UO or judgments?

Let 'em rip.

Mine: I just can't get that worked up about chemicals in J&J baby soap or non-organic foods. In the grand scheme of things, I can't imagine the few drops of soap are going to give my baby cancer. As long as I'm not raising them on a diet of McD's and a sedentary lifestyle, I feel like they will turn out ok. Great for those who want to do organic everything, but unless you live in a commune, you will be exposed to chemicals in the air, water, and genetically engineered seeds and animals (even if raised organically).

I will have to second this!

  • Judgement for the day.

Our girls get their helmets tomorrow and I'm already dreading slash trying to think of how I'm going to respond to people when they ask "what's wrong with them"

I mean, I COULD always just "cut them" ;D haha
Disclaimer: I would never actually cut someone. Only mentally!

    LOL

You need to come up with a really witty come back for the stupid people. Or just put a sticker that says, "Ask me about my helmet and get kicked in the face."

Or a "you should see the other guy" kind of comeback?

I don't think it is hypocrisy to try to weed out the chemicals you have a choice to avoid. I just am of the unpopular opinion that it isn't that big if a risk. I think that is an actual UO for the bump though. :)

And who us giving you crap about being a working mom? Are they offering to pay your mortgage? If not, they should probably shove it. I also think my kids are getting a lot out of daycare in terms of social skills learning and education. Unlike my DCP, I have no training in early childhood ed, so I appreciate her expertise.

You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. If someone says something rude I would reply " if you don't shut up you're going to be asked why you have a nose cast on because imma bout to break it for you!" Jk but I'd totally think it!

My judgement is how stupid people are that think there is anything "wrong" with them in the first place.
I was thisclose to losing my babies, them having to wear a helmet is the LEAST of my worries!

I was worried about this too when my ds1 had his helmet. We put a superman sticker on it and people mostly just smiled and thought he was cute. If anyone is dumb enough to say "what's wrong with them?" You can say "nothing, they're perfect, but they need a little help making their heads round ;)". Smile and walk away. Now when I see people whose kids have a helmet, I just go up to them and say that my ds had one and he's doing great now.

I agree with some of this.

I did switch LO from J&J soap,  but I can see where you're coming from as well in that we're always exposed to chemicals... I think it's a personal decision; for me it was "if I know about this one I am going to try and avoid it...."

I personally (and maybe this is a UO in itself) think people who do all organic take eating heatlhy way too far.... I will try and give LO some organic stuff, but I will NEVER give her an all organic diet. My SIL does this, at first I thought it was great, now I think she's taken it way too far. Her kids eat all organic, she only lets them have nitrate free hot dogs and cold cuts, and doesn't let them have juice..... Just milk and water.

Ya know what? they are kids - there needs to be a better balance. Everything in moderation.

The ridiculous part is that through my job we get a free apartment and all utilities (including phone and internet). WHY THE HELL WOULDN'T I KEEP WORKING!? For real, people.

Its random friends and family. They just halfheartedly ask, "Well...wouldn't you rather just stay home??"

And I totally agree with your last sentence. Charlie learns all kinds of things that I wouldn't think or know to sit down and teach him.

I think most people asking about the helmets mean well and are just curious. Maybe asking "what's wrong with them?" is not the right approach but I don't think it deserves a witty comeback. I never knew about the helmets till I had a baby either and started reading up on flat spots and torticollis.

Maybe that's my second UO for the day :)

  • This isn't an UO, necessarily, but perhaps a judgement? Complaint?

Either way - I can't believe the crap I get for being a working Mom. I'm the bread winner for our family and absolutely love my job. Just because I love my job, doesn't mean I love my family any less. I truly believe Charlie gets a lot out of daycare (and Ginny will once she's a bit more active) and that we'd all be bored out of our damn minds at home all the time.

I agree... and I can't believe you get crap from people for being a working mom! First off, like it's any of their business, but second, how do they expect you to pay for... I don't know... LIFE if you're not working, but supporting 2 kids?

And although I feel guilty for leaving Emma every morning, I know that I'm doing it for her own good. It's good for them to spend time out of the house, with other people, with other kids... it expands their vocabulary, communication and socialization skills and gets them used to being around other people other than you and DH. Andplusalso, I would go absolutely crazy being a stay at home mom. Some people can handle it, I just can't. Not only that, I'm not the bread winner, but I am the one with the benefits. So... yeah.

If I could take Emma to work with me, all would be well with the world. :)

I feel the same way. I have a job that involves working with the public and they all know I had a baby. I get judged all.the.freaking.time by customers and even family members. My SIL who just found out she was pregnant YESTERDAY already called and quit her job because it's selfish not too. Ummm.... Cool? I work because my DH and I want to have a good life for us and our children without mountains full of debt. I would make a terrible SAHM! I was stir crazy on my 12 week maternity leave let alone being home everyday. I work because life is expensive and selfishly (if you will call it that) for myself too. Momma needs a break every once in a while too :)

  • This should probably be my FFFC, but it fits with this discussion: I don't work and DD goes to daycare at least once a week. Not because I need a break, but for things mentioned by PPs such as socialization. I think it's important for her to learn to interact with people even at this young of an age. Plus she sleeps so well after!

Don't feel bad. DH was a SAHD all summer because he's a teacher and Charlie went to daycare twice a week. One day was "water day" and one day was "bike day." He had a BLAST!

Not UO to me!  Every baby wash that has been recommended to me over J&J has something bad in it, its picking the lesser of the evils really.

MyUO is I HATE formula checks.  Why can't they just make the formula cheaper and call it a day instead of producing these checks. I feel awful when i purchase formula without a check!

I would love to know how cheap formula is to manufacture. Store brand is so much cheaper, so its obviously not as expensive as they lead you to believe. Store brands have the exact same ingredients as name brands, but the name brands guilt you into buying theirs as if its better in some way.

Nope, no difference. And actually, almost all store brand formulas are made by the same company (Perrigo Nutritionals). There was a lawsuit a few years ago where Enfamil tried to claim via their advertisements that their formula was superior to store brand and Perrigo sued them.

  • My UO is that this board could use a little more crunchiness :) Yep, we cloth diaper and wipe, baby wear, and pay close attention to what goes on our baby's skin. We aren't perfect but I believe it's better to try than just say "Oh, everything is bad these days" and not look into what you use on yourself and your baby.
Just because I use a mainstream product over an organic/natural one doesn't mean I didn't look into what I use. Yes, I use disposable diapers and formula fed but my kid has food, shelter, nurturing caregivers and a college fund.  I don't think not being cloth diapered is going to have an impact on the person he becomes...so maybe another UO?

I don't think she's implying that how a baby is diapered or fed is going to change who they are, but sometimes the general air around here feels like, "Why are you even trying? You'll get cancer anyway..." or "Reading labels is a waste of time/overkill."
my bad then..i don't think like that, im more benefits vs risks type so i guess there are different ways to get to an outcome.

  • My UO is that people should do more research into why they think a product is bad and be able to really back it up, and not just say I read/heard that such and such is bad for you. Really for me this is a bit about rice cereal and the johnson and johnson stuff. Yes rice cereal has been found to have arsenic, but really if the levels were that bad it would have been pulled from the shelves. Some food products have naturally occurring arsenic. Yes Johnson and Johnson has bad chemicals, but after a huge backlash for the company they are working on doing something about it. Really spend the time researching and do what's best for you and your family.
  • @JordanLeighx3 I think the helmets on the babies are so damn cute. As far as the "working mom" thing goes... Some people are better parents when they aren't with they're children all day. I don't get how people don't get that.
"As soon as I saw you I knew an adventure was going to happen." ~Winnie the Pooh
  • My UO is I do not think the Government is trying to kill us. Sure, we are in a shitty situation economically and we do have some questionable things like Patriot Act and similar which I see is intruding on our Amendments, but I do not think they are doing chem-trails, I do not think they are purposely poisoning us so we have to use pharmaceutical products and stuff like that.

I am not a fan of GMO foods, but I would still eat some. I am actually all for genetically engineering rice to have the rotovirus vaccine in it for 3rd world countries. But I would not be a fan if that was the only rice available for them. Let them have a choice too.
