when is it too late to send birth announcements?

Three weeks after my son was born my mother came to visit and broke her hip, so for the past two months or so I have been taking care of her and my son. Then we moved. Unfortunately through all the chaos I forgot to send out the birth announcements we had ordered.

We don't know the proper etiquette- obviously sending them late is bad, we just want to make sure that if we send them it's not going to look like a cry to purchase us things but rather exactly what it is - a birth announcement. How late is too late to send them out?

I read somewhere (can't remember where, probably an article on here somewhere) that you have six months to send out announcements. Mine is three months and I still haven't sent all mine out!
