Here is mine.... I think lack of religion is contributing to the downfall of this country. I know I'm probably in the minority on this board with this. But honestly I think politicians need God more than most... They have little morals and make decisions for people who they in no way can identify with (ie prolife/pro choice, tell me how many men in DC have had to carry a child). In my UO I believe separation of church and state was never meant to e used as it is now. It was meant to allow everyone their respective beliefs without persecution. I don't believe they put it in place to make sure God had no place in this country.
Also mommy and daddy are TERRIBLE I cringe every time I hear it. We are mama and dad or dada. I really want to puke when I hear anyone over the age of 3 say mommy and daddy.
In my opinion, the religion driven politicians are the ones making these decisions.
Also, you don't need religion to be a morally good person. One of my favorite quotes is from Abraham Lincoln and he said, "when I do bad, I feel bad. When I do good, I feel good. That's my religion." I've known many religious to people that I don't consider "good, moral" people just as I've known many non religious people to be the ones who donate their time and money to people in need and treat people the kindest. That is not a blanket statement for or against religion, that is me stating that I don't believe religion is what does or doesn't make you a good person. I fully believe that you can raise sound, moral children without religion, and I fully believe that religion has no place in government.

Jean Paul Sartre and Ayn Rand have shown us how to be moral without God, and there are many spiritualist writers that have shown us how to be moral without religion. That's all I'm throwing in this time around...

I'm not saying if you aren't religious you can't or don't have morals. Politicians have little to no morals regardless of religion... I know it's an UO I jut wanted to clarify that I don't think everyone necessarily needs religion to be a good/moral person

Oh, I didn't think that's what you were saying. My response to you was that I think the politicians to claim to be religious are the ones making those decisions for people whom they cannot relate to. The rest of my comment was a response in general to the notion that this country is lacking religion. I just disagree with that statement. In fact, most wars are sparked by religion. Everyone has their own beliefs and people kill people in defense of them. I don't agree that a country should be ran on religion basis.
I also think Team Green is totally AW-y. Like we're all supposed to be on the edge of our seat waiting with baited breath to hear what your baby is. I also side-eye anyone who says they did it to make the experience "more special." It's the birth of your child. You can't make it "more special."
I can see Team Green...what I don't get...finding out the sex and NOT telling people. It's self centered to me.
We'll find out & won't tell. It shouldn't matter to others. At a time when so many people feel the need to stick their noses into our business, it's one little thing we can hang onto and just enjoy knowing together.
I guess another UO of mine is that I don't see anything wrong with these debates. Obviously in a UO thread you will see if because no one is (intentionally) posting popular opinions. I think debating is healthy and always a learning experience. Just because I might not change my opinion (particularly on subjects like abortion) doesn't mean I don't enjoy a debate about it and maybe can understand pro-lifers opinions more. I'll never agree with a straight pro-lifer but that doesn't mean I can't respect some of their opinions. We're all adults here, I don't see anyone belittling someone. I don't know why other moms post that we are being mean or fighting, etc. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone is entitled to share it. Until I start seeing people call me names I have no problem with them telling me they disagree with me for x, y, and z reasons.
Oh I definitely don't think there's anything wrong with them - I love a good debate! Which is part of why in always willing to start this thread every week if no one else has already done so. I just think abortion in general tends to make folks see red...and then we get A LOT of posts that start to read more like "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" rather than "this is what I believe because of X, Y, and Z."

I think that's what we're doing too. It's not because I'm self centered and think the world cares whether I'm having a boy or girl. It's because I really want to go team green but my DH really wants to find out and if he's finding out then I want it to at least be our secret. I feel the same way about people who don't reveal their names.
Soy is awful for you. If you drink milk raw (goats or cow, we have both) the health benefits are incredible and even lactose intolerant people don't react terribly.
Actually new studies have been done that show soy can help prevent breast cancer and is better for you than almond milk. Its just that so many things are supposed to be good for you and then become awful for you and then years later become better again. I'm tired of following the yo-yo.
@clickactual our founding fathers were deists so I think they definitely wanted separation of church and state. I'm pretty sure Thomas Jefferson would be very surprised/angry about all the God talk in government.

Interesting!! The last I read was that soy is terrible for women. I was reading that more in the context of soy protein, though. I try to stick to almond and coconut milk here. My DS won't drink the stuff though so I do give him organic cows milk. My DH doesn't really drink milk at all.
I judge people who constantly promote eating organic. I know that for some people it's a necessity due to allergies and I have no problem with people who eat organic and keep it to themselves, or just occasionally mention it. But people who constantly tell me how bad regular food is for me and how I should only eat organic food just make me want to eat a huge McDonald's burger right in front of them :P
Also, very pro-life, moderately pro-spanking, team Finding Out (although I could care less if people choose Team Green), and I absolutely love cow milk

I'm sorry but I think religion is what is wrong with our country today. It seems that religion has become the crux of everyone's argument. Every argument comes back to this book that is no longer relevant to common life, rules that are no longer relevant to every day society, and are picked over and twisted to make someone's point feel valid.
Personally, if you use religion as an argument I stop listening. Come up with some real reasons YOU came up with for why you think something is wrong. Think for yourself and stop letting a book or others think for you. I've had the bible thrown up in my face about abortion, gay marriage, racism, and why its ok to shun others who don't agree with you. God is not the reason you succeed, you're the reason you succeed. God is not the reason I child dies from cancer.God is not the reason there was a bombing, angry intolerant people are.
I'm just tired of it, and this is coming from a person that believes in God but has no belief in the nasty hatred that most churches propagate as religion.

Whose God are you talking about? How would government and religion coincide under your particular definition of the First Amendment?

There is always a new study out somewhere. I don't really know what to believe. I drink almond, soy and real cow's milk right now...
^^^^ and, just have to point out, Thomas Jefferson made it abundantly clear that the first clause of the 1st Amendment was intended to "build a wall" between government and God.

Yup. And nothing angers me more than hearing someone argue, "because the scripture says to" to me. The scripture says a lot of stuff that you are willfully fine with ignoring when it's convenient to you. Not to mention how many times the bible has been passed down and translated. How can you even be sure you're reading the original word?
("you" being the population of people I'm referring to who quote the scripture in their arguments)
I was raised catholic and in catholic schools and frankly I just got tired of the hypocrisy.
As someone who does not believe in the Christian God I would take it as a great injustice if my country began (or continued to in some cases) make laws based on something that doesn't apply to me and many other Americans.
I don't believe religion is what's wrong with America- I believe extremists are what's wrong. The people that try to push their views on everyone else and cause serious pain and strife in our country.
A very PI joke: Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one. It's fine to be proud of it. But please do not whip it out in public and start waving it around. And PLEASE don't try to shove it down my children's throats.
Like I said PI, but my dark sense of humor found it funny and accurate.

The problem, as I see it, is the politicians who make the decisions about what laws to adopt. Most of those who are trying to make laws against abortion refuse to embrace any kind of sex education, sexual health clinics, birth control options, or anything else that doesn't match up with their political (and/or religious) agenda.
This is what's wrong with Texas right now. In an otherwise perfect state, these issues are fucked up.
If anything, I've become even more pro-choice since I got pregnant. The idea that a woman could be forced to carry a child she didn't want is revolting to me.
@maelic This is EXACTLY how I felt when I was pregnant with my son.

I don't really mind that though. If I get too heated I just step away from the computer/iPhone.

I also judge people who eat organic - just a little bit. Almost all fruits/veggies have some level of pesticides regardless of it they're grown on an organic or non-organic farm. If The farmer next to the organic one is spraying pesticides left and right, you better believe that the "organic" farm is going to be covered in them. Between that and run off- I just think people are overpaying for a brand. There's no way the food at Whole Foods looks that good/fresh without pesticides and traveling that far.

Yep Good old boy Rick has used his religion to strip women of their basic rights. Yay God.

@maelic This is EXACTLY how I felt when I was pregnant with my son.
I also agree with that statement. I've actually used that in a debate with someone who had never been pregnant or given birth before. Not that I think anyone's opinion is less warranted than others, but I respect an opinion a little bit more if the person has at least been through pregnancy and delivery. It isn't easy even when it's something you very much wished for. I couldn't fathom forcing someone who didn't want it (particularly in rape situations) to go through it.
Soy is awful for you. If you drink milk raw (goats or cow, we have both) the health benefits are incredible and even lactose intolerant people don't react terribly.
Soy is not awful for you. Care to back that up? I would agree that too much soy, like too much anything, is not good.
I hate when people say they're lactose intolerant. It's not meant for you in the first place. It's like saying I'm motor oil intolerant. Should I really be drinking it? Mmm, no.

I was really disliking this BMB as of late. I'm glad the UO thread happened today. I'm happy to see that I do, in fact, relate to a few members of this group.
I love asking people who drink cows' milk if they'd ever drink human breast milk and watch them get grossed out and lose their minds. It makes absolutely no sense to me that women who have carried and delivered babies, and have been through breast feeding, can not see the parallels. Non-human milk isn't meant for humans. Cows' milk is for baby cows. Period.
This is so true. Im not drinking or eating dairy for that matter throughout my whole pregnancy, nor will i ever give my child cows milk. It is SO bad for humans its not even funny. The dairy industry is sleeping with the government and they have brainwashed north americans to think it is actually healthy.
I think whether its The Zone, Atkins, Gluten-free, organic-only or juicing or whatever other program, if you are watching every morsel that goes into your mouth, even if it IS wonderful nutritious food, you have a disordered pattern of eating.
Relax. Eat some french fries or cheese when you're at a restaurant. It's great to eat mostly clean or whatever, it if you can't let it go here and there, that's messed up.

@flom0036 Gluten free is a poor choice to include amongst these other diets. There are many people, like myself, who are severely intolerant. The majority of people I know who eat gluten free do so for this reason and not because it's some celebrity fad. A small amount would make me very ill. I have no choice but to watch every morsel that goes into my body unless I'd prefer to be sick the rest of my life.
Yes I know that @poppylove14. My brother is also a celiac and that is part of why it drives me nuts when people do it as a "diet" or "lifestyle choice."
I consider myself lucky to be able to use a toaster without worrying that the previous contents weren't gluten-free. So I think it's messed up for people who DO NOT need to worry about it to do so because its the latest fad diet.

I mostly agree with PP, but I do agree with your statement. I have a cousin who has her own cabinet of food and her own cabinet of cooking pots and pans and utensils because even cross contamination with gluten will make her severely ill.
People still spank their children? Did I just go into some sort of time warp?
Sure do.
I said I would never spank my kids, and I even judged DH when I saw him spank them. That was when I was working a ton and wasn't at home with them. Now that I am a SAHM, I admit I have spanked them a time or two.
I'm a SAHM mom too. It would honestly never even cross my mind to raise my hand to my son. Ever!
In terms of soy, its is bad for you when is non organic. Lol i know u guys were just talking about the whole organic issue... But the idea is that regular soy has hormones and has been so processed it could cause hormonal issues for both women and men (like regular cows milk does).
Im not SO hard core, i do occasionally have goats milk cheese or goats feta. It is easier for our systems to process.
I also disagree with ppl giving their kids sugar before the age of 2 or 3. It is SO unnecesary. My SIL used to give her daughter brown sugar in her milk bottle as a baby. Claimed it was all natural anyways. SMH.

I agree. I have been a SAHM for 7 years and don't hit my kids. WTH does SH having to do with anything?

I used to think I was against giving toddlers sugar too. That was before I had one. I'm not saying I would put sugar in a baby's milk (that sounds a little cray cray), but once you hit the first birthday party and all the other kids are taking bites of cupcakes, I wasn't about to whip a carob-flax muffin out of my purse. Now I say, all things in moderation. We got to age 1 without sugar.

You do know it's legal to abort a child up to 24 weeks in most states, right? Have you ever had a 20 week a/s?
What's your point? It may look like a baby at 20 weeks but it can't live on the outside on its own.

I'm just tired of it, and this is coming from a person that believes in God but has no belief in the nasty hatred that most churches propagate as religion.
Yup. And nothing angers me more than hearing someone argue, "because the scripture says to" to me. The scripture says a lot of stuff that you are willfully fine with ignoring when it's convenient to you. Not to mention how many times the bible has been passed down and translated. How can you even be sure you're reading the original word?("you" being the population of people I'm referring to who quote the scripture in their arguments)
I was raised catholic and in catholic schools and frankly I just got tired of the hypocrisy.
I don't believe religion is what's wrong with America- I believe extremists are what's wrong. The people that try to push their views on everyone else and cause serious pain and strife in our country.
A very PI joke:
Religion is like a penis.
It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please do not whip it out in public and start waving it around.
And PLEASE don't try to shove it down my children's throats.
Like I said PI, but my dark sense of humor found it funny and accurate.
I don't really mind that though. If I get too heated I just step away from the computer/iPhone.
I hate when people say they're lactose intolerant. It's not meant for you in the first place. It's like saying I'm motor oil intolerant. Should I really be drinking it? Mmm, no.
Motor oil intolerant. I giggled.
