Glucose tolerance test question

Has anyone heard that activity during the one hour glucose tolerance test can affect the results?  I failed my test.  I hadn't eaten anything for 3 hours before the test. I took the test at 13 weeks and I was fine.  This time, my husband dropped off my 2 kids near their naptime.  They were running wild in the lab, and one of them kept screaming on the floor.  He even pulled the alarm for help in the restroom.  I was definitely stressed out as I was trying to control them and I was so angry at my husband.  I just read on one website that you are supposed to sit and be relaxed for the one hour after consuming the drink.

Re: Glucose tolerance test question

  • It's my understanding that typically GD develops layer than 13 w so even if you passed then, it may just not have really developed yet.

I also understand that activity helps you metabolize the sugar faster so it's likely that chasing your kids would have given you a leg up at passing the test. Good luck on the 3 hr. I'm doing mine Saturday.

  • Thanks.  Good luck on your test, too.
  • I had to go to another area of the OB office for the bloodwork, so I walked around in between. Passed mine, so at least for me it didn't cause a fail. I'm not really sure movement could do that for sure or not.

  • Actually, walking/exercising after sugar intake or eating is better for you in terms of lowering your numbers. I have GD and taking a walk after meals really helps with getting good numbers. High stress levels, however, can spike up your numbers. In any case, the 3 hour test is a better way to determine if you really have GD. Good luck!

And even if you do have GD, it's really not the end of the world. I was quite bummed when I found out and struggled with it both emotionally and physically (because of the diet restrictions) the first few days, but it's actually been a blessing in disguise in terms of learning to eat healthier. I haven't gained much weight and my energy level has improved after following the diet. So, no matter what happens, please try to think positive.
