Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep training and do we need it?

I've been trying to search everywhere for the ins and outs of sleep training and if we need it. LO is 16 weeks and gets up once per night. She goes down between 9 and 10 every night. I tend to get between 5 and 6 hours of sleep before I get woken by her. Out of instinct I get up and go to her to nurse. Should I be ignoring this and let her fuss it out? I've googled to see what is considered STTN and at what point people sleep train - is it if the babes are waking more than once a night? Trying to figure all this out and appreciate all the help, insight, etc.

Re: Sleep training and do we need it?

  • Waking up only once a night to feed sounds about right at 16 weeks. Some parents get lucky and their kids STTN without waking but I believe 5 to 6 hour stretches at this age is considered STTN.

  • I don't think you need to do anything. I consider 5-6 hours sleeping through the night. I don't do sleep training but some people do and it works for them. Babies will still eventually sleep through the night and learn to put themselves to sleep. I never taught my kids, I nursed them to sleep which turned in to rocking them to sleep which turned in to story time before bed. I am going to do the same with baby A. It really just depends on you. Is it something you feel you need to do and something you want to do?

Some babies do need to eat at night and it's perfectly normal for some babies to wake during the night even at one year old. Read up on different methods and alternatives and see what you feel comfortable with.

  • I've always been told that if they sleep 6 hrs is considered sleeping through the night. If you want to work on anything you can try putting them to sleep awake or drowsy. Learning to self soothe is awesome down the road. I started so it with both my kids from the get go and its helped tremendously later. Good luck!!

  • I think if your baby is getting up once to eat at16 weeks, you are fine. With only one time, I don't think you consider weaning at night until maybe 9 months-even at 6 months it'll still be reasonable.

The only other suggestion I have is to see if she'll eat more during the day, but since you're nursing that's hard to tell. Your baby is doing great-some babies still get up 2-3x per night at 16 weeks and this is still considered somewhat normal.
