NWMR: creepy or normal online research?

So, I think perhaps this is a spin-off of my job in fundraising, but I've noticed that when I meet new people, I end up doing a quick online research check on them. I.e. I Googled people from our neighborhood picnic to find out where they work/what they do. Sometimes I see if they are on boards or involved with local organizations. Is this normal and something everyone does, fundraising or not, or is this weird? Just curious. :)

    I've never done that. If I meet someone I'd like to be friends with I will Facebook them.

    I don't routinely do this but I work with someone who ccaps every person they meet.  Ccap is the online State of Wisconsin court records search. 

    Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

    Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    Maybe checked out a LinkedIn or a facebook profile page after I've met them, but that's about it.

    I research things for a living but I never check up on people in my personal life, no. I'd call it more nosy than creepy.

    I have done searches here and there.  Like we are partnered up with a family from DS's school.  I did google them to find out where they worked to get a feel for what I would have in common with them....my husband also has googled another school mom because frankly she is intriguing.
    So if it was excessive, it may border creepy but I think a random search every once in a while is pretty normal.

    Oh, good, I'm less creepy than I was starting to think I might be. :) 

    CCAP (state court records) is awesome, too, but I usually reserve that for nannies and babysitters.

    Like LibraryChica I have also looked up property records when I forget a neighbor's name! 

    Also if it's PUBLIC information online it's not snooping, or creepy.  Definitely nosy.  But oh well.  I have to look up so much on people for work it's kind of "normal" to me.  Also I did look up mortgage docs to see how much my neighbors paid for their new house across the street and how much they took out a mortgage for... Oh well.  It's all public record at the county recorder of deeds website.  

    I don't usually look up friends' info online.
