I'll be honest this is totally in an effort to make me feel better for the judgy looks and comment I got today with my belly and Starbucks chai latte. I'm also curious too as my habits this time around a bit more lax[sp?] than last time!

Re: Poll: How often do you drink caffeine this pregnancy?

  • Almost daily. I did during my first pregnancy also.

  • daily for me, M-F. I have a small cup each morning. I didn't start that until about 12 weeks, my own paranoia.

  • My OB said that caffeine is fine! She just asked me not to drink 7 mountain dews a day! Lol. I'm sure you are fine little momma!
  • I don't like soda but I use to have a cup of coffee every morning. Withdraw was terrible but I got through it. I have had two java chips from Starbucks and yesterday a parent brought bagels and Starbucks so I had a small cup of coffee. It was soooo good!!!!
  • My OB told me to keep it to the equivalent of about one cup of coffee per day. I don't drink coffee, just tea, so I figure a cup of tea a day is way below my maximum allowed. And I'm assuming that my maximum allowed is still below what doctors get concerned at.

  • Not a coffee person but I will have a mocha when I go to town.
  • I actually couldn't stand Starbucks for my first trimester so I didn't drink it then, but now, I go there almost daily. I get an iced caramel machiato. It's amazing and I could care less what people think. It's under 200mg of caffeine.

  • I've been trying to limit myself to a couple of times a week. This week I've been pretty good, but a rainy day definitely calls for Starbucks!
  • Not much, but I didn't really drink that much before pregnancy either. I do meet my dad at Starbucks 1 or 2 times a month and get an iced chai latte. yums! I also had a diet coke before Outside Lands music festival so I could stay up passed 9pm.

  • Probably closer to daily, but I was thinking about this as I washed my coffee cup this morning. I actually had decaf this morning.

Most OBs say caffeine is fine under 200mg a day.

    Starbucks Latte (12oz) - 75mg
    Red Bull/Monster (8oz) - 80mg
    Mt. Dew (12oz) - 50 mg
    Other soda (12oz) - 30-40mg

Starbucks will make your drink decaf or half-calf if you're worried about it. Or if someone says something, lie and say its decaf to avoid the conversation.

  • I said monthly because I do occasionally want a coke or something with caffeine. But I didn't cut it out because of pregnancy, I just have never really drank caffeine on a regular basis.  I tried it out when DS was 6 months and I was back in school but it didn't like how it made me feel, so I cut it back out again. If I was still drinking it I would cut back my daily amount but wouldn't cut it out completely.

First pregnancy I avoided whenever I could. (Didn't need coffee til after DS came :) )  This time I have pop (aka soda, coke, etc to others around the workd :) )  a little more often than last time. I've been trying to keep the coffee to a minimum though & trying to only have it when I really need it to get through the day or morning. I keep it to 1 cup then too.

  • I have been drinking unsweetened ice tea frankly I'm trying to cut out the fake sugar and save the real sugar for a brownie instead of a drink.
  • I didn't have any first tri (I weaned myself off when we started talking about trying), but once I hit second tri I started getting massive headaches if I didn't have an iced tea/tea in the mornings. I can't have much more than that though because I start getting the shakes.
  • When I was pregnant with DD, I didn't drink much caffeine but I would have a coke here and there.  When I was 34 weeks pregnant, I made the mistake of ordering a large (supersized) root beer thinking "no caffeine" and I ended up having an episode of tachycardia the next day (apparently Barq's "bite" is caffeine - about 90 mg in the serving I had).

My heart rate was 208 and they ended up having to administer a cardioversion in the ambulance less than half a mile from the ER because my heart rate was increasing but my blood pressure was lowering.

My OB said she had never had a patient have an episode of tachycardia in all of her years of practice.  All of the tests ran at the ER came back normal and the cardiologist couldn't find anything wrong with my heart. So they could only conclude that it was probably caffeine the night before.  So while it wasn't definitive and absolute, it has certainly made me abstain from caffeine completely this time around.

  • I'm one of the two that selected not a sip. I never really drank it before anyway. I'm sure I'll pick it up after she is here though!
  • My doctor said my morning coffee was fine and I could add a soda if I wanted to.  I don't drink soda, so I just have my coffee.

I'm confused with people being told NOT to drink caffeine at all.  Are your doctors telling you that?  From what I have read, it's on the list to be limited, not cut out completely.

  • With my first pregnancy I had soda maybe once or twice a week. This time I have coffee and soda. I probably have 1-2 cups of caffeine daily. Although I admit there are days here or there I have more and days here or there I don't have any.

  • Daily, with the qualifier that I drank/ate virtually nothing with caffeine during the first trimester because I was just averse to things that contained it, but I picked coffee and the occasional soda back up around week 12ish.

My doctor said no caffeine 1st trimester so I didn't have any.  She approved 1 small cup/day thereafter, and I promptly started drinking coffee again on 13 weeks and 3 days!

  • I generally like my coffee with whipped cream and some sort of flavor... ice cream if possible...you know, a milkshake.
Well, this baby likes coffee. Coffee makes me funny in the head, so I do decaf. But this morning I had half a cup of the real stuff. I've been so sleepy lately and feel myself go while driving. Scary! So I had just half a cup so the caffeine wouldn't make me batty. Haven't nodded off yet.

Perhaps baby is birthing a convert.....  Cause, you know, half a cup of caff, is SO hardcore.

  • Daily.  I drank it maybe once a week tops in the first tri, but since then I have a cup of coffee each morning.  I am way below 200mg.  I did have coffee once and then go to Olive Garden and kept ordering Iced Teas (not thinking about it) and I got really dizzy.  My body did not like that.  I get nasty looks and the occasional comment, but I am getting used to shitty comments theses days, it comes with the territory of being pregnant.  My OB says my caffeine consumption is nothing to worry about.  I will listen to the doc, not shithead people.

  • I've stopped my daily coffee but I switched to a hot cup of tea a day. I will also randomly have soda but usually I drink my non caffeine Dr Pepper or Coke.

  • Well thank goodness I asked and my kid won't be the only one with a hyperactive tail from all the caffeine! ;)

Seriously tho, my first pregnancy I just didn't really feel like I needed it, but this time around it has been much harder to avoid so I just quit fighting it and am sure to stay under the 200 mg a day.

  • One small cup of coffee a day, and usually also a half tea half lemonade per day.  I stay under 200mg, so I feel no guilt.
  • Not once since my bfp...I was the same with DS

  • I'm down to a mixture of decaf and 1/2 caf but it's still 1/2 a pot every day. It's one ritual I wont give up. If I'm feeling really tired that day I might also have a soda.

  • With DS I occasionally drank a small coffee once a day. But by 2nd trimester coffee kind of grossed me out so I stopped. This pregnancy caffiene has been my best friend. It keeps nausea at bay and gets rid of headaches. I drink one cup in the morning. I also may drink a Snapple Iced white tea in the afternoon which only has about 14 mg of caffiene. I end up well under the 200mg daily limit.

  • At least one cup of coffee every morning. Two if I'm really tired.

My OB has ok'ed it. I have a full-time job, pregnancy insomnia and a three-year old who still doesn't sleep through the night on a regular basis. Anyone who wants to judge me in line at Starbucks can f**k right off.

I totally got judged when I was at Starbucks yesterday ordering my tall vanilla iced coffee. Last pregnancy it would have bothered me. This pregnancy I will face punch anyone in my way between me and my coffee.

  • I stopped drinking soda a few years ago, and just have it once a week.

This is exactly what I get! The barista said 1 shot = 75 mg of caffeine so I get a tall and it is amazing. When pumpkin spice rolls around, no one can stop me!

I drink between 8-12 oz of half-caf coffee in the morning, and anything else during the day is decaf or non-caf (iced tea, soda, etc.) If I don't have the caffeine from the half-caf, I get a headache.
  • If I don't have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning I am likely to turn homicidal. So, for the sake of those around me, I drink a cup daily.

  • I drink sodas (normally Coca-Cola) or tea daily, and occasionally have chocolate with that as well, but no coffee for me and always I keep it down below the 200mg daily...unless I go on a chocolate splurge, perhaps, since I'm not entirely sure how much is in each thing of chocolate I eat, but I don't eat chocolate nearly as much as I used to, so pretty sure I'm keeping it down. I have never been able to stand the taste of coffee, but smelling it helps calm my stomach...something that started when I was pregnant with DD and is still going strong.

On a random note, I still remember one of my classmates freaking out when I was drinking a large cup of hot cocoa from the on-campus coffee shop, yelling that I was going to give my kid a cleft pallet...fun times there.
