Nap time Drama

Ever since Dean turned 3 months it is a trial to get him to nap. He takes 3-4 naps a day, one long in the morning and afternoon, and 1-2 20 min naps in between. He does not want to nap, period. He is tired, rubbing his eyes, yawning, nice and full, dry diaper, and the instant I put him down to nap he starts crying. It isn't even a mad cry, it is a very whiny cry and lasts about 5 minutes minimum. If I continue to hold him trying to lull him to sleep while singing or rocking, he only gets more upset and will start to seriously cry. I have no idea what to do. Will this ever stop? I've tried singing, rocking, walking, his swing, sleeping in other places besides his crib, and baby wearing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Hearing him cry everyday multiple times a day is really wearing on me.

Re: Nap time Drama

  • I can offer sympathy. We've been having a hard time napping here too. My LO shows obvious signs of being tired, so I put her down, and she fusses and whines, sometimes for a long time. It can get on my nerves. Her face will be bright red from her rubbing her eyes. She doesn't cry, but she has this high pitched squeal that hurts the eardrums. I'm trying to figure out what works. Sometimes certain tactics work, sometimes not.

Do you put him down as soon as he starts showing signs? I've been trying to get better at this, since my LO has a harder time if she gets overtired. My LO also gets distracted easily, so if she doesn't fall asleep in her crib, I'll put her on our bed because our bedroom is darker during the day than hers, plus I play white noise. It seems to help her. I would prefer she take all her naps in her crib, but that's a battle I don't feel like fighting at the moment.

Have you tried just letting him whine for a while without any intervention? When my LO whines, I don't tend to her right away, I let her whine for a few minutes, then help her by putting the pacifier back in her mouth, caressing her head, and shhhhhing. It often works for her.
