When to apply for a new job?

I'm literally on my first week back to work from maternity leave and I'm back to a big ol' mess. Our SVP had a breakdown and is MIA, all the projects going on now are pretty boring and there is the constant threat of them eliminating our team and "drafting" us out. It's like a sports draft where other teams get to choose who they want. In stead of worrying about getting drafted by a team I don't want to be on I looked and another section of the company has a job Id love. I'm qualified, it's a title promotion and pay increase. My thing is I just got back to work and I'd hate to leave the regular VPs down another person. We're a super tight group and I love working with them. Plus I get to work from home 90% of the time and the other job I'd be 100% in the office. What would you all do? Little background I work in application development and testing for an international financial institution.

Re: When to apply for a new job?

  • If it's a job you would love, pay increase and title increase I would at least interview.  If you are offered the job and accept you will still be available in the company to answer any questions during the transition period of training a new employee.  The downside would be working in the office. I find when I'm WFH, I eat all.day. It's a good thing I'm in an office. There can be perks.

  • Yeah I definitely like being home with my LO but I hate the lack of adult interactions. I never get out of sweats and I never seem to get out of the house to run errands. I got so much more accomplished working in the office. Only downside to applying is that I have to get prior approval to apply for an inter company position. If I don't it looks terrible.
  • Have a frank discussion with one of the VPs.  Express your interest in the position as well as your concern about leaving the team at this time.  I think it's worth it to have a talk, and if things are as bad as they sound, a decent VP will support your departure.
