Parenting after a Loss

Why don't I need a travel system?

DD is still in the NICU but getting closer to coming home. We didn't buy anything for her while I was pregnant and are just beginning to purchase the necessities.

She will still be little when she comes home so we are going to get the Chicco Keyfit30. We also plan on wearing her a lot and will be getting a Moby wrap.

I remember reading some place that we shouldn't get the travel system and just get the Snap-n-Go or the like. So that is what we were planning on doing.

We were also planning on getting a Bob jogging stroller at some point because DH and I like to run.

While looking at car seats DH asked why we weren't getting the travel system and I didn't have a good answer other than 1. I read so on The Bump and 2. It takes up less space and 3. We will be wearing her primarily.

Can someone help me answer DH's question? Thanks!

Re: Why don't I need a travel system?

  • We didn't have one and I'm glad we saved the money on it. Everything I read suggested they were really bulky and impractical. We used a snap-n-go until very recently, when I bought a lightweight stroller - it's a step up from an umbrella stroller, but not a beast. I've also worn DD a lot, so it didn't seem like a good investment.

  • I love my chicco travel system. When we go for walks we use the stroller without the carrier. I love being able to lay her down completely flat so she can get cozy and nap. I also have the snap n go, but haven't used it yet.

We had a snap n go with DS1 and we're really using it now with 2U2. It has been so handy and the basket on my snap n go is amazing. I've even toted two weeks of daycare diapers in it for both boys.

If you haven't gotten your seat yet I would check out the Safety 1st onBoard Air 35....it gets high marks for preemies and it has a special angle for small babies. It's all on carseatblog.com and the Clic it Snap in go is taller and has an excellent parent tray. We love it even after 2 kids. The set has gotten a ton of use from us. The Chicco is good too though. ;)

I later got better lightweight strollers....but the SnG is a must have.

I hope all goes great & she comes home soon.

  • Just read your blog and wanted to offer huge hugs to you and your family, and let you know I'm sending tons of keep growing stronger vibes to your little B!! We bought the travel system and probably only used it a handful of times... We wore DS a lot, too, and thankfully he took well to being worn otherwise we may have needed the stroller more.. And, for what ts worth, just bought the BOB duallie and we love it! It pushes like a dream and seriously is no heavier than my travel system (and again, have the double BOB not the single! I'm sure that one is lighter!!).. Best of luck and I hope your little girl comes home soon!!

    My blog about raising 2U2!
  • Just read your blog, it brought back so many memories of my cousin's 25 week twins. They are now 5 year old kindergartners with no noticeable trace of their rocky start! (The girl is a little small, but healthy as can be!) I'm sure little B will be just as healthy!

As to the travel system, I have one but if weren't gifted to me by someone very close to me, I probably would have gone with something else. The one thing I did like is that I unintentionally got a car seat rated for 4 lbs. Austin was well over 5 when we finally brought him home, but it was nice to know we could have taken him sooner if he were ready. I would go with something that has the recline for preemies, we were just 2 days away from needing a car bed. They are pretty pricey, for something you would use very short term, and that recline feature may help you avoid it.

  • I'm on mobile and can't see your blog link. :( Will have to read tomorrow while I'm at work...
We have the Chicco Keyfit 30 and the SNG and love it! Like PPs said, it's smaller, more easily maneuverable, and lighter weight than the travel system.
For a jogging stroller, we got the Joovy Zoom 360. We used the Chicco car seat adapter at first but now he just sits in the stroller.

  • We have the Chicco Keyfit with the Keyfit Caddy (Chicco's Snap 'n go equivalent ). I love it. All my friends advised against the travel systems saying they were big/heavy/bulky etc.

  • We got a Graco TS and have since sold the stroller (kept the carseat and base).  The stroller is big and bulky.  I used it as long as he was in the bucket seat, but once he could sit in an umbrella stroller I never got it out again.  If we are blessed to have a second kid, I'll get a double stroller that can do a car seat adapter.  I wish we'd just gotten a snap & go.

  • We got one w/DD1. 1) I like that they were so matchy 2) It was a semi-inexpensive route 3) I didn't want a Snap N Go since you can't use it once they are out of infant carseat.

We have Graco and It is okay. It's kinda heavy and bulky. The storage basket sucks and it isn't the best quality. I wish I would have splurged on a really nice stroller with a carseat adapter.

If you are going to get a jogging stroller anyway just get one that you can buy an adapter for your carseat. Do research and spend the $$. It's worth it.

  • Mostly because the snap and go is sooo easy. I literally can get it in and out of my car and set up one handed. We just bought a cheaper snap and go and then splurged on a city mini gt
Because it moves on a dime. It was really apparent when I was pushing my friends travel system yesterday. That stroller didn't turn for anything and was so bulky and annoying. Even though the snap and go isn't an amazing stroller I still felt it was easy to maneuver probably because it's so light. If your getting the bob then I would definitely use the snap and go. I also love pur key fit 30 though at this point I'm starting to shop for convertibles.

  • I got the Chicco Keyfit 30 with the travel system.  Love love love the carseat, don't care for the stroller much.  It is very bulky, and heavy.  I just got the Chicco Liteway umbrella stroller and I LOVE it! It also has a basket underneath.  I saw that they also have a Liteway Plus that will allow you to snap the infant seat in!  I had several people tell me to go with the travel system & wish I hadn't listened. GL!

    AL always welcome!

  • Hi :)

If you're planning on getting a jogging stroller anyway, don't bother w the travel system. I have a Phil and Teds and the difference between that and our Inglesina (which is another nice stroller, don't get me wrong!) is like the difference between pushing a stroller and pushing a shopping cart!

The snap n go is lightweight and I just leave it in the back of my car. Also, many of the jogging strollers have carseat adapters. Save the money for your BOB. You can even get a used snap n go for about $35 on Craigslist.

  • Thanks for the input, everyone! Based on your advice we will be skipping the travel system for now. Really, one of the only reasons we were tempted by it was the color. :)

We've found a decent looking BOB on craigslist and will check it out this week. I think the ad even mentioned a car seat adapter.

@BandEddie, I am happy to be on PAL. I still need to officially intro on here but haven't had much time between nicu visits. Beatrix is 12w1d (36w gestational). She now weighs 3lbs 12.5oz. She is such a big girl compared to where she was at birth (1lb 5oz.) We're hoping to bring her home in the next 2-3 weeks!

Sounds like a good plan! We use the keyfit 30 with the UBV carseat adapter. We mostly wear her when out, but it is nice to have a stroller for long walks and restaurants when she is asleep and I just want to wheel her in without waking her up. And don't worry, I didn't intro here until Anna was like 6 months!
