This is just a prime example of the sense of entitlement that far too many American's have these days. It's all about thinking they deserve something for nothing.
It's not impossible to live on minimum wage, you just have to live a minimum lifestyle, don't like it? Fix it.
I saw an interview last night with one lady who said something along the lines of, "One of my paychecks was only $71!...SEVENTY-ONE DOLLARS!! How am I supposed to keep my cable turned on with that?"
Grrrr......

She should do what I did when I lived off minimum wage....Don't have cable so simple!
My UO - I dislike the word Congrats. It irritates me. I don't know why people can't take two more seconds to type the entire word Congratulations. It's right up there with when people type prolly instead of probably.
When what they're wanting is DOUBLE what they're earning now, yes. And going on strike to demand that much in pay? Yes. That's entitlement. It's like being whiny little brats, stomping their feet, wanting twice as much pay and doing nothing to earn it.
Do I think fast-food companies pay their employees crap? Yes. But I also don't think doubling their pay is the solution. Fast-food companies produce a low-cost product; if they went and dramatically increased their employee's wages it would gravely affect their profits, resulting in an increase in costs to the consumer.
I'm all about fair wages -- but $15/hr is not a fair wage to someone in the fast-food industry.
And it's not as easy as saying, FIX IT!
Step One: "Fix it"
Step Two: ????
Step Three: Life is better!

$15 an hour for fast food!!! You've got to be kidding me. I made $16 an hour in my first social work job after I graduated!
Apparently some of you are missing the POINT of my UO -- Arranging a strike to demand a 50% increase in your pay is ridiculous.
I'm all for fair wages -- but to expect $15/hr in the fast food industry is absurd.
I had a single mom. Due to circumstances beyond her control she was unable to finish high school. She had three children to support on her own. To make ends meet she cleaned houses 40-50 hours a week. She made minimum wage.
With that money she had to put food on the table, clothe her children, and keep a roof over their heads. Forget about health care. We didn't have it. When we were sick, we were sick, too bad. When we were out of food (which was often) we had to go down to the food pantry and hope they would give us enough to last until the next paycheck.
When, exactly was she supposed to go to school to get this great education to get a "better job?" She did honest, hard, back-breaking work to support her family. I guess she shouldn't be expected to be paid what a college graduate would, since she's uneducated and all. Never mind that her job was 500x harder than mine, where I sit in a desk chair and make 75x what she made sweating and ruining her body. I guess it's just her fault own fault for choosing to feed her family instead of going back to school.
Not everyone lives in a merry world where there are two parents, or a chance at education to get further along in life. Personally, I think this type of thinking is what is wrong with America today.
That being said, I still don't think that minimum wage should be raised that high. The government looks at the cost of living and calculates a rate that one should be able to get by on with the bare minimums. If fast food workers are wanting more "extras" like cable then yes, they should work their butts off to get a better job.
Not sure if this is directed at me but I was echoing your sentiments. It is absurd. Then again, I chose a career field with notoriously low wages, so I'm not surprised that fast food workers would eventually make the same that I did in my first post-graduate job.
This mentality I agree with 100%. It's like I said, I'm all about fair wages -- it's the $15/hr for fast food work that's chapping my ass and making me stabby.
I think our minimum wage in this country is pathetic. It makes it extremely difficult for people to get ahead and have the opportunities to do things to better their lives such as education or looking for other employment where doors might open for them, thus the cycle continues.

Even better? I worked there with a college degree while I was out looking for a real job. Why? Because I'm never against any form of honest work. So try not to assume they all suck and are stupid.
I certainly don't think they should earn $15 an hour, but minimum wage blows and is not a living wage where I'm from.
My UO: Full length mirror should be banned in America. Any full length reflective surfaces.
