I think plastic grocery sacks shouldn't be made anymore. I literally think they should be illegal. Why can't we use paper sacks or totes only?

When I see someone with 45,000 grocery bags, I'm like, "You couldn't have bothered to bring just ONE reusable tote?"

Also, I'd love to recycle, but I'd have to pay almost $10 more a month in order to have the city come get it, and I think that is stupid. No wonder no one does it here.

You have to pay to recycle? How fucked up is that?

Regarding the plastic bags - I've heard that the rule is that you will save 0,05$ if you bring a reusable bag in the US?

Here, you have to PAY 0,05$ per plastic bag you use. I think this is more effective.

I guess this all kind of confuses me because we pay quarterly for trash/recycling pick up.

I feel bad when I get a lot of plastic grocery bags but I have two dogs and they have poop that needs to be picked up. I need those bags.

Ditto Emily. We used tote bags at the grocery store until we adopted two Black Labs and then we needed every poop bag we could find.

  • I find it funny that most people can understand why you can't just tell an anorexic or bulimic person to eat a sandwich but they CANNOT for the LIFE OF THEM understand why overweight people just can't lose weight or get off the couch or put down the soda.

    HONESTLY. WTF.
This, so MUCH. People are so backwards.

My mother has had a severe eating disorder for pretty much her whole life. When I found out I was SO devastated by it. I took it so hard, and it made me feel so worthless. She went through a mean phase where she would say things about my weight and I would fight back with "sorry mom I don't want to throw up like you to be skinny."  I seriously think this is the root of my weight struggle. Not trying to make excuses, but when little girl's can't look up to their own mom, it really fucks them up.

I agree on the weight loss- unless you have an underlying medical issue, I can't stand to listen to people crab about their weight if they're not willing to DO something about it. You didn't become overweight magically, and it's not just going to magically disappear.

Listen rude people. People are not just fat to be fat. They don't complain just to complain.
According to the BMI I'm obese. Poor decision making got me 80% of the way there- stress eating got me the rest of the way. And I don't complain about my weight unless I'm working out AND eating better and not seeing a change over a 4 week period.  There are plenty of healthy ways to deal with stress. Eating is not one of them. I made that decision- nobody held a gun to my forehead and forced me to eat the things I ate.

I can't get on board saying that being overweight is always a symptom of a medical condition. Perhaps an effect of not having proper coping mechanisms, but not always simply a symptom of a medical condition.

You realize being overweight is a symptom right? There is always an underlying medical issue.
Being overweight because you're lazy IS the medical issue in some cases.  If you have a medical reason for not being able to exercise or eat better, I am 100% okay with you bitching about it.  But if you're otherwise healthy, gained weight because you went out to eat too many times and never go for a walk, let alone the gym, then I don't want to hear you complain about your weight if you're not willing to at least try to do something about it.
Good thing I don't care what people are 100% okay with. I don't need anyone's permission to "bitch" about my life.

I have a hard time staying motivated to exercise because I've been overweight my whole life and have serious doubts on my success. I have low self-esteem so I'm always embarrassed to go the gym. It's a battle for me.

You must live a very charmed life.
I wish I lived a very charmed life.  I had an eating disorder for 17 years.  I also have a shit load of medical issues that keep me from being able to exercise 90% of the time.  I do what I can to eat healthy and keep my weight stable.  I have a BMI of 43.  But I try.

    Depression = medical issue
Compulsive over eating = medical issue
Taking meds that make you gain weight = medical issue

I'm  not going to judge you because you're overweight.  I'm overweight.  Unless I know you, I don't have any way of knowing if you're trying, so I'm going to assume you are.  But when I know you, and I have to listen to you complain that you want to get weight loss surgery because you don't like to cook and going out to eat every night is your only option and that you don't have time to exercise because you have to watch 6 hours of TV.  I'm not okay with that.

And if you honestly cannot just put down the sandwich (assuming you're saying that because you're eating too much) then you need to see someone about compulsive over eating or stress eating. THOSE ARE MEDICAL ISSUES!

  • I feel like bitching about weight is like talking about the weather. It's just something women all have in common, even the skinny girls, gives us a way to show empathy toward one another. It does drive me nuts when a beautiful woman complains about being ugly, I want to shake her and ask who made her so self-loathing.

(quote fail) I completely agree with the weight thing. I have no sympathy for overweight people. In fact, and I know I'll take heat for this and I'm fine with it since this is an UO thread, I strongly dislike overweight people. I don't understand how people can't keep themselves in some sort of physical health. I'm not saying everyone needs to be a sports illustrated model or be bulging with muscle, but there is no reason why you have to be overweight. Medical issue or not - get out and walk. Put down the cheetos and mountain dew and pick up some fresh fruit and a bottle of water. It infuriates me when I see overweight children.
  • I hate when people complain about dumb things like its the biggest problem in the world. Some people have real problems and I can't tell you what I would give to have my biggest issue in life be something trivial.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @thekikimonster it breaks my heart to read that *hugs*

To be very honest and opened, I lost 110 lbs because of an eating disorder. I never talk about it, because I'm very ashamed of that. I had to reducate myself about food, which is a day to day struggle.

People kept on congratulating me on the weight loss. If only they knew. They were the pushers to my addiction.

  • I've had weight loss surgery and it saved my life. There are several people in this thread who can absolutely go fuck themselves for their uneducated bullshit opinions.
Kiki, I also want to clarify my position. I definitely don't think that people who choose weight loss surgery are lazy and/or taking the easy way out. I've had several people in my family do it after all other weight loss options failed, and in many ways I think it's a HARDER way to gain health than the modify your exercise+ food decisions route.

My statement was more to the mainstream folks who have 20-30 pounds to lose, pick up a fad diet, or exercise for a week, don't see results, quit, and say to hell with it because it "didn't work".

I'm a huge proponent of making life-long wellness decisions, and unfortunately in our current society of instant gratification, those types of decisions are the exception, and not the rule. Every where you turn there is a pill, a shake, a wrap, or a seasoning that claims that it will change your life with no other commitment necessary. I think people have become overly-reliant on these snake oil quick fixes to actually commit to making the changes wellness takes.

I know I'm the pot calling the kettle black. It's only been in the past 2 months that I've started making solid decisions again and truly working on changing the framework in which I exist. Currently I'm the fat girl giving nutrition and wellness advice. But I *have* lost 60+ pounds in the past and kept it off for 5+ years. I know the work that it takes to lose weight, and the changes that it takes to KEEP it off.

I highly doubt this whole topic is just about people who need to lose 20-30 pounds.I don't think most people agree with fad diets or a magic pill but the reality is unless you have lived in that person's shoes you have no idea what else is going on or what else they have been through to get them where they are at. You aren't just the pot calling the kettle black, you are actually the typical nay sayer on this topic. Someone overweight who lost weight and thinks they just get what everyone has gone through.

I've always been overweight but when I was younger I was raped and I gained a huge amount of weight afterwards. No one knew why or what happened to me because I was so ashamed so I ate all my feelings. I tried to lose weight but I was so depressed that getting up and doing anything about it was impossible. I tried many things but in my state of mind, I couldn't keep up with that diet, exercise program, for more than few weeks. I saw plenty of therapists to work through it all but it just didn't help. Getting on the scale and seeing 1-2 pounds gone in a month after that much work when I was already that depressed was DEVASTATING. I would give up. I assure you plenty of people had the same opinion of me as you do of others; I was just lazy, I didn't try hard enough, I wanted that instant gratification. It breaks my heart for the people in your life that have to deal with this kind of crap. I assure you, your opinion is shoving them further into their hole.

I 100% agree with this. And to add, I find email thank you notes for weddings as well. Or posting your generic thank you note on Facebook and tagging your guests so they can see it.
