Brushing teeth

DS doesn't ever want me to brush his teeth. He use to want to do it himself (which would result in him just spinning the brush around) and now he just won't open his mouth. I don't think he is getting his teeth brushed good enough because of this battle. Has anyone gone through this and what did you find worked for you? Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Re: Brushing teeth

  • I wish I had better advice because we're in the same situation.  But I sit DS in my lap facing away from me so I can hold him down and brush them.

  • We have the same issues going on here. I find that if I brush my teeth at the same time, she will try to copy me. I figure that will suffice for now! If I try to push her, I do not want her to hate brushing her teeth.

  • It just depends on the day whether he does okay or not. He either fights the toothbrush going in his mouth at all or he just sits and chews on the thing, but I figure that's going to be better than nothing. A few weeks back someone suggested getting a stool for him to stand on so he can see in the mirror and feel more like a big boy and I still want to try that just haven't gotten around to buying the step stool yet. Might be worth a shot.

  • We have the step stool and he likes that but for the most part he just likes the taste of the toothpaste and chewing on the toothbrush.  I figure its better than nothing.  I always try to get his back teeth while he's still chewing on it.

  • DS has recently started doing his own teeth sometimes, which means he chews on the brush. To get to that point, we had to do it for him, though. DH would hold him and I would wedge the end of a toothbrush in between his teeth and then brush with another toothbrush. That way his mouth stays open.

This isn't the best, it's better when he's in the mood and chews on it himself or whatever.

Oh, sometimes he'll open his mouth if I say "AAAAAH" to him. Then he does it back.
