon wish list). Another suggestion I have is to ask your friends what they wish they had registered for (or for more of) that they didn't, and what they received that they didn't use. Most of my friends said they ended up needing to use more socks and burp cloths than they had! I think you also really need to envision your daily life and see what will fit in. What can you see yourself using? One person will tell you that you have to have a diaper genie (or like brand) one each floor of your house, others will tell you it's a waste of money. You have to find what's right for you! Another thing a lot of moms have suggested is to go minimal before baby comes, and see what baby ends up liking. I think you could split up the categories into baby essentials and mom essentials. For example, I thought of my stroller as a mom essential, since I know the baby would really be comfortable in any stroller. I chose the one with the best maneuverability etc for myself, because I walk every single day for around an hour. A diaper genie would be a mom essential not a baby essential. Diapers, swings, etc - all baby essentials and "preferences".

I just started mine at Target today and got a goodie bag :)  It had some coupons, pacifier, teething toy, aquaphor, trial size of wipes and two diapers, disposable nursing pads and breast milk bags.  I looooove freebies too lol.

@ceh789--At BRU, at least, the completion coupon is more if you start the registry in store. I was pissed because I started mine online and then went into the store to finish it. I still got the goodie bag (not worth much IMO), but I only got 10% for the coupon and it would have been 15% in store. (Another reason why I loathe BRU!)

  • I have already created a few but they are private. Just with essentials that gender don't matter for. I'm also having one of my showers quite early so I'm trying to prep as much as I can!
