Parenting after a Loss

At what point do I need to worry

It seems like this stomach bug that DS has just won't quit.  So Sunday night was diarrhea.  Monday was 5 diarrheas.  Tuesday was 2 diarrheas and 2 throw ups.  Yesterday NO THROW UP OR DIARRHEA!  YAY!  I was like woohoo, we are out of the woods!  He still hasn't had any appetite but at least what little he was eating was staying in.  Well my nanny just texted that he had a HUGE EXPLOSIVE MASSIVE diarrhea this morning, probably clearing out all the liquids and food we were able to get in there yesterday.  Yesterday all he ate were some Cheerios, toast, applesauce and Pirate's booty (he won't eat the rice or bananas we've offered).  This morning all he had was Pedialyte and Cheerios before I left for work.  His diet could not get much blander (except maybe the Pirate's booty, but I just wanted him to eat something and he was turning up his nose at Cheerios, toast and applesauce since that's been his diet for 3 days).  He's still having at least 5 wet diapers a day so dehydration does not seem to be a problem.

Is it normal for a stomach bug to last this long??  At what point do I insist on taking him to the doctor even though I've talked to them 3 times and they've stressed that if he's having wet diapers I do not need to worry about this?  I am so frustrated and I just feel awful for him.  :(

Re: At what point do I need to worry

  • With DD, I would say that it was really bad for maybe 3 days (not eating, only taking pedialyte by syringe, sleeping 20 out of 24hrs, etc) and another 3-4 days until it completely cleared her system.

The multiple diarrhea/vomiting was the same. Really bad for about 24-48 hours, then slowly tapered off to just diarrhea, then squishy poops.

We did the same thing with the pedi, would call, he said she was fine, give it a few days, call again, he'd say she was on the mend. If he is taking some food, perking up a bit, no fevers, etc, then I would say to give it time.

However, if your mommy instincts are telling you to call and bring him in, then do it. It won't hurt. Sorry this has been such an ordeal for you and DS.

First, it doesn't hurt to call the nurse and ask, if for nothing other than to ease your worries.  I like to ask ours for the threshold for when I need to bring him in ASAP and/or take him to the ER.  That helps me to break down what I'm seeing and worrying about and figure out if I'm being rational about it or not.

Second, when we had the pukes and diarrhea earlier this year, it took a while.  He had diarrhea for over a week.  He was about 18m then.  His poops didn't fully get back to normal until almost two weeks in.  It sucked.  I just kept him on bland food and kept him off of milk until he'd stopped puking for a few days.  Milk made the puking worse.  I also made sure to grease his bottom well at every change to prevent diaper rash.

I also kept an eye on him.  He was never very lethargic, but my kid also doesn't slow down normally.  Had he been truly lethargic or if he was not having wet diapers, I would have taken him in immediately.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon!

  • Thanks ladies!  I did call the nurse and she is having us bring him in this afternoon.  It sounds like this may be pretty run of the mill based on what you all have experienced.  I know it's "just" diarrhea but it just worries me when he's eating next to nothing, drinking about half of what he usually does, and then a lot more is coming out and it's all liquid.  May just need to run its course but dehydration is a scary thing you don't want to mess with, you know?

  • DD had a tummy bug that came and went for the full 7-10 days. I'd think it was gone and then it'd come back after a day or two.
Have you tried bananas and yogurt? Those can be helpful with diarrhea too.
