Swollen ankles = my paranoia...

Hopefully!

I had pre-e last pregnancy. I suppose anyone who's read my posts know this and it seems to be the main topic(s) I focus on. I'm hopping this pregnancy doesn't lead to pre-e again. Being induced last time left a horrible impression on me of giving birth and was somewhat traumatizing with my baby being taken away from me and put in the NICU for a week. So I'm just wondering, does anyone else have swollen ankles already? I'm 28 weeks and after a long day of work my ankles are nasty! You can press into my skin and make an indent. I'm drinking alot of water and putting my feet up when I get home but I'm worried this means I'm headed for another induction all over again. I have an ultrasound this thurs and seeing my OB next week. Hopefully everything else is still doing well.

Re: Swollen ankles = my paranoia...

  • My ankles are swelling a bit too. Some days are worse than others, but I have also had pitting edema and wondered the same thing. Any headache, cramp or otherwise sets me off too. Lets stay positive!

Ummm, I can't remember where pitting edema falls on the call your Dr now scale, but I'd call and ask anyway. Pitting edema is not good, I know that.
Well I'm thinking it's not bad yet. My blood pressure is still good, I just did a 24hr protein check last thurs and glucose test. No headaches either. Hopefully my Ultrasound Thurs. comes out good and my apt next thurs is positive. Baby is still very active too... it's just a thought that lingers in the back of my mind that I'll have to put another baby through induction again. It also goes down at night after having my feet up. It'd just be comforting to know if others are going through this as well

  • Swelling isn't always an indicator of pre-e. If you are having headaches and vision changes I would be much more worried. Or if your OB says you have protein in your urine or swelling on just one side of your body. I know your risk is higher since you have already had pre-e, but try not to worry about just swelling, it very well could be just normal pregnancy. If you are really worried, call your doc and see if they will do a 24hr urine for you to see if your protein is high.

Mine have been fairly bad for the last few weeks. WITH pitting edema. I'm 27 w. my doc said that's not really an indicator she's concerned about unless it is accompanyed by high bp and protein in the urine. She said it a "neutral" symptom. Put your feet up, drink water, avoid salt..convince your SO for a foot rub!

Hot and humid causes swelling, but not pitting edema. I get swollen here from heat and humidity, but it's different than what the op describes.
Mine is pitting edema, and it gets pretty bad. But it went away completely for days when I changed climates. I'm not saying don't call your Dr - I definitely don't know that yours is no big deal. Just that my Dr knows about mine and says it is heat related. Here's an example from when it was really awful. I've had two good Dr appointments since.
Wow! Mine is def. not that bad. The weather has been getting humid and hot here again after it had been in the 60's. If it gets worse I will def call my dr. but it's nice to know I'm not the only one with nasty swelling ankles. Another month of work and I'll be done for good to be a stay at home mom and wifey! So looking forward to that. Hours on my feet is no fun

  • I had pitting edema with my first pregnancy starting around now and OB said it wasn't anything to be concerned about if it didn't accompany the other pre- e signs ( vision changes, high bp, protein in urine.)

  • I'm have such bad ankle swelling that I'm not sure my ankles really exist any more. I've had it for like 3 months now. No matter what I do it doesn't go away. Doctor told me that it isn't a big deal if it isn't accompanied by other symptoms. She said hand/face swelling or dizziness I need to call immediately. She said the ankle swelling is likely a combination of heat and too much salt intake.

Thanks! I try to stay positive. I just hope I can have a natural delivery with no complications. I would love to be able to hold my baby as soon as he is born and breastfeed him. Both of which I didn't get a chance to do with my first. It's heartbreaking not to be able to bond with your baby when they're born.

Funny. I'm in the car with my husband after work. I immediately took off my shoes because my feet are killing me and I have been screaming "ewwww, I have Kim Kardashian feet" over and over again. Last week when he saw my swollen ankles he said, "put your shoes back on, Miss Piggy." He's lucky I have a good sense of humor because I cracked up but I have also told other people that story who did not think it was funny. He learned his lesson and he is just smiling awkwardly at me now while I go on about my Kim K feet. That being said, you're not alone, my friend.
LOL Great! I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Though sucks I know. I'm thankful I got a stool for work now to at least sit when I need to.

  • With DD, I had pitting edema by 28w - I had a normal pg and delivery.  With DS I first had cankles last week (24w), but they subsided some.  I asked my m/w about it Monday and she said just to drink plenty of fluids and I had heard to stay away from salt and put my feet up when I can - also read about support hose.  I hope this is a "neutral" symptom for you.

  • My dr. told me to do 2 miles a day to reduce swelling & to walk fast enough that you break a sweat. After the walks my feet (& fingers) look bigger but they go down to normal after a rest. also, lots of water - 3 liters a day was recommended & keep the sweets to a minimum.
  • I had really bad swollen ankles early in this pg and then they weren't so bad, and now they are starting to swell again. I had really swollen ankles with DD most of her pg.

Just drink lots of water, go for walks (in the a/c if you can), put your feet up when they swell, and try to watch your salt intake.

  • I have been having swollen ankles for awhile now too. I asked dr last week, and he said it was removed as an indicator or pre-e several years ago. Just make sure to drink lots of water, avoid salt as much as possible, and put them up when you can. I also got a small massager and massage my feet for 20-30 minutes before bed each night and it makes a big difference.  Just a thought- but it works really well for me! Good Luck!

  • Have you been monitoring your BP at all?  You can usually go to any drug store and use their monitor.

I still think it might be worth a call to the doctor.  When in doubt, give them a call.  And if they tell you it's nothing to worry about it, then you'll feel better, and they'll know about the issue.
