UO Thursday

Logged on this morning looking for this and don't see anyone has started it yet.
So let's hear those unpopular opinions ladies.  I'll try to think of a good one too.

I think this whole fast food "strike" is absurd. You want $15/hr? Do something to EARN it, like find another job or get an education to expand your options. This is just a prime example of the sense of entitlement that far too many American's have these days. It's all about thinking they deserve something for nothing.
ABSOFREAKINLUTELY!!  Seriously?!  $15 to work at the BK?!  whatever....you can't even find a temp job in an office with a degree for that.  I was listenting to the radio this morning and they interviewed some lady who was like "I have four kids and live in the city!  how am I supposed to live on min wage?!"  don't even get me started.....
    EXACTLY!!

Mine has a lot to do with the fast food bs also. It's not impossible to live on minimum wage, you just have to live a minimum lifestyle, don't like it? Fix it.

I saw an interview last night with one lady who said something along the lines of, "One of my paychecks was only $71!...SEVENTY-ONE DOLLARS!! How am I supposed to keep my cable turned on with that?"

    Grrrr......

She should do what I did when I lived off minimum wage....
    Don't have cable so simple!

My UO - I dislike the word Congrats.  It irritates me.  I don't know why people can't take two more seconds to type the entire word Congratulations.  It's right up there with when people type prolly instead of probably.
  • Are you serious? I didn't hear this until now.. but no.. there is no way it should be $15 I agree with the entitlement that american have.. what happened to working hard to better yourself? not just demanding more because you are too lazy to work for it.

I can't even get into this. Expecting companies to pay their employees a livable wage is considered an "entitlement" now? o.O

When what they're wanting is DOUBLE what they're earning now, yes. And going on strike to demand that much in pay? Yes. That's entitlement. It's like being whiny little brats, stomping their feet, wanting twice as much pay and doing nothing to earn it.

Do I think fast-food companies pay their employees crap? Yes. But I also don't think doubling their pay is the solution. Fast-food companies produce a low-cost product; if they went and dramatically increased their employee's wages it would gravely affect their profits, resulting in an increase in costs to the consumer.

I'm all about fair wages -- but $15/hr is not a fair wage to someone in the fast-food industry.

$15 an hour for fast food!!! You've got to be kidding me. I made $16 an hour in my first social work job after I graduated!

  • I don't know that this is an unpopular opinion, I just don't think it's the "norm" or typical one. But, I have had 0 anxiety about labor and delivery. I am not at all worried about it. I'm a FTM and I'm sure the anxiety will come when I'm in that moment. But for now, I'm not anxious or nervous!

  • Apparently some of you are missing the POINT of my UO -- Arranging a strike to demand a 50% increase in your pay is ridiculous.

I'm all for fair wages -- but to expect $15/hr in the fast food industry is absurd.

OMG. Fucking losers thinking they deserve to earn a living wage. I'm so tired of it. It's so fucking easy to get an education, totally cheap too. And once you have that education, the job offers just walk right up to you with a gorgeous salary and benefits package. Why the hell do they need $15 dollars an hour!?

ETA: in case it isn't clear, this is 100% sarcastic.
This isn't necessarily true for everyone.  I got a bachelors degree 4 years ago and was never able to find a job that I could apply it in.  The job I work now isn't minimum wage, but it's a job I could have gotten with just a high school diploma.  I also have a close friend that with a bachelors degree who has been out of work for the past few months.  The job market isn't as easy as you may think...

That being said, I still don't think that minimum wage should be raised that high.  The government looks at the cost of living and calculates a rate that one should be able to get by on with the bare minimums.  If fast food workers are wanting more "extras" like cable then yes, they should work their butts off to get a better job.

  • Wow. Apparently my UO is that I think people should be able to earn livable wages. I don't think it's about cable for most people, it's about food, rent, and utilities.

And it's not as easy as saying, FIX IT!

    Step One: "Fix it"
    Step Two: ????
    Step Three: Life is better!

Duh, why didn't they think of that.
    You forgot Step four: Profit!
Oh wait, that's what they're not doing. Lolol.

  • My UO is that I am not dying to have my baby right this second.  I am due on the 22nd and I have mentally prepared for that date.  Of course she will come when she is ready but I am enjoying my last few weeks of being a fat, waddling pregnant girl.

    I feel the same way

I felt that way until a few days ago. Now it's my EDD, and I want this baby out now. Haha.

Not sure if this is directed at me but I was echoing your sentiments. It is absurd. Then again, I chose a career field with notoriously low wages, so I'm not surprised that fast food workers would eventually make the same that I did in my first post-graduate job.

  • I'm sorry but my husband is a FF/Medic and he only makes $10.50 an hour.. and he has done HOURS of schooling.
This exactly.. Mine's a medic too. I don't know why but before dating him I always kind of figured medics start out at at least like $20/hr right?... Nope. He takes care of sick, dying people yet made around $10 starting out. And that's with proper schooling and up-to-date certifications. If no one here knows what a paramedic does, it's basically an ER nurse only in a mobile unit.
I don't have an opinion on the minimum wage debate. But I also believe striking for it is a little ridiculous, so IMO that's not an UO. I don't know how it all goes but if they pay their workers so little to keep their prices low, maybe if their prices skyrocketed to compensate for it, people would think twice about eating fast food.

My UO is I hate fast food and I never eat it, it's disgusting.

If the argument is that fast food workers can't live on minimum wage shouldn't we be fighting to raise minimum wage rather that just fighting to raise the wage for one type of workers? What about everyone else out there working for less than $15? I'm not saying we overpay workers and workers don't deserve more, I just think that there are a lot of professions out there working hard for minimum wage and I don't think that fast food workers are somehow more deserving than everyone else.

This mentality I agree with 100%.  It's like I said, I'm all about fair wages -- it's the $15/hr for fast food work that's chapping my ass and making me stabby.

I think our minimum wage in this country is pathetic. It makes it extremely difficult for people to get ahead and have the opportunities to do things to better their lives such as education or looking for other employment where doors might open for them, thus the cycle continues.

  • I want to go back to work so bad it's killing me!!! I don't even like my job that much but at least I felt like more than a slug laying in bed all day. Bed rest is important but I just miss being busy and having at least a little strength and normalcy, I can barely make it up the stairs from doing next to nothing...

  • Uhhhhh..... on the topic of the fast food... They can't even do their job!!!!!!! Why should they get paid more when they're doing stupid shit like giving people a cheeseburger... WITHOUT a burger actually in it??

You want more money? Go get a better job, or some schooling in order to do that! I don't make $15 an hour and I'm doing JUST fine.

This exactly. I worked at a McDonald's when I was 16, the minimum wage was $5.15 then, which for a high school student, was more than enough. But working at a fast food restaurant, while not glamorous, is extremely easy. Easiest job I've ever had. The fast food restaurants around here are full of teenagers that couldn't give two farts about their job. I just can't believe that they want an income that I make and I have bachelor's degree in microbiology.
  • If you can't figure out how to fix it then you don't want it bad enough . It's not impossible.

I have not heard of this nonsense. What??? My temp job that I got when we moved down here to Austin was in an office working with legal documents and I got $15/hr. I also have a degree. It was a big step down from what I was making before we moved, but I'd also been with that company for more than 10 years. No way that working at a McD's should pay the same as an office temp job.
