Brushing teeth

Ok mamas, I need your tips and tricks for getting a stubborn toddler to brush his teeth. For awhile he would sort of let us brush if he got to hold his own toothbrush. Lately though, he is having none of it. I even got a spin brush today but he was scared of it, lol! I don't want to force him because geez, I don't need another thing to fight with him about, but he has a bunch of teeth that need to be brushed! I'm hoping this is just a phase because his first molars are coming in (all 4 at once!!). But still, he wasn't super into it before either. So, what do you do to get your kiddo's teeth brushed??

Re: Brushing teeth

  • @Excited30 posted a toothbrushing song a while back and we use that.  I know it has 2 verses, but we just do one (mostly because when we started it, I could only remember one verse, and I just stuck with that because it works for us).  I also give him another brush to hold.  Also, there are times when he's being really stubborn about it that I let him brush at first, then I take the brush and get in there and actually do a good job, then we swap back and forth.  But mostly, since I started singing the song, he's pretty content.

It's to the tune of "Do Your Ears Hang Low?"
Are your teeth clean and white?
Do you brush them day and night?
Do you brush them up and down?
Do you brush them left and right?
Do you rinse with a swish,
    Making faces like a fish?
Are your teeth clean and white?

And oh man, molars are ROUGH!!!  DS got 2 within just a couple of days of each other, then a couple of weeks later, the other two popped through.  I'm SO glad they are all done.  Just the canines left and we'll have a nice break until the 2 year molars start to come in.  I seriously wish they could just get all their teeth at once.  I swear, DS has been teething for a year straight.

  • Thanks ladies. I sang the tooth brushing song and he gave me a perplexed look and said, "No?", lol. We'll keep trying.
  • We let dd sit on the counter to brush. It makes her happy to look at herself in the mirror.

He said no?  lol.... that is quite funny.  I probably would have laughed on the spot with that response to my own singing.  I do hope that you find something that works for you and your son.  I'm sure you will at one point.

This kid cracks me up all day long. Last night I got him laughing with a much simpler and sillier song, and he let me brush a little. This morning not so much. Sometimes he lets us when he's in the bath.
