Please tell me I'm overreacting

My parents looked after DS1 and DS2 today while I ran some errands and DH worked. I gave them pumped milk and a banana for DS2's lunch (he's 8.5 months).

They sent me a picture of him eating meatlovers pizza.

I'm pissed. I'm really grateful they looked after him but I can't believe they would give him that! He's barely had any solid food beyond fruit/veg and cereal.

Would you say anything or be fine with it?

Re: Please tell me I'm overreacting

  • I'd be pissed.

I'd try to calmly explain that it's best to introduce solids carefully and add that new and complex foods can make the poor kid feel sick later.

    But I'd be pissed.

My DS is about the same age (born Nov 30), and we've introduced about the same types of foods.

I try to blame it all on the doctor and safety when I talk to my parents about it. "The doctor said he can only have single, 1-ingredient foods now. As in...peas, sweet potatoes, etc. I have a chart of foods that he has tried before, and please only give him food on this chart because he might have an allergic reaction if trying new foods (true story), and I don't want y'all to have to deal with any adverse food reactions."

The first time my dad pretty much said, "blah blah blah" and "pftttt," and it infuriated me, but now they're more respectful.

I don't think you're wrong to be upset, but when you talk to them about it, try to do it from a logical, rational point of view and not emotional. That's what worked for my parents.
  • Definitely say something. I will never understand why "old" people feel so freaking compelled to feed babies random shit.

  • That's odd. My ILs were freaking out when we gave DD bread at that age. They thought she should be on jarred purees like my DH was at that age.

Bottom line is they went against your instructions. I agree that talking calmly will help.

  • Are you sure they didn't just take the pic to be funny?

  • Uh, I would not be ok with that. I don't know why a lot of grandparents insist on feeding babies foods they aren't ready for or shouldn't be eating.

I'm sure he's okay now. If he's like DS, he'll be miserable with gas tonight.

  • Thanks everyone.

I talked to them. They still don't see much wrong with it ("it's just bread, tomatoes, cheese and meat!") but they agreed they shouldn't have done it without talking to me.

DS2 is fine. He's a tank and would eat anything if you let him, I just hope he doesn't get a reaction or tummy ache. It was pretty greasy pizza too....sigh...

I'm sure some of you can relate but my parents are the "we did it an survived" type. They mean well...

  • I can attest to the sentiment of old people wanting to feed babies random shit. It pisses me off. My fil stuck a fingerful of sugared sweet potatoes in my 2 month olds mouth then dipped it in beer and Intended to do the same thing again before I screeched like a crow and grabbed my baby from him.
  • I would say something. The crust, the pepperoni and other meats, even the cheese is all a choking hazard at that young. That would freak me the fuck out.

  • Oh and then my dad says to my mom "it's a good thing we didn't give him the Timbits (donuts, for all you 'Mericans) we were planning on giving him for dessert".

Grrr. I'm going to have to talk to them again because I was so focused on DS2's fucked up lunch that I didn't get to address they gave Ds1 blueberry cake for snack, pizza for lunch, ice cream and a donut for dessert. He was off the wAlls this afternoon.

My parents are wonderful people but they're both overweight so addressing any type of food related issues cause a lot of hurt feelings.

  • What is it with the older generation always pushing random foods on today's babies?

    I'd be upset, too.

Better hurt feelings than an obese or diabetic child. If they wont feed your kid what you leave, they don't get to keep your kid.

  • It wouldn't bother me since we were doing BLW and she had toppings off my pizza around that age. BUT since you told your parents what to do, and this is bothering you, I'd say something.

  • Yeah, my parents are a little like this, but they always ask me first. Their house is FULL of processed junk food. The problem is my mom doesn't see any difference between real food and crap. Like she actually asked me if she could give he baby pop tarts because they were "oatmeal" ones anyway. I'm not a fanatic, a pop tart once in a while is fine, but I am concerned she doesn't see the difference between a bowl of homemade oatmeal or a pop tart. Or the difference between organic unsweetened appplesauce and the lime green colored "pear" flavored applesauce she wanted to give him. ( which I really don't get why applesauce tastes like pears, but whatevs).

  • I would be more pawed that they didn't ask. However, Cade is 7 months and he eats regular food with us. He had Indian food already and loved it. A little pizza isn't v going to hurt. I would be posed they didn't ask.

You mean a piece of pizza won't give him diabetes and make him obese!?
    Nope! Cade loves my pizza!

  • My Mil is the worst with food. She's always Coming over with candy and ice cream.
It started with her trying to give him cereal as a neborn. Then pudding and ice cream and crap around 2-3 months. Now fast food, pop, chips, pop tarts, cookies cakes...you name it she wants to give it to him. She even took it as far as to try to give him some of her jello shot... and acted like it was NBD when I flipped out on her. Just ridiculous.
Old people are crazy. You should definitely say something.
