Not deodorants, but AP, as that's what blocks sweat.

  • They have aluminum in them, which is why some people avoid them. There's not conclusive evidence they're harmful.

  • I've never heard that it isn't safe. I never use deodorant or antiperspirant during pregnancy because it's the first smell that makes me sick every time. My aversions are always scented products, i.e. shampoo, detergent, perfume, deodorant/antiperspirant, anything by Glade, etc...  I start gagging and heaving every time I step into the shower.

  • I use Crystal body deodorant (I think it's made of minerals). I love it.I buy at whole food market. I chose it to have greener alternative to deodorants since breast cancer runs in my mother's family.
  • I still use my normal anti-perspirant.  I sweat a lot, so I can't get by on deodorant alone, and I've tried the natural stuff and it just doesn't work for me.  At all.  I agree -- I'm not eating the stuff.  It's a very small amount that gets absorbed into my skin.  If it was unsafe, my doctor would have told me to avoid it.

I'm still using my lotion, shampoo, conditioner, makeup, etc....I try to use natural products when I can, but honestly I'm just not that worried about this.  I do agree that the US should regulate it's products more...but I live in the UK where there is a lot of regulation, so the products here are generally safer anyway.

  • I've been making my own for over two years using coconut oil, baking soda and corn starch.  I works better for me than any regular deodorant I've ever used.

  • All my girlfriends used it while pregnant... No issues. (I asked recently because I was curious too!)
  • I'm a major sweater. I use homemade deodorant and it works better than anything I've ever used. It has bees wax that I think helps with sweating.

  • I've used Toms and will continue to use it. My midwife group didn't mention anything regarding hygienic products when listing what not to use/consume prior to my first appt which is September 10th.

  • I use my regular AP because I think I stink more when pregnant. but, when not pregnant, I sometimes use Adidas deo with cotton technology. I'm a sweaty gal and it still keeps me dry.

  • Just because your doc says it's safe doesn't mean it is. Med docs get way to much credit. They used to endorse smoking as safe. There's aluminum and crap in deodorant&ap. All skin products get absorbed through the skin and into your bloodstream. While it is a small amount day after day, year after year, these products add up. I'd find a natural alternative and be a little sweaty for 9 months. I use Toms but want to try that Crystal stuff from Whole Foods.

I am a sweaty MFer. Just being a little extra sweaty for 9 months would NOT work for me.

THIS. I'm pretty sure someone would have to pull me aside for a deodorant intervention if I tried to get away with anything other than my dove.

  • Dove clinical didn't even put a dent in my sweating.

  • So, i used Toms yesterday, and i was sweating uncontrollably! I used Dove this morning.  Will try to go to WF and get the crystal kind today.  thanks ladies!
  • @ColleenSwerb thank for making me feel normal for using my same old shampoo!!
No problem. I'm like, the worst pregnant woman ever, but I own it. I like to make ppl feel better about themselves, lol. I am a sweaty MFer. Just being a little extra sweaty for 9 months would NOT work for me. Dove Clinical is about all that works for me.
I feel like I could maybe give you a run for your money on being the worst pregnant woman ever, haha. I really don't care about/follow most of the recommendations and my son seems pretty okay so I'll take my chances with this baby too. The only thing I changed from pre-pregnancy was I stopped drinking and I use Tylenol instead of ibuprofen. I figure if my midwife isn't concerned, why should I be?
