Back to school!

Anyone else headed back to school in the next few weeks?

What kind of classes are you taking? Online or on campus? How many times a week? How much longer until you graduate? What is your major?

I jumped at the chance to take an online class last night and rearranged my schedule/courses to be able to spend more time with G. I'm taking the last clinical practicum for my degree (SLP), an urban studies class, and an anatomical psychology class (the last two are just to fulfill my credit requirement). I'm taking two on campus and one online. My clinical class is twice a week, the psych class is twice a week...so M,W,T,Th, but before I switched it up, I was going in the morning AND night on M & W, so it's a little better. I graduate in December! My major is Communication Sciences & Disorders (SLP).

    I actually head back tonight! I'm majoring in accounting. This semester I am taking Essentials of biology every Wednesday night from 6-9. I'm also taking a late start class that is online. It's art appreciation. I've been putting these off because I don't care for either one. Stupid gen eds. I work full time so this is a pretty good load for me. If all goes well I should graduate in the spring. Tonight will be my first time actually sitting in a classroom in years. I'm nervous! Do I just take my text book, notebook, pens, and highlighters?

    Woohoo to graduating in December, BBJ!  

    SM0524: I always bring my laptop to classes, too, in case professors want you to do something online.  I also bring snacks.  Lots of snacks!  That's the only way I stay awake in night classes.

    This is my last year of my PhD program!!!!!!  My 9 credit hours each semester will be dissertation units.  Next semester, I'll also take an online class.  They increased the class requirements for the additional certification (BCBA) I'm going for so I'm going to go ahead and take it while someone else is paying for it!  This semester, I'll just be gone for a few hours in the morning each day to collect data and, hopefully, take some time alone to write at Starbucks or somewhere similar.  DD will go to a sitter each day since DH decided to stay working with his douchcanoe boss until Christmas for the money.

    I am starting my Master's in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) program September 3rd.  ABA is used to help those with Autism.  I have been in the field for about four years and am excited to take the next step.  I have the option of going to the school or doing it online but I think I am going to try to do it primarily online so I can see Riley more, even though I know time management will be very difficult.  I will be taking two classes a semester and am starting off with Behavior Assessment and Research Methods and Design.  I am hoping to finish the program in 2 years, get my degree, and take the BACB exam to become a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) for an Elementary school, hopefully the one I work for now!

    I'm taking Educational Psychology for Teachers. It's an online course which I love! I have my bachelors in communicative disorders and I'm trying to get into a masters program. @Bigbootyjudi, are grad programs as competitive where you are? Average gpa to get in here in California is a 4.0. It's ridiculous for those of us with work experience(3 years as a SLPA) and a 3.5 gpa.

    LOL, @CRey13. I don't even want to talk about it.

    But...I will ;) Yes, especially in SLP. There are about 25 spots per the five schools that offer the SLP graduate program in Michigan. Nationwide, there's a 20% chance you'll get into grad school on your first application. Average GPA that is considered "competitive" here is 3.5, but my counselor has told me multiple times that 3.5 is the bottom of the barrel and it'll be a cold day in hell. She flat out told me that I have to have either a 3.8+ and an average GRE score or a 3.6+ and an awesome GRE score.

    I took the GRE two years ago and did miserable on it. I'm horrible at standardized exams and always have been. One of my good friends had a 3.6, 1100 on the GRE (old scoring), and a recommendation letter from a board member from our university and was denied at every school she applied to. Another friend of mine switched to Audiology and LOVES it.

    I'm not sure what I'm going to do after this semester. I'm already $53,000 in debt, so I have two options; go to grad school (3 years here and a year of UNPAID fellowship) or go back to school and enroll in a 15 month accelerated nursing program to receive my BSN. The problem is that I'm out of government loans, unless I go to grad school, so if I go the BSN route, I'll have to pay via private loans or my money tree in the backyard...or scholarships if those are around.

    @bigbootyjudi. This is my fourth round of apps. I refuse to give up. I've retaken classes to replace Bs with As and I have a decent GRE score. This time I have a letter of rec from the Head of Special Ed from my district as well as 6 letters of rec from SLPs I work with. One of my coworkers graduated from the main program I am trying to get into and has personally contacted the head of admissions. Fingers crossed that I get in this time! And good luck to you as well!!!

    Oh my gosh, girl! Fourth?!!! I cannot believe you haven't gotten in with all the experience you have. Where do you live that you're able to be a SLPA? It's not a position offered in MI. I'm not sure how much more I'd make per hour anyways (I make ~$16 now).

    FX for you, seriously! I feel your pain!

    I'm in California. I had to take an additional course and do 80 intern hours on top of my bachelors. Pay ranges in my area from $19-$32 depending on the district and your level of education and experience.

    I am a teacher AND I am taking grad school classes this year - yikes!

    The school where I teach starts the Wednesday after Labor Day.  I have juniors and senior for English; my school leader actually called this morning to see if I would take one more class and be full time.  Yay, bigger salary and INSURANCE!!!!  I am thrilled.  Plus, it is super easy: facilitating students who are doing course recover online.  Cake walk!  And now I get two planning periods after that, as all full time teachers in my program do.  (As a part-time teacher, I only had one before, which was planning for three preps.  Not enough time to plan for project based learning!)

    I am also starting a masters program in literacy studies.  After this, I can be a K-12 reading specialist.  I am taking two classes: one is totally online, one is hybrid.  For the hybrid class, I do have to drive about 40 minutes to campus three times during the semester.  One is a foundations class about topics in education (the book actually looks awesome) and the other is about current issues and trends in literacy.

    If I can take two classes in the fall, winter, and summer sessions, I can finish this in two years.  That is my goal, because around that time Charlotte will begin preschool and we'd like to buy a new house (read: renovation project) so the large salary bump would be nice!

    I am really, really hoping that since I went to a VERY challenging undergrad liberal arts college, I will find the graduate classes not too challenging.

    Can you tell I am pretty excited?  Hopefully my excitement will propel me through all the work that is ahead.
