Did anyone NOT get an NT scan?

My precious brother has Down syndrome and I was curious about the NT scan but then found out that my insurance didn't cover it and so DH and I decided against it. My doctor told me that when she does the ultrasound at 20 weeks she can tell if the baby will have problems with their spine, heart, kidneys, etc. and that babes with Down syndrome usually have fluid at the back of their head and have more of a flat face that is seen with the ultra sound. I was just wondering if anyone else didn't get one and whether or not you wish you had spent the money on it or not?

Re: Did anyone NOT get an NT scan?

  • We are not getting one because we have no reason to get it, no genetic issues, etc.

Does your doctor/insurance know your sibling has down syndrome?

  • We did not get one.
  • Yes I told my doctor. Down syndrome does not run in my family though, it was just a fluke, therefore I'm not at any higher risk than someone else. I definitely assumed that I would always get one but it was just going to be too expensive. I'm in the same boat as you though-it wouldn't change anything. I just know how hard it was for my mom to think she was having a "normal" baby and was shocked when hers had Down syndrome.
  • i didnt. i had an integrated screening but no NT

  • I didn't, where I live NT scans aren't usually given although they are starting to turn in that direction slowly.
I didn't get one last time either.

  • I did not. It wouldn't change anything for us and we'll see what we need to see at 20 weeks.

  • We haven't. Though we still have time to change our minds. It's not covered for is either but I priced it out and it would cost around $400.... So we'll see

  • We did not.  With a homebirth midwife we're paying for everthing OOP, which is fine, but we just don't do all the extra stuff when there's no real reason to (medical history, age, etc.).  We'll do the 18 week a/s scan and that's it.

  • We are not doing it either. It's too expensive, no family history, and we will find out what we need to know at the 20 week scan or at the birth.

Same here. I'm not sure that they are offered here. You can do bloodwork to test for abnormalities, and we will do that just to be safe.
  • I didn't either, got the blood test (yes, our of pocket). For $250 it was worth it for us, plus we were able to learn we're having a boy at only 11 weeks ;-)
  • I'm not getting one and I didn't with DS. Just didn't find it necessary especially since you get a lot of info from the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I don't think it'd be worth the money when you'll get an ultrasound at 20 weeks.

  • I didn't get one either. My insurance would cover it but I just didn't see the point. Regardless of the outcome we will love our baby with everything we have. I personally don't think knowing 7 months prior to the baby being born would help with the shock. I think it would add more stress worrying as to just praying for a healthy baby.
  • They wouldn't let us get one, only because we don't have history in the family. We did request it, but got shot down for that reason.
  • We are not getting it done. Our insurance will not cover it and we have no family history of issues.

  • My OB didn't offer it last time or this time. Probably because I'm young, with no family history of anything, and it's unlikely insurance would cover it. I would have done it if it were offered/covered by insurance.

    DS #2 - 4/2/14

  • I didn't get one either in my first pregnancy or this one. I just didn't want the stress of possibly seeing high odds when nothing at all might be wrong. I am not comfortable with the risk of doing an amnio to know for sure whether a problem exists. I feel the anatomy scan is sufficient to tell us anything we need to know to be prepared in the hospital for any special immediate needs the newborn may have.

  • my doctor is doing the blood test only, not the scan. not sure why but i trust her, and i have no genetic reasons to worry. i assume if blood tests come back abnormal she'll scan

  • Thanks everyone I appreciate it!
  • We did not get one either. We will just have our anatomy scan at 20 wks.
  • We did not. Our doctor said I was low risk and not really based on family history but more the age of the egg. I was a bit concerned because.my husband is 10 years older than me (apparently sperm age doesn't really matter unless he was significantly older). Anyway, I'm ok with our choice.

  • Nope, we're not doing it. I didn't with my twins and I won't this time. I tend to get very worried over things and if I get the news that I have increased odds I won't be able to enjoy my pregnancy at all, and this is the last one for us.

However, my dr. still does a 12 week u/s whether you get the NT scan or not, so I still get to see baby in 2 weeks! :)

I am the same way...a worrier. I just bought a doppler and my husband doesn't think Ill use it because I worry that Ill worry!! We don't get another ultrasound til 20 tho. I'd love to see the baby again before that!

  • We aren't doing it. Didn't want to pay extra for something that didn't matter to us. Either way we will be prepared for anything.
  • It's totally fine for women to choose against it, but the excuse "no genetic history" is annoying me because these chromosomal defects are flukes, genetic history or not. There's no such thing as being a carrier for downs.

  • As others have said, we're not doing any testing, it wouldn't change my decision about having the baby, and it would just make me worry throughout the pregnancy.

I was curious about this. My doctor said its more age of egg and that there are very few types that are linked to genetic history so I shouldn't factor that in.

Not only is family history not a factor at all, age of egg only raises your chances - but not all Downs babies are born to women over 35.  The vast majority of Down's Syndrome babies are born to mothers under 35.

You have to do what is right for you, but do so with all of the information.

None here. No genetic history. My sister actually ended up having undiagnosable mental and physical handicaps and that made me decide more than ever that I don't want the screening. I want to be excited for my baby and have no moments of doubt or trepidation about having this baby. It wouldn't change a thing for me and I prefer to trust what happens is how God wants it. It's a personal preference. I have no problem with people choosing to do it. I think we all prepare for the unknown differently.
  • I didn't with my first two pregnancies. I only got one this time because I wanted an ultrasound before 20 weeks.

  • Didn't get one. No point. Didn't do any testing actually
  • I have been with 3 different OB's offices in two different states and never once been offered and NT scan. I honestly wonder if they are as common as they seem on TB.

Either way, we choose to decline genetic testing. Our insurance does not cover NT scans, MaterniT21, etc., and I am not willing to do an amnio/CVS, so all we would have is the odds from basic blood work, not answers, so we choose to decline.

I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority of women having babies are under 35, so percentages would be more useful here.

  • We chose not to get one, because regardless of if our baby has issues or not, it's our baby. Not an option. We will love that little bean regardless of its chromosomes. :)
  • We're getting the scans and blood work done, but it's a standard test that is offered in my province, if not all of Canada, not sure. We thought it would be worth knowing.

  • I'm 28, a FSM and I am having the test done tomorrow morning. My doctor told me to schedule it, so I did -- I didn't think it through so thoroughly...
In any case, since it's non-invasive, I guess I'll have the comfort of more information. Or at least, I hope to.
