What is something parenting related that you are passionate about? Example: vaccination , BF, co-sleeping .
I can't get worked up about a lot of things: vaccinations are just sensible; breast is best but if I end up not being able to, I won't beat myself up; a drug-free birth is the plan but since I have no idea what sort of pain this is going to be like, I'm open to epidural, IV drugs whatever; cosleeping...eh. We borrowed a cosleeper from some friends, but I'm not sure how into that I'll be.
Something I think I am passionate about is raising my child vegetarian. DH is vegan and, prior to pregnancy, I had been vegetarian for about 8 years. I will let them try what interests them outside of the house, but inside our home, I won't be cooking meat. It's not really for ethical reasons, but more for health and environmental reasons -- we have a huge bounty of local food available to us, farms with quality food literally a mile in every direction, and raising a compassionate child who appreciates farming/farmers and where their food comes from is kind of important to me.
@superspecialsnowflake A great cheat on this recipe is to get, around Christmas, a can of Borden's egg nog and use that instead of making your own custard slurry. IT, TOO, IS AMAZING.
I'm joining in on the fun! Are you planning on having more children? How many would you ideally like? Will you be a SAHM?
Actually, we're pretty set on this being our one and only. I was an only child and we think we'd be able to do more for ourselves and our kid with just the one. (I mean, unless the universe has other plans...!) I actually work from home full-time, so in a sense I'll be a SAHM. But I really enjoy working, and it provides me with a nice sense of identity separate from my relationship to my husband and child, so we will be figuring out some combination of out-of-house care for our child along with my husband changing up his schedule to accommodate me working.
What's one action/behavior/mentality you had as a child or teenager that you want to try and steer your child away from through proactive parenting?
I had stupid low self-esteem and body image issues, so using neutral language when talking about these things, and not putting an emphasis on weight management when talking about eating will be key.
I'm totally both! I have two cats (who I call my first- and second-born, making this LO my third child...?) but I grew up with a very-beloved Collie who was born six months ahead of me, so we kind of grew up together.
We got married in the Catskill Mountains at an old summer camp -- our guests were able to stay on site, so we made it a whole weekend with a bonfire and live music and local beers. It was the best weekend of my life. Hurricane Irene had come through a few weeks before, and we weren't sure until the Tuesday before whether we'd be able to have our wedding there at all, so I still look back at that time and feel super fortunate. We donated to Irene relief in lieu of favors.
Sleeping as late as 12 or 1 on weekends, when I can swing it. Some people freak out like they're wasting on the day; not me. I relish every awesome second with my memory foam mattress.
No siblings! And my one SIL is kind of a distant, self-centered jerk, sadly. Was sort of looking forward to having a relationship with a sibling-in-law, but seems like it's just not in the cards.
Ugh, the trip my dad dragged us on to Virginia Beach right after my mom's mom passed away when I was a teenager. She had lingered and it was tough on everybody, but none of us were really ready to try to move past it and I remember there were a lot of tears and arguing on all sides. The one time I truly didn't enjoy time away from home.

If you could go back in time and erase one person you've dated, who would it be and why?
The guy right before DH -- I just stayed out of laziness, if that makes any sense. By the time we broke up, we really, really didn't like each other anymore. Luckily, we didn't have many people in common so it was a fairly clean break, but that relationship was about a year long when it should have been more like a couple of months.
If you had a million dollars, what is the first thing you would buy?
I'd pay off my student loans, but that's a boring answer.
I'd buy a second house -- assuming we ever get a closing date for house number one. I'd buy a little land in the Ausable Club in the Adirondack Mountains and build a nice little house -- we'd get views of the High Peaks and hiking trail access, be right outside our favorite town, and DH would have rights to play the golf course and I could use the pool.
Name 5 people living or dead you would invite to dinner. You can not include your DH.
And asking all the questions in a row just earned me something called a Spam Block? @ColeRose...help?
Oh no! Spam block? The new Bump is...too automated.
This was a great question. I'd invite to dinner some of my personal heroes and hope they all ended up entertaining each other: favorite essayist John McPhee (alive), the existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (dead), Mel Brooks (alive), the author David Rakoff (dead), and, what the hell, Rachel Maddow (alive) because she lives an hour away from me and afterward maybe we could be friends.
I would have included Bob Dylan, but I feel like he'd probably be a super quiet dinner guest.
I haven't. In the early 80s, New York State still had closed adoptions, so the records of my birth, time in foster care, and subsequent adoption are sealed. I do have some limited information, including the fact that my birth mother was a teenager. There are avenues I could explore to find out more, but largely, I've made my peace with not knowing.

I'm the product of a teen mom too. I think we turned out well.
Haha, you type too fast for everyone. I can't believe you got all of those questions without anyone in the middle. Good job!
OP, What are your thoughts on chickens? Live ones that is. This is very important.
I am really hoping this a reference to the comment on the placenta thread that was like, "If a chicken ran out of my vagina looking like a placenta does when it comes out, I wouldn't be eating chicken, either." Because I about died.
Chickens? They eat ticks, so that's good. And I like fresh eggs. But I don't think keeping them in a city is a good idea, just in the country -- which is sad for me to say since ALL my father's aunts and uncles kept chickens in their yards in Queens, NY in the 40s and 50s. And I'm obviously anti-factory farming chicken.
We have to keep this going every Tuesday, I feel like I really "know" you now @northport6! It's so interesting to read everything and @KateMW, great work with all the questions!
Re: AMA Tuesday
A reason to smile on an already cranky wednesday.
