Has anyone used henna to dye their hair? I want a change, and i have reddish tones in my hair, so I thought of using henna. I know it's not bad to dye your hair the normal way, but I had some friends have their hair turn out in not-so-fun shades when they were pregnant due to the hormones. Plus, I kind of like the idea of using henna.
So, if anyone has used it:
Does it wash out too quickly? And is it a waste if your hairs darker?
Just wondering!
Re: Henna hair color
It can turn out a pretty intense red if you have light hair, but on other shades it varies based on the formula you use to mix it. What color hair do you have now? Is there any commercial hair color on any part of your hair currently?
My friend is blonde, and highlighted it to make i brighter, and it came out old lady pink.....and I was told by a hair dresser that that's fairly common, usually only in the blonde spectrum, but a few others can turn out badly...it one of those thigs that depends on you as a person, I guess.
Anyhoo! My hairs a darker brown, and I currently don't have any dye on any part of it (it finally all grew out and got chopped off)
I'm a stylist and I DO NOT recommend doing this. Henna has metallic salts in it and it's a B**** to get rid of. You most definitely cannot put box color over it, because it could smoke and turn funky colors. And in all honesty good luck finding anyone to fix it for you, if you go to a salon they will probably make you sign a release form. I would go to a salon and have them use a demi permanent. That takes just fine on pregnant hair. If your friend had bad color it was probably either with permanent color or bleach.
Good Luck!
Henna is great and does what it sets out to do, just make sure you are ready. It must grow out, because it will not wash out. If you are looking for a more temporary thing use a semi perm color instead.
Whichever you choose, post pics. I love seeing hair changes. Even the smallest changes make you feel completely refreshed sometimes
Good Luck!
Good to know!!
Thanks, ladies!
If your hair is a darker brown, henna will probably just make it a dark auburn. You want to make sure you are getting pure henna- anyhting that claims to dye a color other than red is not henna, because the dye from the henna plant can only be a red-orange color.
This is the website I get my henna from and it has a lot of great information:

I am a professional hairdresser and I just want to warn you that IF you use henna, you MUST continue to use it OR let it ALL grow out before you can use ANY other 'chemical' hair dye. It will create a reaction and best case scenario your hair will become a funny, non-removable colour (that you will have to grow out).
Benefits of henna -nice red colour if it suits you -makes hair very shiny -smells less strong when using (usually) -environmentally friendly
Benefits of regular dye -good brands (or salon work) makes your hair even more shiny for longer -Is not thought to be toxic either anymore -will not react with other dye later -can be used in a demi-permanent(long-lasting semi-permanent) so you can have it fade instead of chopping it all off
Personally I would never use henna as I like to change my haircolour too often- but if you really love the colour- go for it!!!! (maybe do a test strip first though?)
