Babies: 3 - 6 Months

nap question again

LO is 3.5 months. I can't rock him for long anymore because he's just too heavy. He really likes movement to go to sleep, but not even the swing is cutting it (and honestly, he's getting too  big for it as well). Is it too early to place baby in his crib and let him fall asleep himself? I have a video monitor so obviously I have my eye on him and I would go in there if he was crying etc. Currently he's just laying in the crib looking around and making noises to himself. I know he is tired because he just fell asleep on me so I took him up, swaddled him and placed him to his bed. I dont think he will fall asleep on his own, but im hoping that maybe one day it will work. quiet time alone in the crib is ok, right?

I used to be so good at this napping/sleeping thing but then he changed everything and it's made it so much more difficult. he really needs his sleep otherwise he is a cranky baby, like all other babies I'm sure. Why does he fight sleep so much??

Re: nap question again

  • My guy was really big on movement to fall asleep, too, and also a big baby! Around 3.5 months we started putting him in his crib awake and letting him try to fall asleep on his own. We stuck to a bedtime routine and a set bedtime based on his tired cues and I believe this really helped him know what to expect and that it was time to sleep. Now at 5 months old he falls asleep on his own every night (thumb sucking helps!) and it's been great so far. Good luck!!

  • Of course it's ok! As long as he's hanging out and not crying, it's fine to leave baby to try to fall asleep on his own.

Question: how can he be too heavy to rock? I can still rock my 4.5 year old and she's 40 pounds!
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

He's 18 lbs and won't let me rock him sitting down - must stand up. I'm also petite. Guess I'm not very strong
  • yes, it's ok. i hear you on too heavy, i had to stop rocking my son fairly early cause he was so heavy and i have neck/shoulder problems. my son will fuss sometimes and often as i'm about to go in b/c it gets louder he is asleep before i can get upstairs. there is a difference between fussing and crying, just keep that in mind. some babies fuss before they fall asleep.

my 4.5 mo falls asleep the quickest when i get him in the crib just as he's getting tired. once he starts to fuss before the crib it takes a little more holding and sometimes i have to go back in and comfort him before he goes down.

  • I also am confused about being too big to rock but seriously leave him if he's content. Sometimes babies need time to chill without stimulation.

What's confusing? He's 18 lbs, 25 inches, I'm small, my back has been sore since labor and I went up 6 cup sizes. My back is numb all day. Yes, I've talked to my dr about this. I'm out of shape and my abs are shot.
