Whats one thing worth splurging on?

I have only done a little baby shopping so far (some little outfits, a couple rattles/binkies, etc) and want to start doing the 'real' shopping. DH and I don't have a lot of money right now, so most of what we get will be secondhand and found at yardsales (which I think is perfectly fine).
In you guys' opinion, what is the one thing worth splurging on? A good crib, a stroller?

Re: Whats one thing worth splurging on?

  • I'd get a new crib, for sure, but you don't have to spend a lot. All cribs have to meet the same safety standards, so whether you spend $100 or $1000 they will be equally as safe.

If you're planning to babywear I'd splurge on a good carrier.

  • We got our baby carrier on zulily -- so I don't consider that a splurg!

I think our "splurg" is coming on the nursery furniture...hoping it stays with baby for the rest of it's life....or at least a good portion of it!

  • We got almost everything second hand except our car seat. I would always buy new. I second the suggestion of a really good carrier/wrap if you plan to baby wear.

  • I would not buy a car seat at a yard sale. I would buy that new.

  • I would vote carseat or stroller
  • For me it will be the mattress. I am looking into getting one that is made from certified organic wool and covered in organic chemical-free cotton. This will be an investment for me as they are about $500-$600, but considering babies spend most of their time sleeping, I want to ensure that I have no worries about what I'm laying LO on.

A car seat. I would not buy this used (too many what ifs...what if it was in a car accident, for example)

Also dont buy a used crib mattress. You can find some that are inexpensive at Walmart etc, for around $40.

    This!!!
  • Breast pump and car seat
  • Car seat, Ergo, mattress, breast pump (but I choose ameda vs. medela).

  • Sorry cant just pick one car seat, crib & pump. Those are things that if you am splurge on try. If you are comfortable with a used pump go for it. But IMO medela freestyle is best

  • I definitely want to BF so a good pump is probably going at the top of my list now. My dad's giving me my sisters car seat, and I know it's in good condition (don't worry, my sisters only a year old, so it's not a 15 year old car set or anything! :p).

Glider - I've used it more than any other baby item.

    ETA: besides carseat/crib

I'm a FTM, but I'm doing my research to ensure I'm getting a safe car seat (travel system) as its not worth the risk if I get into a car accident. Also, since I will be a working mom, I will invest in a good pump as I will be using it for the next one as well.

  • For breast pumps, be sure to check with your insurance.  I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and some co-workers told me starting in Jan. of this year, BCBS fully pays for an electric double pump but you have to provide proof that the child was born (I'm not sure if this is to get reimbursed or if you have to buy it after, some research I still need to do!).  I'd imagine it varies by plan, but definitely check with your insurance so you don't end up shelling out $300+ when you don't need to!

  • A car seat.  It isn't worth risking baby's safety by buying it 2nd hand.  Mind you there are some great car seats that are reasonably priced.

  • Not buy used = carseat, crib mattress, pump

But the only item above which is splurge-worthy is a pump (if you an on pumping). You can get a good, safe carseat for a reasonable price & a quality mattress.

I feel like an advertisement, but check out the book Baby Bargains. I think it is pretty unbiased on what you need for a baby & gives great reviews & commentary.

Keep in mind that expensive doesn't always equal better or safer.

  • For us, the splurges were the car seat, the Arms' Reach co-sleeper, the Ergo, and my diaper bag. (If I have to carry it around 24/7, it'd better be functional and pretty.)

  • Ooh breast pump, that's a good one! I splurged on furniture and I'll put a good carseat on my registry too.
  • Car seat. Stroller & glider.
  • Car seat, breast pump, and baby carrier (I have heard that Ergo is the way to go, although I have no personal experience with it).

  • If you live in the city and cannot find one second hand I would absolutely splurge on a great stroller

  • Stroller for sure.  Depending on how active you are, we have a BOB stroller for walks/jogs/hikes and it was worth every dollar.

  • We splurged on the nursery furniture. My parents bought good quality nursery furniture when I was born and I had the dresser, mirror, and bookcase well into my 20s. I will also splurge on a good breast pump. As a working mom that would like to bf as much as possible, I think it's important.
