The truth about maternity underwear, please?

What's the deal with it? Is it really necessary? I feel like my current underwear would do just fine, but please tell me! Should I expect to buy new undies?

P.S. Sorry if this was already asked. I can't keep up sometimes.

I thought it was a gimmick too, but... I loved it! I wore the fold over briefs from Motherhood but did not fold them down

this. I bought a 5 pack at motherhood near the end...almost wish I had done it a little sooner because I stretched out a few of my favorite pairs. wide load problems.

I didn't get any last time and it was fine. Didn't even ruin the elastic in the ones I wore the whole time.

I recently bought a whole bunch of the Victoria's Secret lace hip ones just becase i needed a refesh, and I think theywill be great because there's no elastic to dig in when the belly (or hip) growth starts.

I didn't buy any last time and I stretched out most of them. I wore the VS lacie (one size fits all) underwear and by the time I lost the baby weight, they were too big. I might invest in some maternity panties this time.

Not needed. I wore my throngs the entire time with DS. Like PP said, after delivery you will need the hospital issued undies. I also went out and bought a pack of cheap fruit of a loom full briefs that I didn't care if they got nasty. They were great for after delivery!!!

I forget why I bought them last time, but they were glorious. A low rise brief from Thyme. I think my old ones were riding up my butt and the elastic digging into my love handles. The maternity panties stayed in place and didn't cut into me.

I didn't before, but after two kids and a stretched out stomach (short torso... skin didn't all go back), I had higher waisted (not incredibly high!) ones and even now I can feel a consealed bump trying to peek up, which is making them tight and uncomfortable in the front. I did see those fold over ones from motherhood that I may buy a three pack of is all. No harm no foul! The VS last waist hip hugger ones (I only have one pair of that style) are nice because they dip down in the front and like I said, are lace waist. I will debate between the two. Once the bump moves up and out, some of my regular ones may still work though!

My thought is that it all depends on your current shape and how your belly/hips expand AND what style you currently wear.

With my last LO I couldn't stand how my regular low-rise bikini and boy shorts fit me.

I got the low rise from Thyme.

I loved ten so much, I went back for more.

I had tried on many styles elsewhere but couldn't find anything comfortable.

The only new underwear I bough were some granny panty briefs to wear home from the hospital...I rocked those the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy!

I bought some wal mart granny panties in a size up for my third trimester and used them postpartum as well.

ETA: I was actually thinking I would probably buy a few maternity this time around just so I feel "nice." I tend to carry low and supposedly you carry lower with each pregnancy. Since this is my third baby, I have a feeling even the bigger undies won't be comfy. The elastic was still tight and a little uncomfortable on my "waist" even if they did fit my ass.

I never bought maternity underwear. I was good in my usual size until I was in my third trimester and then I bought some one size up. I gained 50lbs with my pregnancy.

Also, the ones I bought in third tri were good for post partum because they were full briefs.
