Cloth Diapering

Mama cloth

Anyone use it? I am actually wondering about whether a panty liner would be absorbent enough for pregnancy leaks when I sneeze or if I need an actual pad. Also if anyone has any brands or Etsy shops they recommend.

Re: Mama cloth

  • I used party in my pants (PIMP). And I would think a liner would be enough for pregnancy... but then again I didn't really leak ever. PIMP have a waterproof backing so it wouldn't leak through to your clothes.

BTW, I used cloth pp and the overnights / supers were more than enough absorbency for me. :) (I did use disposables in the hospital for the first 1.5 days).

Oh yeah, PIMPs have a free sample you can try here

  • I have never preferred pads, so I'm thinking I'll try the Diva Cup after DS is born (and PP of course).  Do you think it's worth the investment for cloth pads if I might never use them again?
  • I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to use cups for PP, for the same reason you don't use tampons for that purpose (risk of infection and *hello* everything down there hurts like a beast for quite some little while).

I wasn't sure if I would like cloth pads either, so I started with 3 just to try. It was obviously not enough to get through my whole cycle, but it helped me figure out that I do like them. I also got a cup, and the pads have been good back-up through the trials and errors of cup-learnage.

  • I started out with just 3 as well to make sure I liked them.  I loved them!  Me switching to cloth pads (and I hated pads) was what convinced me to CD any LOs we had.  I use Lunapads and love them.  I also used them PP and it was much nicer than the disposable ones I had in the hospital.

Chocolatemonkey - you can't use anything that is inserted into your vagina after childbirth (vaginal birth or c-section) for risk of infection.  So you have to use pads.

  • Gotta reinforce that: DO NOT use tampons or a cup for postpartum bleeding. NOTHING in the vagina for 6 weeks after delivery.

I like Tallulah Bean, and I think the liners would be enough for a little bit of leaking.

Oh my goodness. I literally cringed when I read this. You will NOT want to put in a diva cup (or anything else) after you give birth. *shudder with pain*.

This.  I used a cup for a couple years before I had my baby, the last thing I wanted to do was put that in for PP bleeding.  Ow.

I used mama cloth for PP bleeding once I ran out of the mega-pads the hospital provided.  I three or so really huge ones, almost a dozen medium ones and about half a dozen pantyliners.  It wasn't quite enough to go the full two days between cloth diaper laundry, but just about.  I also made them myself, so I can't speak to brands.

For catching leaks - if it's just a little when you sneeze, the liners are going to be fine.  I had some full on serious peeing issues for the first week after I gave birth, so I was thankful to be wearing my big mama cloth - definitely saved some embarrassing clothing changes.

  • I bought one or got a free sample of several brands. I even made a few. I tried PIMP, Talulah Bean, Luna Pads, New Moon Pads, and Domino Pads.
My favorite two that I can't decide between are Talulah Bean and Domino pads. The minky topped ones are delightful! I ended up buy some from both and going to soon get two more liners from Domino Pads. I love the quality and comfort of the Domino Pads!
I use to hate pads before DD was born. Now I have a cup for those times when a pad won't do, like the pool. The cloth pads are super comfortable compared to the disposable ones. I even forgot I was wearing a pad and happily ran after DD without worry, something I would never had done in a disposable.

Both Talulah Bean and Domino pads have PP pads. Don't use a cup for PP. The risk of infection and pain are not what you want then. You want comfort. Use a pad.

Also, I got pattern/color happy when I was selecting my pads and now it can be a little difficult to tell which is what absorbency so I had to mark the snap with a M or H to easily figure out heavy vs medium. I love that mama cloth has pretty patterns and colors!

  • My original post was supposed to say "AFTER PP of course". Sorry about that, now you all think I'm a dummy! I like the idea of starting with a few to try since I've heard a lot of women say they like cloth pads even when they hated disposable ones. Do they work better/longer as well as are more comfortable? What is your wash routine? Especially what did you do PP if you only had 3?

I washed mine with our socks and underwear load before baby. PP I washed with diapers as we were washing daily anyways.

ETA: absorbency is very dependent on the woman. I small pad could last me 6 to 8 hours. But I have a super light flow (talking I still used junior tampons because I didn't need all the absorbency of a regular!) so pp I only had to change it around 4 times a day and rarely they were even close to soaked.

  • I generally will rinse in cold water by hand (if out then I put in a bag and save for home) when I finish with one then toss in my general cloth laundry.  I rinse until the water runs clear.
Cloth pads seem to hold more to me.

I washed mine with my cloth diapers EOD.  I only had 3 really heavy ones - but for the most part, I was able to use my medium absorbency ones, as my PP bleeding wasn't too terrible.

  • I've been using mama cloth for my snizzles. It's been a life saver. I love charlie banana's, but don't get the panty liner length. I also used pink daisy. It's ok. I just wash mine currently with regular laundry.

  • I rinse my pads with cold water and soak them until I do laundry (changing the soaking water every day).  I put them in a mesh laundry bag and throw them in with my regular laundry.  No special soap or special wash routine.  And they have lasted for years.

  • Etsy shop? I love ecoalternatives.etsy.com. Their itty-bitty liners were perfect after the first three weeks or so. And I'm still wearing them three months in... Love them! Don't love that I need to wear them though.
  • Thanks ladies! I ordered a couple liners and a regular pad from an Etsy shop to try out. You definitely have me considering postpartum cloth, especially since I realized that I need to be comparing the price of a stash to weeks worth of disposables, not one pack! Duh! I also realized that I usually use a pad for back up with a tampon, so even if I use a Divacup at work I will probably want to use a pad for back up, so its not like they would just sit in the cupboard until the next time I need them postpartum.
