  • Usually if you have a history of loss (like me) or infertility, you'll get an early u/s.

  • It's very common to only get one ultrasound. Unless you went through infertility treatments, have a medical problem or suffered multiple miscarriages.

I scored early ultrasounds for having gone through 6 years of infertility treatments. I also have a higher chance of miscarriage due to my age (40). So they like to monitor me early & often.

18weeks does sound a little long for your first one though. I checked with my insurance coverages (I have 2) & they said that 2 ultrasounds were covered under maternity coverage. Anything else would have to be ordered by the doctor & would have to go under regular insurance & not maternity coverage. Which means it will cost more. Not the whole amount of course but more. I'm waiting to get the bills for my first ultrasound.

You should call your insurance company directly and ask them what exactly they cover.

  • Infertility here..Dr. does it before he releases to ob

You will find that most people "score" an ultrasound early because they either started with a specialist re or had prior issues with prior pregnancies.

I had a dating ultrasound a few weeks ago, my cycles varied from 28 days to 155 days, most being between 30-40 days. In cases like mine, they can't depend on the LMP since EDD based on LMP are based on 28 day cycles.

EDIT: My MD did tell me that normally I would only have the 1 ultrasound at 18 weeks for the anatomy scan and that was it unless there was a medically necessary reason to do so.

  • I had a miscarriage in April and I won't have an ultrasound until 8.5 weeks. Not much to see until later anyways. All that matters is the little heartbeat

  • Most of us that are having an early u/s are only having them because we have some sort of medical history. Most providers wont do early u/s's unless medically necessary.

  • I'll get an early one because I've had a miscarriage. My first pregnancy would have been just Doppler until 2nd trimester.

I think on here you wind up with a larger representation of women who have had miscarriage or infertility issues because when it takes you longer, you're more likely to start looking for a support community. I don't think the 'normal' population winds up with as many, or such early ultrasounds as you'll see on these boards.

  • If you have a miscarriage like I did, you will also get an early ultrasound. Believe me, it isn't as 'nice' as you think being terrified that you won't find anything viable on the screen at 6 weeks.
  • Ok thanks. It's just that you pee on a stick and then nothing.... A dr visit at 8 weeks then an ultra sound at 18.... It just seemed like a lazy Dr. Guess not. Ill just twiddle my thumbs and hope for the best and be thankful im not high risk. Hopefully the hormones will level out soon and the feeling of terror will subside.
  • My OB does a dating u/s for all of her patients.  I believe part of the reason she does this is that she has the equipment in her office (it's pretty low-tech -- nowhere near as fancy as the Level II u/s used for anatomy scans) -- I'm not even sure she submits it to insurance; it's just so easy for her to flip it on and take a quick peek.

Receiving one ultrasound around 16-20 weeks is pretty much the norm unless you've had previous losses, been treated for infertility, or are otherwise considered high risk.

  • Did you have any symptoms that are causing the terror? If not, take it easy. I have never known true terror until becoming pregnant after a miscarriage. Enjoy your pregnancy if you can.
  • @cassiekick I do understand where you're coming from. Sometimes being on the forums doesn't help with the fact that you're not going to confirm a baby until much later especially given that there are a number of posts with women miscarrying who have symptoms and otherwise wouldn't know that there wasn't anything there without the ultrasound, it can really mess with your head. Just try and stay positive!

  • Everyone is scared...you just do your best to not worry about something that's not happening. If a miscarriage is going to happen it will happen, usually you can't do anything to stop them or prevent them.

  • I had one last week for dating reasons.  With my first I had one at 11 weeks for dating reasons.  The first bc I had been irregular and found out I was pregnant at 8 weeks.  This one, bc I have PCOS and hadn't had a period in months after bleeding for 8 weeks straight before that.  Even my OB was shocked that I got a BFP.  So I had blood testing and then a dating U/S.  With my 2nd we had an U/S at about 12 weeks, bc first the nurse couldn't find a HB and then the doctor couldn't find a HB with a Doppler or the abdominal U/S, she had to do transvaginal.  At that point, it's very rare to not find one with a Doppler, so we were freaking out.  Our insurance covers two U/Ss.  With my son, we had to have an BPP done the day before he was born to make sure he was still okay and to see if we would be released or if we had to stay and induce.  We had to stay.

U/Ss seem like wonderful things and it is very exciting to see your LO on the screen, but they can also be scary and provide heartbreaking news, so you might want to just be glad that your doctor doesn't see a reason for you to need one right now.

@1983sas Cramping and back pain. Oh and spotting after sex. All of which are completely normal. Sometimes too much forum is too much of a good thing. Reading about missed miscarriages, wondering why my pregnancy symptoms aren't as prevalent as others, comparing my dr visit to others..... As a control freak first time mom it's hard for me to keep my anxiety down to a healthy level. If I could just see that little heartbeat I think maybe, just maybe, I could sleep.
  • I think part of it is the insurance company, part medical history, and part the doctor's choice.

I have a history of loss but not due to normal reasons so my doctor says I'm good to go until week 10. I don't even see my OB/MW until week 10, ultrasound will NOT be done during our first appointment but possibly week 11 or 12 for me. I am trying not to be jealous hearing that a lot of these ladies have had u/s and doctors appointments already but really I just want to see my baby!

We'll get through. We just have to be patient.

I think the issue was the tone of your op, the tone didn't sound like you were looking for advice, more like whining that you weren't getting an ultrasound.

  • I just scored my first ultrasound this morning thanks to some terrifying heavy red bleeding. I'll have them weekly now thanks to the bleeding and 2 years of infertility, until I lose the pregnancy or graduate to my OB. 18 weeks does seem pretty late, but seriously, thank your lucky stars that you haven't needed one yet. I don't blame you for wanting to get in by 12 weeks though.

    Oct 12 - Jan 14: 3 clomid/TI cycles, 2 hysteroscopies, 2 IUIs, 1 BFP (MMC @ 12w), 2 more IUIs
    Feb 14: Gonal-f + IUI #5 = BFP! (EDD 11/4/14)
    Baby boy arrived 11/13/14!

  • I think it can also depend on the doctor. My office will take you whenever you like for your first appoint. With my mc I was in at 5w2d. This time i waited and will go in at exactly 7w tomorrow.

  • I had a trans vaginal us at 5 and a half weeks and am a 28 y/o FTM with no medical history.. My doctor just does the first at 6 weeks. i understand where you're coming from in terms of wanting peace of mind (i am super eager for my next appt at 8 weeks and they will do another us). If it matters a lot to you, I would call your insurance and see what they cover and then call your doctor and see if you have any optionality.

  • I know it's a hard wait! I whine to my husband all the time about not getting to see our lil P anytime soon. It's natural to want to see your baby! I try to just concentrate on the fact that its a good thing it's healthy and i don't NEED an U/s. good luck to you!

  • Honestly, on most BMB you would not see so many early ultrasound. I know in November 13 there weren't this many. Last pregnancy, I got an early ultrasound for dating purposes. This pregnancy because I lost the last. April has a ridiculous amount of PgAL ladies, the proof is in the PgAL check ins. I get that 18 weeks feels like forever. I'm sorry you have to wait so long. But, in my experience, an early u/s doesn't mean shit. With my first pregnancy, I thought it meant everything was ok...I saw the hb, even heard it. But, that went to hell. This time, they were monitoring me closely because of a previous loss. Now, after my u/s, it's even more so, because of fluid outside of my gestational sac. I know it's a nerve wracking time, but try to hang in there. At 9 or 10 weeks you could see if the doc will try the Doppler, you may be able to hear the hb then. Good luck!
  • Since I'm using a midwife, I don't get an US. But a lot of pregnancy centers offer US to moms. Even if it isn't a "crisis" pregnancy. So I get to schedule two for free at our local center! Plus I used to volunteer there so I may get an extra one! See if you have a local center and if they will offer US.
  • I can't believe how lucky I am living in the UK and having completely free medical care. I have my first scan due at 12 weeks, and then another at 20 weeks.

It's strange because the level of care you guys seem to get in the US seems so much more on the ball than over here (I'm 8 weeks and haven't even spoken to a Dr yet). I found it really frustrating that I only get to see the midwife when my first trimester is nearly over...

... But now I read about insurance and the cost of medical care and I realise I should have no complaints.

I hope you manage to get a scan before 18 weeks- I would certainly want to see the bean before that!
I'm a first time mum too and sooooo excited!

Wishing you loads of luck x
  • yeah, I'm old... so messed up cycles plus a loss in April = dating ultrasound

again, I'm old... so I get an NT scan around 12 wks... count your blessings!

  • I had an u/s at 8 weeks last time. We wanted to do an NT scan at 12 weeks so my OB did a dating u/s to make sure I was as far along as we thought so that the NT scan was done at the correct time.

My regular gyno (who does not do obstetrics) does dating ultrasounds so he has information to go on with referring me to another doctor. He didn't charge me for the ultrasound with my last pregnancy, just a visit. He's a really great person (I know him outside of being my doctor). My other u/s were deemed medically necessary (ruling out risk of ectopic, anatomy scan, then going past term).

  • I had one planned for 9 weeks, I guess a dating u/s.  But I ended up going in a week earlier, what we thought was 8 weeks to get an u/s because I was having severe ovary pain.  I ended up only being 5 weeks, 5 days but we got to see the flicker of the heart.  So I wasn't as far along as we thought, my cycles are longer. They also saw I have a cyst on my ovary.  I'm going back on Wednesday ( 2 weeks from my last one) for another u/s.  I guess just to check on things.

I can't imagine having to wait until 18 weeks.  I would say it's doctor's preference or maybe where you're from?  Because everyone I know has an u/s at 10 weeks.

I asked my Dr about deeming it medically necessary to rule out ectopic and confirming fetal age and placement ( these are listed as acceptable reasons for a scan by my insurance company) but she continued to insist I was no risk. She just kept saying I was the right age, right weight, cervix looked good etc. which I know are great things and I wish I could turn off the crazy in my brain but it's not working out so well. I think she is a "hands off" kind of ob. Which will come in handy for a non-intervention natural birth, but this no u/s thing is tough. :)
  • I was cramping and passing blood clots at 6 weeks, that's why they thought I might be ectopic. The u/s showed two gestational sacs then, but only one fetal pole. The one baby never developed. It wasn't just I was worried about ectopic. And trust me, you don't want to end up in your 42nd week of pregnancy.
