Do you eat blue cheese and ranch dressing at chain restaurants without knowing if it's pasteurized?

I've had such food aversion for so long. I'm starving but all food makes me nauseous just thinking about. (I know nothing new around here, huh?) All I really want right now is a buffalo chicken salad with blue cheese crumbles and ranch dressing from Chili's. When I called, they were unable to confirm if they were pasteurized.

  • I haven't run into this problem yet. I didn't even consider that ranch might pose a problem...

  • Never knew ranch was sometimes not pasteurized

  • I'm going to guess Chili's does not make their own dressing on site. If that's the case, then it's pasteurized.

Also, I'm sure it says that right on the giant tub of ranch that they are probably getting the dressing from, so whoever you got on the phone was just being lazy and didn't want to bother reading labels.

  • A chain restaurant is not going to risk serving unpasteurized dressings. And I have never heard ranch being on the "no" list.

  • I don't eat blue cheese, but had feta at Wildflower Bread Co the other day. It was an amazing salad and it felt great to have so many fresh greens. I feel that once in a blue moon, I can let this happen.
  • Nasty stuff I cant stand the smell...never would make it through the taste.
  • I am craving steak with blue cheese. And normally I hate the stuff. I am sure it is pasteurized. I think caeser dressing is the only one you really have to stear clear of.

I worked at a Chili's and they do make their own dressings. But that is not the point-any big chains in the US it's pasteurized.

I just had that exact salad for dinner tonight :) and it was delicious. I love feta and blue cheese. I ate it with my first pregnancy and I will continue to eat it with this pregnancy. Most restaurants will use pasteurized cheese. I feel comfortable eating it if its a clean and well established restaurant. I crave salads and I'm going to enjoy it!

I'll reitterate on the mozzarella, the Dr warned of FRESH mozzarella, not the packaged kind.

I got that, I've just never heard it.

    ;)
  • Never heard of ranch being unpasteurized, don't think anyone in the US would use unpasteurized milk in a dressing.

It's basically any fresh cheese, unpasteurized.
And 99% of fresh cheese in the US is pasteurized. I have eaten fresh mozzarella.
