Found a boy or girl name! Whatcha think?

I've come up with Lorcan Maeve for a boy.  The middle name is pronounced mayve. Lorcan means Silent or Little Fierce One and Maeve means Intoxicating.  Just realized Maeve is a girl's name so I'm also debating Lorcan Ailill (all-yill), Ailill means Beauty or elf

The girl name i've chosen so far (but I may change if I find something easier to pronounce but just as unique) is Saoirse Evangeline. The first name is pronounced seer-sha and it means Freedom or Liberty and Evangeline means Bearer of Good News.  Also debating Evangeline Maeve or another name, still looking.

Don't respond to the post if you're just going to be a cunt.  Thanks.

Suggestions will be taken into consideration but I HATE super common names and i refuse to accept the name of anyone I know personally.

Re: Found a boy or girl name! Whatcha think?

  • I have feeling Saoirse would be mispronounced almost every time. On that note, it isn't a bad name. I love Evangeline.
I also really like the boy's name you've picked. Seems fitting for your style. I say go for it!

  • I really like Lorcan, but I see Maeve as a girl's name 100%. Maeve is the name of a Queen in Irish mythology as well as being known as the "queen of the fairies". If you love the name, use it for a girl.

I like Saoirse Evangeline and think its very pretty, but I do think there will be spelling and pronunciation issues with Saoirse.

  • I've never heard of Maeve on a boy, and I've definitely never heard of it being pronounced may-vee, but it's a mn, so do what you want I guess.
  • maeve is gorgeous for a girl

  • I would use Maeve Saoirse ( or saoirse maeve) for a girl and keep looking for a boy name. Lorcan makes me think of some kind of sci fi elf or something. What about Cian or Niall?

  • Well, I did find Maeve on a site with boys names but now I cant find that site.  Oops.  I could always do Evangeline Maeve to avoid the mispronunciation of anything like Saoirse would cause.

I'm also debating Lorcan Ailill (all-yill), Ailill means Beauty.
  • Gaelic pronunciation for Maeve is definitely May-vee.

If there is some personal or important meaning to the name for your family, then use Maeve.

Other middle name suggestions that sound nice paired with Lorcan:
    Lorcan Alexander
    Lorcan James
    Lorcan Wallace
    Lorcan Seamus
Lorcan ___ (any family names with significance?)

I'm all for using a unique name, but I think it works best paired with a more "normal" middle name so the child has something to fall back on if they don't like the unique first name they were given.

  • Agree that Maeve is All Girl. And I'm just not a fan of Lorcan -- it's a little too Lord of the Rings sounding for me (although I know that's a selling point for others so rock on if it's your style). I do love your girl name, even though many will stumble over the pronunciation. Evangeline is a personal favorite.

maeve was a warrior princess queen in legend and it is NOT pronounced may-vee

  • I just looked up the stats. Only 7 boys in the US were named Lorcan in 2012, 6 in 2011, 0 in 2010. No matter what middle name you use, it'll be unique.

But here are some super unique middle name suggestions:

    Lorcan Lysander
    Lorcan Cedric
    Lorcan Arcturus
    Lorcan Orion
    Lorcan Caelum
    Lorcan Godric
    Lorcan Cygnus
    Lorcan Pollux
    Lorcan Eomer
    Lorcan Fionn
    Lorcan Abraxus
    Lorcan Evander
    Lorcan Ignatius
    Lorcan Cornelius
    Lorcan Oisin
    Lorcan Darragh
    Lorcan Fergal
    Lorcan Desmond
    Lorcan Hugh

  • I love Evangeline. It's my DD's MN. I just want to point out that it definitely gives people a religious vibe (ie evangelist). It does mean "Messenger of good news" but "good news" = the Gospel. We love this because we are Christians but it turns off some people to the name, just FYI.

  • The girl name is ok. The boy name is terrible. Lorcan is weird (had to correct autocorrect; even my ipad hates it) and Maeve is a girl's name.

  • Saoirse is a guilty pleasure name for me, but I'm sure living in the midwest people would pronounce it wrong all the time. It would drive me nuts.

Lorcan isn't my style, sounds harsh.

    Love Maeve for a girl.

  • Love your girl name, it's unusual & beautiful. Not big on the boy name, Lorcan to me sounds like the race of a star trek character & Maeve is a girl name.

  • Hate Lorcan. I'd feel bad for the little boy. I'd also give the side eye if I saw it on a resume. I love your girl name though!

  • As pp mentioned, Lorcan sounds a little sci-fi to me and is nms, but I don't think it's terrible. Maeve, though, is all girl to me. I've never thought of it as male or even unisex.  I like another pp's suggestion of Lorcan Alexander.

Saoirse Evangeline is very pretty but people will have a really hard time pronouncing Saoirse. I know how to pronounce it and I still have to remind myself every time I see it.  What about Evangeline Saoirse?  Or Maeve Saoirse/Maeve Evangeline/Evangeline Maeve?

  • I keep changing my mind about most of the names, and I feel I will continue to do that until the baby is nearly born but the one thing I will not budge on is Lorcan as a first OR middle name. Thanks =]
  • Gaelic pronunciation for Maeve is definitely May-vee.
I used to live in Ireland and knew three. It is definitely not.

I actually like Lorcan. I asked about it once and it did not get any love, but it's a real (if unusual) name used on the correct gender, and neither spelling nor pronunciation is difficult, so go for it. I would probably pair it with a slightly more conventional middle, though.

Saoirse makes me hesitate because of the strong political ties. I really like Maeve Evangeline.

  • While I understand and support that you don't want to use any traditional names, you might consider a different MN from Maeve for your son in case he'd rather not go by Lorcan.

DD2 has a pretty unusual name and we decided to pick a very normal MN in case she didn't like her FN and wanted something a little more mainstream.

I like the combination of Saiorse Evangeline. It's NMS for me, but I think they sounds nice together.

Well Maeve is a traditional Irish name so....anyway. I haven't seen any suggestions of common either, just recognizable. Actually think Lorcan Graeme is nice.

Obviously I did respond to the Maeve comments, you just missed the post.

And just because people mentioned uncommon names it doesn't mean they're of the origin I prefer or even remotely appealing to me.
  • The last post you made about Maeve simply said that it "was definitely pronounced May-vee". It is not. I wouldn't use it if you plan to pronounce it incorrectly.

Lorcan is okay but I'm curious as to what you would do if you suddenly bumped into another Lorcan down the road. It may take off in popularity someday...we can't foresee the future. I think you should just go with the name you like.

As far as middle names go I see that previous posters have contributed several really nice names.

Lorcan Maeve sounds like a girl name to me because of Maeve. I don't love Lorcan but it's fine. I think it should be paired with a more masculine middle name like Patrick, Edward, etc. I see from PP that you don't want conventional names so those wouldn't work but there's gotta be some nontraditional names out there that are masculine that you like. My son is Dashel (or Dashiell) and I think Lorcan Dashel sounds cool.

I really like the sound of Saiorse Evangeline! BUT to use this name, I think you have to be okay with a lot of mispronunciation and misspelling. I couldn't use it because of that.

ETA: I also really like PP suggestion of Lorcan Graeme.

Agree. If you're going to be that hard core about UNCOMMON!&*!^!%! then these probably will suprise you with their rises in popularity.

  • I'm not completely sold on Lorcan, but it's grown on me as I've read through this.  Though I have to admit, when I first read it, I thought it said Lachlan, which is a name I like.  But, obviously, you love the name Lorcan, so go for it!

As for middle names, people have given a lot of varied suggestions, and you seem to not like any of them, and only respond rudely telling people to stop giving you suggestions, so I'm really not sure what you are looking for by posting here....
  • I will say firstly I love your girl name.  I do think both Saoirse and Evangeline may be a bit much together for my comfort but I love both names on their own.

Lorcan just sounds video game/medieval to me which just ims.   Maeve is a gorgeouse name- for a girl!

  • I love both of them! I am a big fan of different names and try to avoid popular names at all costs
  • Why do you people insist on responding to something I already admitted was wrong.  My source was wrong for the pronunciation of Maeve, get over it.

Also, I don't go to comic-con like things or even watch anything sci-fi.  I can name them whatever I like.

You actually only acknowledged that Maeve is a girls name and not a boy's name.

You didn't acknowledge that you were insisting on the wrong pronunciation of Maeve.  That's what most are harping on.

It's weird you are so passionate about a name you seem to know nothing about.

FWIW-- I think Lorcan is fine.  Obv you will have to come up with a new MN idea, but it's fine.

Evangeline is really pretty as well.
