Homemade Babyfood

Re: Homemade Babyfood

  • Another vote for BLW here. DS never had baby food. Like other have said, he's a great eater now, and I also think it helped develop his fine motor skills and whatnot, because he was handling all kinds of food from 6 months on. I'd suggest getting the BLW cookbook - lots of great recipes, plus plenty of information on the concept. Oh, and I second what pp said about it forcing us to eat better. When the whole family is having the same thing you want to make sure it's healthy!

I didn't read through this whole thread so sorry if it's already been mentioned, but you should look into Baby Led Weaning too. I think it's great that people want to feed their babies homemade food, but there's really no need to puree everything up.

ETA: I just scanned through the thread and this has already been discussed. :) I second what those mamas said. BLW was awesome for us!

  • I didn't read all of the responses, so sorry if I'm repeating...

We made all of DS's food when he started solids at 6 mo. It doesn't take much time and also got my mom on board so she made a number of things for us to freeze. I'm anti-baby-bullet etc. Basically, all you need is a regular blender or food processor (instead of one labelled "for baby" that does the same thing, costs more, and takes up more space). Some foods like banana and avocado are mashable as is. The others you just steam and then blend. We froze the purees in ice cube trays then popped them out and stored in freezer ziplocs. They seemed to freeze well for at least a month. I'd put 2-3 cubes in a little jar each day to sent with DS to daycare.

For more "exciting", but still pretty simple, recipes, I really like this book  - https://www.amazon.com/Top-Baby-Purees-Annabel-Karmel/dp/0743289579/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377696138&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+food+purees. It's split up by age too so you get a feel for what's good for a new eater vs when they are a little older.

On another note, I much preferred baby oatmeal to rice cereal. Rice cereal stopped up DS like nobody's business. It was horrible. But he loved baby oatmeal and it has lots of iron. Mixed with mashed banana was a favorite too.

  • we made a few purees - basically I would just make a side dish for our own dinner and then puree it. But once I found BLW, I never looked back. Amen to @AcaAwkward, it is totally the lazy parents way to feed! and about hummus @colleenswerb OH LORDY. my child still demands hummus on everything; apples, sandwiches, waffles. We go through a jumbo tub a week.

I had a beaba baby cook which I used and it was great.

I did BLW however at daycare they weren't into it when she was only 6 months so I guess I did half n half. The beaba was good, I would do a combo of whatever I had in the fridge. Usually a fruit /veg mixture. Then I would freeze in those cube trays, and send ziploc bags of frozen cubes to daycare every couple weeks.

I remember at thanksgiving when she was about 7 months old and my MIL was horrified when I just handed her a huge slice of turkey and she went to town on it. lol
