Working Moms

Pumping Questions..

FTM here and have a 6 week old. I'm returning to work the beginning of October. Work a typical 7:30am - 5:30pm Mon - Fri job and have the weekends off. I'll be pumping 3 times at work, nursing before we drop at daycare and nursing in the evening/night. My question is, those of you who are in the same boat, do you pump at all during the weekend or do you strictly nurse? TIA!

I pump once in the morning on weekends to try to get ahead. With DS1 eventually I needed to do that just to keep up.

I usually wait until LO is taking his 1st nap.

  • During the week I would wake up and nurse, then pump (always engorged lol) and then pumped twice at work, nurse when I got home and once before dinner. I would try and pump before bed but not much left. I would only pump on the weekend after first nursing due to engorgement then feed on demand and once before bed.

  • I wake up before DD (thanks to the dog wanting his breakfast) and pump right away on Saturdays and Sundays.  I typically pump 8-10oz since she usually STTN, and DH gives her a 4oz bottle when she wakes up.  Those extra ounces give us a good buffer for the week.
  • I don't pump on the weekends if I can help it. It's not a fun experience, and I'd rather spend the time with the kiddo. If I get to the point where I'm short for bottles, I'd consider adding a pumping session in the mornings, but not just for the sake of building a stash.

  • I'm done now but the whole year I had to do an additional 4th pump every night after LO went to bed to pump enough for the next day. I did that on the weekends too since that was my only way to build up an extra stash.
On the weekends I also sometimes pumped the other side in the morning once she was STTN, but that was really for my comfort.

  • I pumped in the morning about an hour after nursing weekend mornings while I was working to build a stash (we had a 4 day vacation without baby I needed to stock up for).  Once I got past that, I did continue some morning pumping, but only as I felt I needed to (didn't get enough on Friday for Monday, or something).  I also pumped in the evenings after LO was down for the night too (waited closer to 2 hours for that pump session, he goes down at 7 and STTN) if I didn't get enough in the day.  We finished pumping last week and today's my first day to not pump at work!
  • I used to pump with DS1 on the weekends while I fed him breakfast bc I had a hard time keeping up with him during the week. I don't pump at all on the weekends (unless its to replace a feeding) with DS2 bc I am able to pump enough at work.

  • I pumped on the weekends for a while just because I was so panicky about having a freezer stash.  I stopped a few months ago and its been fine.  I would only pump on the weekend if you feel like you need extra milk during the week.

  • I never pumped on the weekends, its annoying and theres not enough time between actually feeding the baby.  I probably should have pumped more b/c I pumped 2x/day and supplemented with a little formula.  I'd rather give the baby some formula rather than spend more of my time pumping.  I loved BFing but Hated pumping.

  • Thanks for the help, ladies! Lots to consider. I think I'll see how my supply goes once I do start back to work.

  • I pumped while I was on maternity leave so I built up a freezer stash.  I pumped once in the AM and once in the afternoon.  I recommend doing this.    I eventually dropped the afternoon pump and just pumped in the morning when I was on maternity leave.  I do not pump enough at work every day for Maddie.  I'm so glad I have the freezer stash.   Because I have so much freezer stash, I do not pump on the weekends.  If I need to, I will, but right now I am still good for milk.
