NWMR - Who here has given up cable tv?

If you have, are you using something to replace it or just not watching as much tv?  What service have you found that offers the most up to date shows?  How much are you spending now compared to what you used to spend?

TV is my guilty pleasure so I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around getting rid of cable but man, it's expensive!

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

We have. We have Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime. Hulu Plus has the most up-to-date stuff, but we've been using Netflix to watch older shows we've missed. The only shows we've had to download are Mad Men and Archer. Just make a list of all your favorite shows and find out how they're available. There are websites like www.canistreamit.com that can help with that.

We gave up cable a while ago.  We have Netflix ($7.99 per month).  Honestly, I don't really miss cable, except for  The Food Network.  But, I can also get a lot of those shows on Hulu.  Besides, my boys usually have control of the TV anyway.  And, there's tons of good stuff on Netflix for kids.

We are planning on giving up cable as soon as our contract is up.  I rarely watch TV these days and the few shows my kids watch they can watch on Netflix.

We're having this discussion right now. I am fine with canceling cable because we have Prime an Apple TV. We would subscribe to Netflix if we did. The only problem is football. We both really like to watch football but follow different teams and with two LO's going to a sports bar is not an option for even one game every week.

We had that fight for awhile. I finally convinced DH to try. He follows ESPN.com now and I don't get upset when he wants to go watch a game somewhere. We have Netflix and amazon prime. Love Netflix and their new shows. love more the approximately $100 a month we've saved

Do people really save all that much on cancelling cable?  We have a triple play- internet, cable, and phone and a multi-room DVR, and its like $140 a month.  I'd cancel the home phone before I cancelled cable.  And we'd still pay for internet.  I really don't think we'd see much cost savings.

We pay maybe $70 for internet, $8 for Netflix (per month). Once in while we'll buy a TV show, but that's probably about $50 a year, total. We don't have cable or landline. So yes, it's quite a bit cheaper!

I really like it bc we have to plan to watch something - it's nice not having the temptation to scroll through channels. But! I don't watch sports, and DH isn't that into them, but will go out if he wants to watch a specific game.

We can't cancel satellite bc of football. DH works a lot of Sundays, so he'll record the game and watch it later.

My sister got rid of cable and now just doesn't watch tv much anymore. I think she does use Hulu.

We had cable and internet.  It was costing $85/month and we decided to cut all of it.  It took about 2 days to realize our phones couldn't stream enough internet to make me happy so we added that back in at $30/mo and never looked back on the cable.  We have Netflix and watch our favorite shows online the day after they air.  We realized we didn't have time to watch tv, there was nothing on anyway and so it was a huge waste of money.

We cut it last year, and amazingly enough, sports is one of the major things we watch. (Although you have to be comfortable with the fact that most of the time it's not HD quality) We're big football fans (both college and pro) and originally thought we'd cut cable during the offseason and sign back up when we missed having cable or couldn't find the game online, whichever came first.

Haven't signed up so far, and I caught every game I wanted for college, and most of our NFL too.

The downside/upside is I have to plan my tv watching, and you can't get sucked into mindless watching. I spend a lot more time actually cleaning and doing projects around the house, so I think that's a net benefit.

I used to watch a  ton of TV (I still love it, but I don't miss it). You'll find something else to do, I promise.

We did for about a year and a half. We had the Computer hooked up so that the tv was the screen and would watch Hulu and Netflix on there. We could even rent movies through youtube. It was a lot cheaper, but its kind of nice to have cable back.

Yes, anyone know how to still keep channels for sports? Football and Hockey are the only reasons we still have cable.

This! We don't watch that much TV so I feel like it's so dumb to spend so much on it. I will never win this battle.

We just run things through a Roku box. Mostly Amazon and Prime, but it also handles Hulu, HBO, etc. The only major sport it runs so far is MLB, however.

Google is in talks with the NFL to take over Sunday Ticket from DirectTV and stream it instead but most people are skeptical it will actually happen.

I also find it hard to give up Cable, I cut my bill in half by switching companies, but I still may have to give it up soon.  Most people I talk to tell me between Netflix and the internet you can basically watch any show that's on Cable.

I'm the sports-watcher in the house, but I don't really follow specific teams, I just like watching football when it's on. So I'll watch that on broadcast TV. I am going to be annoyed about no Monday Night Football, but I didn't think it was worth the $60/month that cutting cable is saving us. (We're saving about around $80 on our bill, but we got Tivo for $15/month because we didn't want to give up the DVR. We actually don't use that very much, we might need to cancel it.)

I think a big problem with getting rid of cable is sports.  From what I've been reading, there just isn't any way to really replace that.  You can get a NBA or NHL package through a streaming service but it does cost a certain amount per season.  We like watching Packer games which I think we could probably still see the majority of since many would be on our local stations but I think we might lose our Brewer's games and pretty sure we'd lose our Marquette basketball.

I watch some Bravo shows and other cable shows, like Dexter and Homeland which would be hard for me to be months behind in watching since so many people at work talk about them, but I think I could live with that.  My bigger thing is just the whole not being able to turn on the tv and just find something that's on.  Last night after the kids were in bed my husband and I caught the second half of Interolable Cruelty.  We love that move and were cracking up at it and the whole time I'm thinking how we'd lose that since nothing would ever really just be on, we'd have to actually say, let's watch Interolable Cruelty tonight.  What would we have done instead of watching it?  I don't know, I probably would have read a book while he worked on school stuff.  I'd love to think I would do big projects around the house but I know me and I doubt that would happen!

Maybe for now I'll ditch the home phone, get a lesser cable package and get rid of the cable box in the basement which we never use and then re-evaluate in another few months.  My thinking is as my kids get older and get more involved in activities I'll have way less time and maybe that is when we'll give up cable for good.

We gave up cable a while ago and were considering coming back to it so I really love this thread. We currently use Netflix and I've started watching Hulu.

I would love it if I could get a device that let me stream Hulu to my TV, and also something that would let me record shows and watch them later. Even with the crap that's on basic cable, I still like my masterchef and SYTYCD, but I don't always get to watch b/c of DS's bedtime.

We stream Netflix and Hulu using our Wii but I know you can also use an xbox or playstation.  There are streaming devices as well for around $99 like Roku and Apple TV that let you stream quite a bit of things like Hulu but also YouTube.

If you want a DVR you could get a Tivo which would let you record shows along with streaming Hulu for you.  There is a monthly fee for it though, I think maybe $10 or $15.

We have the extremely basic cable, no HGTV, Food Network, CNN, PBS Sprout,  more like TBN, TBS, PBS, local channels kind of thing.

I DVR all of DS shows from PBS and I work really hard to find something interesting on the limited channels and DVR those for myself.  It works out great, because, to me, TV can be such a time sucker.

We gave up cable 7 years ago. It was hard at first but now I am so glad. We have an antena that picks up the FREE digital signal in the air, if you have a flat screen digital tv, no converter box is needed. So we still get CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and Public TV for free. I also watch on Hulu and Netflix. I absolutley love it. It has stopped mindless TV watching which was  a big time waister for me.

We cut it a couple years ago and were just renting from the library. But, once we had our son we stayed home in the evenings a lot more (since he is in bed by 7:30) so we got Netflix.

We've never have it.  Just don't watch much TV, I guess.

We watch a lot of Netflix and the major shows that we watch "live" are on standard channels - The Voice, Shark Tank, Wipe Out, Downton Abbey.  We just know that when we watch TV shows on Netflix that we're going to be a season or two behind, but that's okay -- none of our friends spoil things for us.

We gave up cable over 4 years ago and I love it!  At the time, it was to save money, but I wouldn't choose to bring it back now regardless of the bill. We have basic, so we get the PBS channels and the major networks. Right now, the only replacement for it is basic $7.99/month netflix streaming. Honestly, we used to waste so much time watching crap on tv. Movies we had seen 4 times, shows neither of us would choose to watch but would still sit and zone out to. The only hesitation DH had initially was no red sox, but he likes it now. He says there's no need for him to sit and watch 3 hours of tv straight, and he can listen on the radio if he wants. We're moving and considering doing no basic cable and finding a way to hook up our computer to the tv for when we do netflix and just doing that. But our tv is also at least 15 years old, so we don't know if can't work. The age of our tv clearly shows how low on the priority list tv is for us though.

We canceled cable years ago before kids because we were too busy to watch it much, and it always felt like such a waste of time. We don't really watch anything now. We have DVDs for the kids that they watch on the weekends sometimes, and DH and I will get a movie from Redbox sometimes. I skim the entertainment news on Internet news sites and in Time magazine so I have some idea what the shows are that people are talking about.

I'm surprised so many of you still have home phones. Why?

I'm surprised so many of you still have home phones. Why?

We have a landline for a few reasons. First, I like having a "family" number that we use on school and doctor forms. It's also the number I give out when I don't want to share my cell phone number. Also, while cell service is pretty good in our house, our landline gets better reception and is more reliable. Oh, and finally, we've moved so many times that having a landline allows us to have a local area code without having to change our cell numbers.

Is it a luxury? Yes, sort of like cable. I honestly don't think I'd miss cable at all if we got rid of it. But we like having it for "convenience" (for lack of a better term), i.e. for the times we want to watch something. The extra $70 bucks a month or whatever we'd save is such a tiny fraction of our monthly bills/savings we'd hardly notice it.

We gave up cable in '10 due to the costs. We use Hulu+ ($8/month) and we also have Amazon Prime (Instant Prime), which we watch through our Wii or on our laptops. I'm actually really happy without cable, we do have periods where we watch too much (when we decide for example, to watch SVU from the beginning-current), but we watch everything on our own schedule, there's no living life by the box. It's also nice because when my mom/stepdad visit they can't just turn on our tv to watch crap at top volume (my stepdad likes to have the news blaring 24/7).

We only have cable during football season. I crunched the numbers and discovered that even with installation fees, it still saved us money to have it just 6 months each year.

When we don't have it, we go back and forth between Netflix and Blockbuster. We watch all of our TV series on Netflix. Then when we don't have anything else to watch, we switch to Blockbuster and watch all the new releases and the HBO/Showtimes TV series.

And we have HD rabbit ears for the network channels that work quite well.

We just gave up DirecTV in the last month. We picked up a couple of antennas for local stations, and stream Netflix through various devices at each TV (Roku, Playstation, XBox). Just about every night DH and I remark that we don't miss DirecTV at all. I certainly don't miss paying $83/mo for it. DH has checked and most of the football games he'd want to watch will be broadcast on one of the local stations, but if there's something he does want to watch he might just go to his mom's.

We gave it up 3 yrs ago right before DD1 was born. Too expensive and we didn't watch often enough to justify the cost. Best decision we ever made. We have an antenna so we still get network channels, and Netflix too-- between the two there's more than enough to watch when we feel like it. Added benefit: my daughter only has access to PBS Kids, so her viewing is kept to a minimum. We find ourselves doing so many more valuable things with our time. Honestly it was the best thing for us and I've never regretted it.

We actually don't have a physical TV. We watch Hulu and have Amazon Prime and with that, we already feel like we watch too much. When we're in a hotel or visiting a friend with a TV, we talk a lot less and our child is like a zombie. I know not every family has that reaction but we just feel like our quality of life is better when watching a show is something that we intentionally plan to do, have to set up, and only get to after our other stuff is taken care of. Having a TV accessible enough to turn on and leave on as background noise is just a direct route to zombie land for us.

We have an HD antena so we still get the basic channels and then we pay for netflix. Since our son is so young right now, we really don't watch much tv except while he's napping or for the news especially during the summer where there is nothing good to watch anyway. Netflix is just $8 a month for us and I think hulu is about that much too which does have some tv shows. It saves a ton of money. There are still some shows I miss, but frankly we are too busy to notice.
