Trying to Get Pregnant

Running while TTC

So I've been running the past few months nothing intense just starting to get into it. I know you're allowed to continue exercising with moderation after you get pregnant but running is kinda high impact do you think it would effect the TTC process or early pregnancy?
Side note: I am relatively health and fit-

  • You can run all you want while TTC and even while pregnant.
  • I'm also a runner.  my doctor said that there were no issues with me continuing to run while TTC.

  • Awesome thank you guys. I've always wanted to be a runner but never enjoyed it or got into it until recently, I was bummed I might have to give it up.

  • Yay for running.  I'm a runner, too.  I've kept going, and plan to when I'm pregnant.
  • I've been wondering this same thing!  I lift weights three days a week, as well as three days of running, and was wondering if I should slow down on either of them.
  • Keep running!

@LawBaby81, no reason to stop lifting right now either. Once you are KU your Dr may recommend that you lighten things up, but for now it should be business as usual in the gym.

When's your half?  I ran my first one 4/28/12 and am happy to say I finished - definitely didn't win any medals :)  I'm thinking of signing up for one that is on 10/26/13 but not sure if I'm ready to get on that training schedule again!

Congrats! It's 9/28/13! I broke my foot in July, so I missed a lot of training, so my goal now instead of under 3 hours is to just finish it lol! There's another one late October that I'm thinking of doing too, depending on how the foot handles this one :)

  • You guys are making me so jealous with your half marathons! I can run, but something about running 13 miles scares the crap out of me. Which makes no sense because I'm doing a Super Spartan in 2 weeks. How do you train yourself to run for that long? Is it mostly a mental thing?

I never thought I could do the 13.1, but for me it was mostly a mental hurdle to cross.  I started telling myself it was just a few hours out of my life and acted like it was no big deal!  You should totally go for it, especially if you are doing Super Spartan!  Those things look crazy!!!

I figured it was a mental thing. I keep saying, ok, 13.1 miles is probably going to mean I'm running for over 2 hours and that's when I freak out. 5Ks and 10Ks, no problem. Half marathon and beyond, my stomach gets knots. I'm a little nervous about the Super Spartan too, but hoping that doing it with friends will make it a little easier. Who knows, maybe I'll realize it's not so bad and go for the half. Thanks for the advice!

At the very least, as you know, when you're in a race, the time seems to fly!  When I did the actual half, there were so many spectators, it really went by quick!  Probably will be the same with the Super Spartan, with all the obstacles :)  Definitely go for it and I'll check in with you when I'm ready to do a Super Spartan!!!

I'd check out a Hal Higdon or other training program. They're online and are great. Find a running club locally so your long runs aren't alone, if you prefer friends when running. I like to run alone but DH likes to run with people. I remember when I did my first 10k, I thought there was no way I could finish. Then I did my first half Ironman. I learned that this mantra is a wonderful thing:

Be not afraid of going slowly; be only afraid of standing still.

You can TOTALLY do 13.1. I promise. :)
    Love this!

  • I plan to keep running as long as I feel good and my body can handle it. I started running in February and still feel like a newbie. I'm doing my 3rd 5k on Sunday and really want to try a 10k but not sure if I should push distance once pregnant. My longest run to date has been just under 6mi.

The only reason running would affect you is if you had anovulatory cycles from it but that is for the extreme runners with no body fat. GL!

    Awesome :)
  • I just wanted to jump in on the running train...I'm so glad to hear about others trying to keep up with it while TTC! We contemplated doing another half this fall but were gone so much of the summer that we just didn't feel like we could keep up with the training. I've done 2 before though and I actually think they're my favorite distance (granted I've never done anything longer and don't plan to!). They're long enough that I feel pretty damn impressed with myself after (as opposed to 5k's after which I'm just glad to be done), but the next day I'm feeling OK and can go about business as usual.

I'd love to hear about how all of your races go! Maybe it'll help motivate me to do some longer ones before winter :) Anyone had experience doing one of those team races (long distance) where each person runs different legs?

Ragnar, @Kara85? Those are the most popular relay races. I have done Ragnar conventionally twice as a 12 person, have done one Ultra 6 person and will be the driver for an Ultra next February. Not running it next year since it conflicts with my Oceanside 70.3 training.

Ragnar is AWESOME. If you do one, I bet you'll get addicted to doing them. They are so fun. 200 miles, 12 people, 2 vans, 24-36 hours. The music, the vans, the decorations, the costumes, the honking (vans and cars honk for other Ragnar runners), the light-up vest decorations people make for night running. Then there are the legs: running at night, under just moonlight in the desert is still one of my top 10 experiences in my life. Seriously, do a Ragnar.

I need to find me one of those! That sounds like so much fun!!!

That sounds crazy!  There is a relay here in Illinois that is 8 runners, 3 legs each, 84 miles total that DH does ever year.  It has  the vans, etc, but only lasts about 12 hours!  I thought that was crazy, but Ragnar sounds intense!
  • There is one in Ohio through the parks, 80 miles, 3 or 6 people, 18 legs... But it doesn't sound nearly as fun as that!

I post over on the Runner's World forum, but it'd be fun to catch up with you all once a week over here.

I did my first and only half marathon on 10-10-10. I used Hal Higdon's training program. I was slow but I did it! I had 3 friends doing it with me and on Saturday's we did our long run together but during the week we did it alone. Every Saturday after our run we treated ourselves to mimosas.

Now I can't run anywhere. Walking some days are problems but I really want to run again. I'm starting off slow with c25k. That program always gets me going. Running is like a drug!

    Fucking bump!!!!
