Lunch meat

Seriously, it's all I want!! Of course a sub would be wonderful!!! Someone tell me it's okay to eat! ;( Turkey, ham, salami, omg. Any ideas to curb this craving? Or ways around the rule??

Re: Lunch meat

  • I don't follow the lunch meat rule. I don't eat it all the time, but when I want it, I have it.

  • You could always toast the sandwich or cook the meat. Every dr has different recommendations, but my dr advised that it was ok to eat as long as I got it freshly cut from the deli, and it wasn't pre-packaged. He was more concerned with making sure I wash all of my produce very well than he was deli meat.
  • My doctor told me it was fine as long as you get it fresh cut from the deli. He told me he wouldn't recommend pre sliced pre packaged lunch meat

  • Eat it. You can have it heated to steaming, then allow it to cool a little and then make the sandwich if that makes you feel more comfortable. I just eat it anyways, as long as it's from a reputable place. I wouldn't go to Subway and get it, but fresh cut from a deli..yes.

  • It's fine, just nuke the meat till it's steaming (about 15-20 seconds) to be sure.  The thing with lunchmeat is opinion and your comfort level.  I'm a little more cautious so I avoid if unless I really want it, but then if I do I make sure to heat it.  My OB says it's fine as long as it's heated, whereas my RE says NO lunchmeat whatsoever.  It's up to you.

  • You're allowed to eat it if you heat it and then let it cool. Nuke it for 30 seconds and then lay it on paper towels to cool down. Enjoy!

  • I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago because I wanted a turkey sandwich from subway SO bad. I went ahead and got one and had them toast it. Today I actually ate a cold turkey sandwich at Jasons Deli. Yesterday I ate salad at Mazzios. I keep forgetting they are "no no's". I'm sure we will be fine! :) Eat your sandwich!!!

I was on the verge of caving (my doctor told me to avoid it, but I just don't know how strongly I feel about it), but then I found this deli across the street from my work that makes their own roast turkey and roast beef.  They roast the whole turkey there, and then cut it up really thin like regular deli meat.  I might actually never transition back because it was SO delicious!  If you're not comfortable just eating the sandwich, you could always try to find something like that.
  • Depends on your comfort level.  I just have them toast mine.

  • This is one that I think is probably fine.  That WSJ article from the economist who looked at the statistics behind pregnancy rules made sense to me... the lunch meat rule is due to the risk of listeria... which isn't terribly common in deli meat, and is just as common in fresh fruits and veggies (as a previous poster said, cantaloupe)....  So my take is that if you're sure and comfortable with the source, it's probably not much of a risk.  (The sodium and other fillers in some deli meat is more questionable to me.)

I've had JJs as well - we have one right at our work so it's too tempting.  BUT I'm a freak and I heated up the meat before eating it.

  • I had Subway and didn't heat it. *shrug* I've also had sushi from a place I go to all the time and trust. From the research I've done, I'm much more concerned about contaminated fruits or vegetables.
  • My doctor told me to just "BE NORMAL" during my pregnancy and not stress over everything I eat and all the "rules" (lunchmeat, sushi, etc.)  His example was...think of the cave men eating dirt, and pregnant women drinking and smoking through the 1960s...yes, we have learned a lot (I'm not suggesting smoking), but may have swung a little too far in the other direction when it comes to pregnancy rules to follow.  His advice made me feel a lot more relaxed and empowered to make whatever food choices I am personally comfortable with.  I hope this is helpful to you too!
