Re: .

  • With my second I went to the ER at 4wks due to heavy bleeding. Everything was fine though my body was just trying to produce a period. They gave me more pictures there then my doctor.
  • Loading the player...
  • I got an early (7 weeks or so) in office ultrasound last time. I was seeing a different midwife then and that's just what they did. Just a quickie that the midwife did herself. Nothing fancy.

  • I had a chemical pregnancy a few months ago, so my OB wanted to get me in a little bit early, but it is their standard practice to see patients for the first time between 7 and 9 weeks.  I was one day early at 6w6d.  It was basically just a dating ultrasound so that they can set up a NT scan if I want one.

Ha!  I "scored" by having infertility for years, doing IVF, not being genetically related to the babies I'm carrying and having 2 babies.

  • @cassiekick are you able to choose a different OB with your insurance?  I don't really think all early u/s's are necessary, but it does sound like you would like one for peace of mind (and there is nothing wrong with that) and have asked your OB for exactly what you want.  If there's one thing I've learned in the last couple of years, it's that you shouldn't settle for medical care that you don't feel comfortable with.  If you're willing to "shop around", it might be worth it to get with an OB who is willing to work with your wants a little willingly.

I can't believe how offensive some women are on this forum... From what I understand we are all pregnant women with our own fears, worries, excitement etc etc... And this is a place for us all to support each other?? This woman, as a first time mum to be who asked a legitimate question and has received far to many sarcastic unreasonable responses. I'm sure all of you who seem to be rather angry and a bit ott will remember how exciting it is finding out you're pregnant for the first time? And how you really could not wait to see your baby? I understand this is a sensitive subject for some of you- but I don't think that half of the responses were necessary. Just be nice, and if you can't be happy and excited for a new mum- dont comment.
I see honesty in the other posts, no one said they weren't happy for her.

@LottieLoomes she asked how, we answered. It's just that most of us who have them have had losses. That's a reality..I don't think anyone was not excited for her, we were just answering her question honestly.

  • My regular gyno (who does not do obstetrics) does dating ultrasounds so he has information to go on with referring me to another doctor. He didn't charge me for the ultrasound with my last pregnancy, just a visit. He's a really great person (I know him outside of being my doctor). My other u/s were deemed medically necessary (ruling out risk of ectopic, anatomy scan, then going past term).
I asked my Dr about deeming it medically necessary to rule out ectopic and confirming fetal age and placement ( these are listed as acceptable reasons for a scan by my insurance company) but she continued to insist I was no risk. She just kept saying I was the right age, right weight, cervix looked good etc. which I know are great things and I wish I could turn off the crazy in my brain but it's not working out so well. I think she is a "hands off" kind of ob. Which will come in handy for a non-intervention natural birth, but this no u/s thing is tough. :)
Well if she wont give you the care you feel you deserve they maybe you should find a new ob.

  • This is my first pregnancy too, and I am a low risk patient. I have been feeling the same exact way. LIke I needed to hear from a doctor yes, you are pregnant, and yes you are healthy and are ok. My OB scheduled my first appointment for 9/9 and I'm having an ultra sound that day too.

  • My doctor does an early one around 6-8 weeks, another at 11-12 weeks (part of the NT scan) and then the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.
  • Maybe it's just me that picks up the underlying sarcastic tones then?

A few people seem to agree with my comment though...
  • My first was scheduled for 10 wks, but I had one in the ER because of spotting. When my husband found out we were getting an early US he lit up in the cutest way and was joking (but not really) that we should've gone to the ER sooner! The joke was on us though...the hospital wouldn't give me a copy. I had a tantrum though and can go back in and pick it up. It is, after all, MY record.
  • My ob has a u/s machine and tech in her office so does a dating at8 weeks, nt scan at 12 w and anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

That being said, because of my loss history they are putting me as high risk and I will be getting one every visit.

You have two options keep your dr ( if you're in love with them in all other aspects) or shop around for one that will do a dating us and is covered by your insurance.

  • Honestly, I think some of the snark (if there is any...I like to see the best in people) is that this has been asked before. Props to you for not getting defensive. It's ok to feel like that. I would be worried if you didn't. And if you think this was bad, just stick around, it's going to get really wild. You also posted this not long after some of the "omg, everyone is having miscarriages, an I going to lose my baby, too?" threads. Try to relax, stress is bad for you and baby.

A few people seem to agree with my comment though...

They may come off as sarcastic because of the wording of the op and the only reason they are "scoring" early u/s are due to loss and would give anything to be told by the dr that they are perfect an dont need one until 18-20 weeks.

Oh definitely. But it seems like anything you ask on these boards is met with those tones from at least someone. It should be that we wish the best for all the mothers on here, congratulations and luck and advice for old and new, those who have had difficulties and those who are lucky enough not to have any trouble. There really is no need for anyone to be combative.
And I fully expect even this post to be criticized because that's just the way it goes.

  • So then... Playing as devils advocate...

Because one lady has had a loss, and someone else is a first time mum, and is asking a innocent question... Quite obviously unaware of the answers...

Is that a reason to be sarcastic and snappy?

    I'm not sure it is...

  • @cassiekick I understand what you are feeling. Just try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy as best as you can. Even after you see your LO, (early or later) the worry doesnt go away.

Also I dont think you meant to be rude or disrespectful in any way. It just sounds like this is the way you talk. :)

An option for you if you wanted to get an elective early US is to google and see if there is a 3D U/S place in your area that you can pay to have one done.

  • Honestly I didn't realize that a dating u/s wasn't standard operating procedure until this post. We use Tricare (military) and they say that they used to do the first u/s between 10-12 weeks , but they changed it to 8-9 weeks to try to catch any unsuccessful pregnancies and not leave the parents to be in the dark. They also do an anatomy scan around 18-20 weeks. We DS we also got a 3rd around 30-something because he was measuring really far head and she wanted to check on him. (We also got a 4th peek at him when we went down to the local community college sonography training facility. They do free ultrasounds in exchange for giving the students someone to practice on. This might be something you could look into)

I'm sure it's normal for some doctors to wait until the anatomy scan, but it's definitely not uncommon for people to get a dating u/s. If you feel like your doctor is brushing off your anxiety then maybe now is the time to start shopping for a new OB. You need to REALLY trust this person and need to feel heard and understood.

  • Everyone is acting as though this poor girl went on the board for previous losses and said "look at me, I'm so much luckier than you! I'm going to get care that's going to make yours more expensive. So there! " all she did was all a question. Try to remember that although her pregnancy came quickly it doesn't mean she may not have problems down the road and it doesn't make her pregnancy any less important or scary. I'm willing to bet she has as much sympathy for those who have a hard time having children, try to have a little sympathy for her!

@cassiekick - I have had no previous loss, and my doctors office gives early dating u/s ... As early as 5 weeks as long as your HCG levels are above 2000.

They also did "glamour shots" throughout my first pregnancy, because they have the equipment and techs on staff to be able to do so.

So, I really think it comes down to your OB's office equipment and their standard operating procedures.

This go round I was going to choose to wait close to 8 weeks before getting an u/s because all you'll really see before then is a little bean. It's a super cute bean though :) I went in to see my doc
at what I thought was 7.5 weeks, and turned out I was only 4w and they couldn't see anything. So then I was worried it could've been ectopic. But all is well.

Definitely look into other OB offices if you're not happy with yours. And I think it's ok to be a bit selfish when it comes to seeing your baby. I find it hard to believe any pregnant woman would turn down u/s whether they were "normal" or "high risk" ;)

    Good luck!

If you like your dr, you don't need to switch there are places that give ultrasounds for under $75!!!

I didn't make up reasons. 2 people in my family had ectopic pregnancies so I mentioned it to my Dr as a legitimate concern- asking about genetics. Also just because I haven't had a loss does NOT mean I got pregnant right away. So many ppl are assuming the worst about my motives and intentions. Shouldn't we be practicing what we *hopefully* teach our children and keep our mouths shut if we don't have anything nice or productive to say?! As this is my first pregnancy I'm new to this whole birth club shenanigans but as soon as I figure out how to delete my question I will and rest assured I won't be asking another. Again, wishing you all a happy and healthy pg.
  • Sorry that your simple question which so normal to have has turned into a lullaby of miscarriages and infertility!
I think it's crazy your dr is waiting that long! As a matter of fact I would not see a dr who could not provide an ultrasound in his office! But you can always see soneone who give 3d ultrasounds. They also offer blank/white ultra sounds for less than $75!?!

Considering an u/s only takes maybe 30 minutes, I'm thinking the people that "deserve" an ultrasound have a fair chance of getting one and if she's the one paying for it (or her insurance) then who cares if she is requesting one? Asking to see her child to ease her mind does not make her horrible.

  • @elbug i think there is fishing for rudeness on both sides of this conversation. whenever you post something that is potentially offensive regardless of if you know it or not (and yes OP you apologized for how it came across and thats big of you) you are going to have some responses that you may not want or ask for. the key...for both sides is trying not to get your panties in a wad.

  • I am lucky enough to not have "scored" on reasons based on fertility. I go to a midwife and she has an ultrasound there. I paid a fee slightly higher than the fee I would pay through insurance to have one of the only 2 ultrasounds I will have during this pregnancy, barring complications. So I just avoided the insurance system altogether.

If it makes you feel better, there really isn't much to look at. It's just a little tissue clump, and it looks like a peanut (hence why people started calling their fetuses 'peanut' in the first place). Ultrasounds aren't a completely benign piece of medical equipment, which is why people generally don't give out ultrasounds every week unless something is wrong. Ultrasounds are there to determine the health of your baby, not for your personal enjoyment.

I'm guessing you've learned your lesson.

  • It's variable. I have no history of loss or infertility, but the standard protocol at my OB is a dating/viability US at 8-9 weeks, NT scan at 12 weeks, and anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

And I am AH-MAZED by the things that get called snarky or offensive on this board. This board is seriously mellow and friendly compared to a lot of Bump boards. Sometimes I wonder if I'm reading some alternate board, because the "stop being so mean" posts seem so out of place.
