Gained a ton of weight so far? Come on in.

Re: Gained a ton of weight so far? Come on in.

  • 20 lbs here... and 10 of that in the last 6 weeks. :/

I'm not happy about it, but I do remember having a big spurt around this time in my last pregnancy, too. I even asked my doctor about it and she wasn't concerned. I exercise 6 days a week, but I also enjoy a nightly bowl of Ben & Jerry's...

Thanks for helping me keep it in perspective, ladies!

  • Thank you, thank you for all the honest answers! I was feeling so ashamed of my weight gain, thinking I was gaining way too much! My goal was to gain 25# but at 23 weeks I'm up 18. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna make my goal. None of my friends talk about weight so all I have to go on is what the pregnancy books say. My doc hasn't said anything negative about my weight gain. I thought he was just being nice though. Looks like I'm right on track with most of you ladies. Makes me feel so much better!
  • Also, wanted to add my son was 8 lb 13 oz and I probably left the hospital about 10 lb lighter. I'm not positive but I don't think it was any more than 10.

I've gained 27lbs so far. Annoying but I figure since I gained 60 with each of my previous children, it should be expected. Also my mother gained around 60 with my brother and I. My doctor says given my history, I'm "right on track". Still sucks though.

ETA: I only lost about 12lbs in the hospital both times...you'll be sad and surprised to see what you'll actually lose once the baby/fluid is out.
  • Regarding pp wight loss: I always wait like three weeks or so after baby to weigh myself and I highly recommend it. You're not going to lose a ton in the hospital - you're really only losing the baby's weight, placenta, and a little fluid, not much. However, a LOT of weight is water weight that you start shedding after the baby's born. My last pregnancy I went from 177 to 143 in those three weeks, just by not being pregnant anymore and BFing. But I'm sure if I had weighed right after the hospital it would have been more like 163. Ug!

  • I can't stop gaining weight no matter what. With my son I gained 100lbs, though 40 of it came off almost immediately. I had really bad pitting edema. I am now 24 weeks and have gained 40lbs. All my testing is fine so no health issues, but Something about my body and pregnancy. I am trying to just embrace the fact that I have a healthy baby and not dwell on my size. The weight will come off after like it did before. Here's to healthy babes.

I like this suggestion. I need to wait a while to weigh myself after my baby is born, otherwise I may have a mini panic attack. Def doing this!

  • Lost 10 lbs during first Tri but now up 10 lbs from my PrePregnancy weight. Gained this amazing 10 in the past 3 weeks so Im thinking I will receive a lecture at my visit on the 13th cause Im sure Ill be up much more by then. Wasn't a small girl to begin with

  • I've only gained 10 at my week 21 check up and I was shocked cause at 19 weeks I hadn't gained anything. Eeek!

The same thing happened to me!
  • As of last Friday I have gained 17lbs.(23w2d) I'm having twins though and  at first I wasn't gaining anything at all and they told me I needed to gain 2lbs a week for the following 9 weeks(at my 17 week appt with MFM...she said with twin pregnancies she likes to see 26 lbs by 26 weeks). So I've been pretty much along that track. I'm not as worried as I was at the beginning, I still have a little over 3 months to go with 2 babies growing, so I'm sure it'll start packing on!
  • I prefer not to look at numbers but rather how I feel/look when looking in the mirror! (Or so I tell myself lol)

That's how I am.  I don't weigh myself at home and the last time I was at the doc, I didn't look at the scale.  I only found out how much I weighed at that appt when I made the mistake of opening up the email they sent regarding the office visit (it shows all of your stats).  Everyone at work says I look good and DH swears I'm all boobs and belly but I do see it a little in my thighs.  I don't think I look like I've gained 23 lbs (as of 3 weeks ago) but it's still frustrating.

  • I have you ladies beat at 30lbs at 24 weeks... Yup.... 30 lbs.... Granted I was dieting when I got pregnant and had dropped 30 lbs so my doctor said that's why I gained it so fast but still... 30 lbs.... That's the mot I've gained ever... Sigh... Weight watchers it is after this little man is born!

  • I think I've gained 20 something pounds.  I silently freaked out a little at my last doctor's appointment, because her scale said I had gained a lot.  When I weighed myself at home on the digital scale, it was a little kinder to me.  I haven't weighed myself in a while, though, and now I'm tempted.  I think I'm going to stick with what my scale says, since the doctor's scale is an old rickety liar.

Is 20 really that bad though?  Over half way there.....

  • At 24 weeks I was up 26 lbs. It took me a while to gain, but then I caught up fast. My doctor isn't too concerned, but did mention that I may want to start walking as soon as it was cool enough outside. I've been stressed about it the whole time and worrying about gaining too much, but honestly as long as the baby is healthy and fine I'm over it. If I gain 35-40 pounds then I gain 35-40 pounds. I'll just work my butt off to get it off after I have him even if it takes me a while.
  • 19 at 24 weeks. I'm fine with whatever as long as I know I'm eating as healthy as possible.

I think you have the right attitude! I guess we all need to chill a bit and remember we have healthy babies on the way, weight watchers, running, Atkins, the treadmill, all these things will be there waiting for us!

Absolutely! I'm not going to worry until my doc starts to worry (I still hate getting on the scale).

Another thing I like to tell myself is that I weigh consistently at home -- in the morning, unclothed. Last time I weighed at the doctor's office, I was fully clothed and it was the middle of the day, after lunch. That's good for an extra 5 lbs or so, surely?? :p

  • My last check-up at 22 weeks I had gained a total of 19lbs. My next apt is next Thursday so I'll know my current weight then. I try not to stress it. I don't feel huge, I feel like its all belly and booty lol if the baby is healthy and my doctor doesn't seem concerned, I'm just going to continue to eat as healthy as possible and be happy that my little girl is nice and healthy :D
  • At my 22 week apt I was up 14 lbs and I was told it's a "Bit more than we would like to see". I'm really trying to be good this time because with DS #1 I gained around 60lbs. I lost 20 in a week after delivery and another 10 or 15 in a year after. Then I had my loss and I was depressed and had to have surgery due to complications from the d&c so I didn't work out as much I should have - gained 10 lbs and got pregnant again. I was 140lbs when I got pregnant with DS and went up to 203, I was about 175 when I got pregnant this time. I am beyond myself since I was always fit and hit the gym twice a day so I thought for sure I would lose the weight. WRONG. I'm also old (34) so that doesn't help. I really hope I don't gain too much this time so I can try to lose all of this extra weight.

  • My first pregnancy I gained 25 pounds by my a/s. I got a leture every appointment there after and it sucked. I know how you feel. Its the worst.

This exactly. I've gained about 25 lbs and I'm 23wks4days
  • Oh man, I'm up 23 pounds already! I'm 24 weeks...I wanted to only gain 25 pounds in TOTAL...you know, the recommended weight gain.

OMG...I can eat well all week long...then have a couple cookies (seriously, not that many) and BAM, I'm up 2 pounds for the week and it doesn't go back down. It's so frustrating because I really am eating within the suggested calories for pregnancy per day (because I track on MyFitnessPal) and yet the gain is at a much faster pace than the pregnancy gain charts I'm finding are telling me I should be.

What the heck is with that?!

  • I got a lecture from the doc yesterday and today am starting on a new diet. Yesterday I had to get rid of all the junk food in the house so I ate it. Yup I'm not ashamed. One last hoorahh before SO makes me eat super healthy for the next 3 months.

  • I just had my dr appt- I'm 23 weeks. I have only gained 6 lbs so far, which I was excited about, but she said I can only gain 15 over course of whole pregnancy! Really?! I know I didn't start out skinny(size 16) but that seems like no weight at all. I'm just going to try to be healthy.
  • I started my prenancy already 10 lbs up from my normal weight due to winter weight gain and laziness. So far I think I'm up around 17 pounds plus the 10 I would want to lose. I'm hoping to not gain more then 8-10 more but ya right with my lack of exercise and not perfect eating habits.

Wow that's not much. I think you're right - just try to eat healthy and see what happens. I hate when doctors say this kinda thing! What do they want us to do? Weight watchers won't even take us when we're pregnant!
