Gestational Diabetes Test

For those of you who have had it done, did you know it was scheduled before your appointment? I have an appointment tomorrow and I'll be 25 weeks. I'm just wondering if you think I'll have the test tomorrow or not? My OB didn't mention it last time I saw her, however I was there for bleeding, and now I'm wondering if that trumped the "Oh yeah, prepare to be poked at your next appointment" conversation...

I am 24 weeks and going in for mine tomorrow. They did tell me last appointment. My dr told me I had to get it between 24 and 26 weeks...so you may have to get it?

My OB sends us to the hospital for the test so we know for sure when the appointment is. Surely they will tell you prior to your appointment.

My doctor didn't say anything at my last appointment. I go in on Thursday and am assuming since I will be almost 25 weeks that I am having it done. I also read the packet they gave us at our first visit and it had a schedule of what to expect at each appointment. It was listed for this upcoming one but since my doctor didnt say anything, who knows if it will happen or not

Curious - as I am in Canada and things seem slightly different here in terms of tests/appointments etc.

Do you have to do the gestational diabetes test, or is it your choice to take one?

(I have to decide whether or not I want to get it done. My midwife said its up to me, as I have no history, no symptoms, not a lot of weight gain and generally eat healthy and exercise moderately.)

I just had my checkup today and my doctor gave me a form for my diabetes test. He told me to go have it done in 3 weeks. Ill be 27 weeks. I'm in Ontario.

Im not sure if it is because i have a midwife - not a doctor - that makes it a choice or not.
OR I thought maybe in the US things were a bit different. (My midwife also told me they do not measure total length of fetus either - just limbs/chest/head etc...but I have seen everyone else post their length/weight results on here.........and most are from the US so Im just assuming practice is different here compared to where most of you are.)

I believe all doctors do the test. It is better to get the test done and rule out GD than not get the test and have the possibility you might have GD. As far as the testing goes, as PP said, there isn't much in way of preparation for the one hour so it may be done at your appointment OP. With DS I think I was forewarned about it though.

I have mine at my next appointment in 3 weeks. I'll be 28 weeks then. My doctor told me today I'll get it at the next appointment.

I'm at a different practice this time, but with my previous two I was given the glucose drink and instructions at the end of my appointment to take home. That way when I walked in for my next appointment the first thing they did was the blood draw and I didn't have to hang around for an extra hour. It was all done in office. After I failed (both times) the 3 hour test was scheduled separately and done at a different location.

You don't *have* to do any test. You can refuse whatever you want. It may not be smart but its your body, your rights.

My doctor told me that at my next appointment I'd be having it. They don't make me fast before drinking the sugary drink but I'm not supposed to eat a lot of carbs or sugar beforehand.

At my 24 week appointment today I was given the lab write up for the test. It will be done before my next visit at 28 weeks. I was told there was no preparation needed whatsoever, but it seems some practices require you to fast. I'd call and check with your doctor.

Even though the glucose test may be optional, I would opt to get tested. You really never know what could happen and it's a test that is offered for a reason. If you have GD, you'll want to know so you can change your diet and be monitored more closely. Also, as far as I know not having symptoms including a lack of weight gain does not mean you won't have GD. It's about how your body processes sugar. All types of women, skinny or not, can get GD.

Ya which is why I likely will do the test. I thought my midwife would recommend it, or at least encourage it, but she didn't......
I guess I was more curious on whether testing here vs US was different somehow. Since my midwife seemed so lax on the subject, and everyone keeps talking about their appointments it just got me thinking.

My midwife booked it for me at my 16week appointment for when I'm 28weeks, the same time ill be having a growth scan. She booked it in advance so I could have the two on the same date and also you have to fast from the night before.

Last pregnancy/OB -- I went for one of my appointments (was around 24 weeks I think) and she told me to go in the following Monday for the test at a certain time, so it was flat out scheduled. Was told to fast from midnight until my test was done, no anything.

This pregnancy/OB -- at my appointment three weeks ago, OB gave me the lab slip and said to come in sometime this week, just walk in whenever I had time and get it done so it'd be done before the appointment I've got next week. Was told I have to do absolutely nothing, eat and drink like normal. I'm still probably going to not eat, because I'm gonna go right when I get up before I get hungry, but still.

I get mine done at a lab, not my OB's office. You'd know beforehand because you have to fast (most likely) and it'd be a longer appt since you drink the sugary drink then wait an hr.

I remember with DS I knew before the appointment but I don't remember how far along I was or many details about it. There is usually a long wait in my old office so I think they just gave me the drink when I walked in. This time around with my new OB I got the drink at my last appointment. I will go next week at 25 weeks and I am supposed to drink an hour before my appointment.

I have to go for mine some time between August 29 and September 19. It's my choice when I go. This will be my first 2 hour GTT though. With my previous pregnancies it was 3 hours.

I had my 24w appointment today. Before I left, they gave me the drink and told me to drink it an hour before my next appointment at 28w. No fasting required... Just not supposed to load up on sugar before the test.

Yes, they should have told you; they told me prior to the appointment because you have to really watch what you eat prior to the appointment. With DS I had mine in the morning and was told to eat just eggs until after the test.

I'm having mine Monday, I'll be 24 weeks on Friday. Doctor already told me last time that I don't need to fast, he just said don't eat anything sugary unless I want to fail. They won't give me the drink until I get there, so I need to sit there for the hour. I hope I don't throw up, I've heard it's awful.

I am 25 weeks and just had a dr. apt. today. My next apt. is in 3 weeks. Within the next 3 weeks I have to go to Quest Diagnostics and get it done myself.

I was given the drink at my last appt. with instructions to drink it 30 mins. prior to my next appt. time. I'll be just over 27 weeks at that time.

My doctor offered for them to do it in their lab downstairs but when I called, they said they didn't accept my insurance, which I find weird. So I'm off to Quest next week. I hate that place, I'm jealous of everyone who gets to do it in their doctors office.

I was wondering the same thing at my 34 week visit and I called the office. They said thy perform the test at 28 weeks. When I went to the 24 week test they did tell me about it because I have to come an hour before my apt.

My doc specifically told me that I didn t have to fast. But....my friend had a theory that if you don't fast you will probably fail and have to take the three hour test. I have no clue but just to be save Im going to eat very light that day.

I think it's typically done closer to 28 weeks, unless there are indications or increased risk.

ETA: Looks like a lot of people don't fast!! Maybe they don't do that anymore...it's been almost 7 years since I've done it.

Ya my doctor told me I don't need to fast, just don't eat something sugary. Mine isn't until 10:45, there's no way I can fast until then, I need some breakfast.

I'm also in Canada and my dr said it was required as sometimes they can't catch it with just your urine tests alone.

My dr. said DO NOT fast, but I am supposed to make the appt for the morning and eat absolutely NO sugar before hand... all the different opinions make me wonder how accurate this test can possibly be..

With DS they gave me the drink in the bottle and told me to take it home and to have it done within a few days at my convenience (since you have to wait an hour after you drink it).

The pass/fail standards vary slightly depending on whether or not they tell you to fast. Actually, it's not even accurate to call it passing or failing. The one hour test is a diagnostic tool to see if the three hour fasting test is necessary. The goal (usually) is to be under 140. I had, what was considered to be elevated levels at 135, with my previous two pregnancies and had to undergo further testing. The majority of women with elevated one hour levels, go on to pass the three hour test.

My doctors told me at my previous appt for my test, I was given instructions on what I could and couldn't eat and this orange drink that I had to drink an hour before my appointment. They drew my blood and I went about my normal appointment., I failed that test so I just went and had my three hour test on Monday (which to me is cruel and unusual punishment telling a pregnant woman she cant eat is just wrong in any sense of the world). So now I am waiting to find out what happens next. I would ask, I am sure your not the first to call and ask and wont be the last.

Done between 24-28 weeks so at this weeks 24 week appointment I'll get script to do it at Lab Corp. the drink is dreadful, especially if you aren't into sweet stuff.

They say to avoid cards and sugar the day or and day before the test. Protein is the way to go over stuff like greek yogurt that day of the test

Also heard to avoid all soda/sugary drinks and fresh fruit.

Passed the first time with plenty of room to spare, hoping that happens this time as well

I think that tests are a little more at your discretion with a midwife. I have an OBGYN and will be taking the test and had to last time as well. Good thing because I had GD last time and you need to control it with diet.

I have mine scheduled for the morning of 9/5 at 27w. No fasting, but the OB told me to just have an egg or something before the test so it's a true read. I have to go to the lab and drink it there while waiting the hour. Guess I better bring some reading material! REALLY hoping I pass this!
