Cloth Diapering

Newbie! Need info!

Hey Mommies!

I am considering starting my LO (10months) on cloth diapers. I know, I know, I'm late. But I am also wanting to start stock piling for when we have a second baby.

I know NOTHING about cloth diapers. So, any information is helpful along with what brands are best!

Thank you!

Read the FAQ at the top of the board.

Watch Cloth Diapering 101 series on You Tube. (I think there's a series of 7 that was made by a former bumpie, but I don't remember the name.  Someone else should be able to help with that!)

I love www.greenmountaindiapers.com for descriptions of the different types of diapers and they have pictures of different sized babies wearing them.

Click the "new to cloth" links on kellyscloset or nickisdiapers

Lurk here  & ask any specific questions you may have.  It will probably take a good week or two of doing research before you really feel like you have a good feeling for what it's all about and what all you need.  That's not because CD'ing is that complicated, but more because there are a lot of options out there!

A couple other things most people miss:

1.) One-size diapers (OS) won't fit a newborn.  You need NB or small diapers for them.

2.) Most inserts are either made of synthetic, most commonly microfiber (MF), or natural fibers (cotton, bamboo, hemp).  MF can't touch baby's skin so it must be put in a pocket or under a layer of fleece, natural fibers can.  Natural fibers are more absorbent then MF and usually clean up a bit easier, but are more expensive in general.

3.) CD's need to be changed about every 2 hours.

4.) Everyone's "best" wash routine is different. You can make your wash routine as simple or as complicated as you want.  The biggest thing is use lot of water, don't use as much detergent as the detergent manufacturer recommends, and make sure you do a pre-rinse before the wash to get out all the poo/pee.

  • My little guy is almost 7 weeks, this is what I've learned so far: prefolds (jelly roll fold) and double gusset covers are the best for newborn poosplosions. We use Thirsties xsmall or duo size 1 covers. I haven't tried any other covers, other than a prowrap and I didn't care for it. Aplix is great for newborns.

We've started using pockets (Blueberry or Alva color snaps with the double gusset) for night time now that he's sleeping longer (about 5 hrs) and I prefer him to not sit in the wet cotton prefolds for so long. I stuff with the newborn MF insert it comes with and an Alva hemp behind it, love it! Also I plan to use pockets for daycare. Good luck!
