Strength training...

I don't do anything major, but honestly, I am out of breath after 30 squats. Or 8 reps of a 10lb dumbbell. I feel as though I should still be able to do these small tasks, and my muscle tone is sad lately. Anyone else? I walk/jog off and on, but the strength gets me for some reason now. I guess I always was that way but now I have to be more careful so I'm not sure how "ok" it is. Anyone? I'll ask the doctor but I haven't been yet.

Re: Strength training...

  • Hmm... I think I might be slightly more out of breath, but nothing huge.  I'm doing the same amount of weights, but not incorporating too many plyos in the strength training.  That's what was making my HR jump too high and get out of breath easy.  Running has definitely slowed down, but not really strength training.  Keep up those squats though!  I hear they really help with labor!

  • It's completely normal to be winded just getting out of bed at this point. Your body is working hard to build a placenta and grow a baby. Not to mention your body is now pumping almost 50% more blood through your body. You may definitely feel weak now and at times even stronger than before you were pregnant.

Definitely talk to your doc about any specific restrictions or advice specific to you. the general rule of thumb is to make sure you don't over do it, make sure you can talk, if you feel tired or sore or crampy stop and drink plenty of water. And be careful with form because relaxin is already setting in so you'll find you are more limber and this can hurt yourself easier.
