Caffeine

How much caffeine are you allowing yourself? I know they say now that some caffeine is OK but I trying to figure out how much I'm OK with.

I didn't have a a single drop of it from week 4 to week 16 because I was so sick and didn't even want any. But now that my morning sickness has finally calmed down my cravings are back hardcore. When I finally could drink soda again I let myself have one canned Dr. Pepper with dinner everyday because I was just so glad I could drink something. Usually two glass if we were out to eat. Now I'm thinking I want to limit that more.  And coffee finally smells good again, great even, so I'm wanting to add a little of it back in also.

We all know decaf coffee still has some caffeine in it but after researching I found that Folders decaf coffee singles (prepared like a tea bag) have the least amount that I can find. It doesn't taste amazing but once I add cream and sugar its good enough.

Here's an awesome chart showing the amount of caffeine in name brand coffees, teas, sodas, even some ice cream if anyone is interested in seeing where their guilty pleasures rank in. https://www.cspinet.org/new/cafchart.htm

I'm thinking I'm going to see if I like caffeine free coke, and if I don't like that then I'll probably go with decaf iced tea rather than my daily Dr. Pepper.  I have water all through out the rest of the day. What do you drink with dinner?

  • I typically drink one pretty small cup of coffee in the morning, and then at lunchtime I will have an iced tea or a coke.  After that it's water or milk.

  • I drink a 10 oz cup of half-caff coffee most days. The days I don't have half-caff, I drink full strength. And a few time a week I will also have caffeinated diet soda or iced tea in addition to my coffee.

  • I make myself a 10oz mug of half decaf half regular coffee most mornings. I rarely finish it - I've discovered it's largely the ritual that I missed. Three months ago I never would have thought I could make it through the summer without my afternoon iced coffee! I'm not a soda drinker, so that little bit of coffee is really it.

  • I drink a medium iced coffee every single morning (it's 24oz, and has 91mg of caffeine in it)

All I drink for the rest of the day is water, and maybe water with crystal light in it.

Without my coffee, I would die...ok maybe not die, but I'd be one miserable bitch.

  • I allow myself 1 caffeinated beverage a day, if that's a can of pop or a coffee. I haven't finished a soda in about 6 months anyway, but if I open one, that's it.

I usually made my coffee really strong, but I have found that the Folger's Decaff singles that @Cara1024 mentioned are OK when made weaker.

I had zero caffeine from weeks 7(when we found out) to 14.

I drink water all day. Maybe a few sips of Gatorade but it makes me feel more thirsty. I do occasionally have a cup of hot tea. But lately I've been spilling it before I get to drink it . Last week i spilled three different cups all in 10 minutes . I suck at life

First trimester I was grossed out of coffee, now I do one tall Starbucks cappuccino in the morning and another Starbucks drink in the afternoon. The caffeine is below the daily limit (I have seen ranges but I try to go no more than 150 mg of caffeine, though I have seen 200 elsewhere). This has been only about the last two weeks since I've been back from vacation. I would love to decrease it, at least do decaf or half caf in the afternoon. Yesterday I skipped the afternoon one. We will see how it goes... I feel pretty guilty about it even though it's within the limit but I am so tired at work. I only hope I don't want even more caffeine in the third trimester.

  • Honestly, right now one coffee a day is the only thing that keeps my headaches away.  Yesterday I went without and had a splitting headache by the end of the day.  One that Tylenol helped with but didn't stop.  And prior to being pregnant I drank maybe 1 or 2 cups of coffee a week, so it's not like it's a coffee withdrawl headache (and I also had headaches during 2nd tri with my girls and I didn't drink coffee then) and so I'm drinking more caffeine now then I was before.  But still within the recommended amounts.

With dinner I drink water or milk but that's all I've ever drank during dinner for my entire life, so there is no change there.

  • I will have a can of coke for the day. OR if I treat myself to McDonalds breakfast... I know its bad but sometimes its so good. I will have a Medium Coke from there. But that is all I will have for the whole day.
  • I try and stay under 200 mg. I allow myself a Dr. Pepper at lunch then its water or OJ or grape soda. If we go out I'll have 2-3 glasses of coke.

luckily all I want is water, but I will occasionally treat myself to an iced coffee if I'm out...(have probably had about 10 all summer).
in 1st trimester I was so nauseous that I would drink 1 can of ginger ale a day. But now, I only want iced water. hold the lemon.

For a treat with dessert, I love Coconut Almond Milk.

Edit: just read that link you provided and apparently ginger ale does not have any caffeine content?! score!

Haha!  But seriously, this is so true.  The most recent outbreaks of Listeriosis have been bagged salads and cantaloupe's, but obviously doctor's aren't going to tell you not to eat those things.  But since lunchmeat isn't really nutritious anyway, it's easy to tell pregnant women not to eat that.

  • Yeah under 200 mg is the recommendation, a can of soda has 30 mg of caffeine in it. I worked night shift when I was pregnant with DD and used to do an iced mocha latte every evening on my way in and then tried to do just water or non-caffeinated beverages the rest of the time. I try not to go crazy with it but with a 10 month old, mama needs caffeine sometimes!

  • I drink about 10 oz of coffee a day. I usually have either a 12 or 20 oz diet coke in the afternoon. I've been doing this my entire pregnancy.

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker imageBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I have a small glass of chocolate milk every morning. I didn't drink soda or coffee before pregnancy, so I don't drink it now. I do end the day with something sweet, either ice cream, or a brownie, or pudding, etc.

  • I don't regulate it other than I do get decaf coffe instead of regular if and when I get coffee (a few times a week).  I also drink iced tea.  Some days I won't have either, and some days I'll have both, including several iced tea refills.  I figure even if I'm over the "allotted" amount for a single day, it more than averages out for the rest of the week and in general I'm under.  I also average about 1-2 half glasses of wine a week and one deli sandwich.  I'm living on the edge!

  • I have one can of diet pop every day.  I read somewhere when I first found out I was preggers that some caffeine is ok, but not to exceed the amount contained in 4-6 cans of soda.  And since I usually only had one a day (and don't drink coffee), I haven't changed anything.  I do try to buy the white diet pops that are caffeine free, but I really enjoy my diet dr pepper.

  • Great chart!  I have one cup of coffee at work each morning, nothing on weekend mornings.  I sometimes treat myself to a grande half-caff skinny vanilla latte on the weekends.  I love the half-caff since it has the same flavor and gives a little boost.  I do not drink soda, rarely did before and never crave it.  I like tea but feel like so many are on the "do not drink" list that I don't bother.  I've been having dessert every night so the chocolate does add up.

I'll drink a cup of coffee 1-2 times a week.  And I have an orange Fanta once in a blue moon, too (I'd guess maybe 3 this whole pregnancy).  I was a daily coffee drinker before, so I'm pretty impressed with myself for giving it up for the most part.  I drink it usually on Sunday morning and/or a day in the week if I'm super tired.

I did switch to half-caff coffee (the green mountain K-cup) in the morning and I don't drink a ton of soda, but I will drink sweet tea if I'm out at a restaurant an I don't really worry about the number of times it gets refilled.

  • I don't drink very many caffeinated beverages in general. Just the occasional hot chocolate or tea. I get really jittery when I have more than that so I avoid caffeine in general. Plus, I don't like coffee. I'm a weirdo that way. Pretty much the only way I've cut my caffeine intake for pregnancy is to eliminate green tea.

Roughly but it does vary on what soda we are talking about. And who knew diet coke has a good bit more caffeine than regular coke. I hate diet soda but this just adds another reason why.
