Stomach bug and nursing

Charlie is 2.5 months old and I have been hit with an awful stomach bug. The people I caught it from said it only lasts 24 hours.

However my milk is pretty much nonexistent at this point (I have had vomiting and diarrhea for 4 hours). I am afraid to try and drink anything.

Has anyone been through this? Should I force myself to drink liquids? Can I give LO some frozen breast milk after he nurses if he's still hungry or will that mess up my supply? Did your lo catch it?

Re: Stomach bug and nursing

  • Oh no sorry to hear you are sick! GI bugs are the worst! If you aren't too nauseous I would let Lo latch and nurse what he can and then follow it with your frozen stash if you have it. Drink what you can to keep yourself from getting to dehydrated. if its self limiting to 24ish hours your milk supply will return back to what it was just either nurse or pump at the feeding intervals. Feel better soon!!

  • so bummed for you!
id totally just let babe nurse as much as often you can and supplement if LO still seems hungry.   if you are worried about it, add a pump session. i would also be sucking on ice cubes as much as possible.  every little bit helps.  hope youre better soon!
  • Sorry you're under the weather.  I second what PP said...if its a short bug it shouldn't affect your supply once you're feeling better.  Do the best you can and LO will help build that supply back once you're feeling up to it.

  • Sorry you got the bug, and I hope you're feeling better by now. It happened to me with D. She was barely 3 weeks old and I got it bad. Luckily she didn't get it and I did nurse through it. Your milk should come back fine, just rehydrate as soon as you can keep fluids down comforatably.

  • Hope you're feeling better.  This same thing happened to me when DD was 12 weeks old, and she did get it.  It was probably the most awful day that we ever had. I did my best to drink small amounts of water at a time.
