I think way too many people go gluten free to be hip now. I know some people have celiac disease and I don't judge them, but I know a number of gluten free people without celiac disease. Hipsters!

Along these same lines, I can't stand people who have all these "allergies" that haven't been confirmed by a medical professional. My H's aunt and uncle and their adult children are any combination of :

    Vegan
    Gluten Free
    Dairy free
    Soy free
Intolerant of food with high acid
    Allergic to seafood
    Watching nut and seed intake
Only meat they eat is bison

WTF are we supposed to eat when we get together? I watched H's aunt eat a plate of food with a small scoop of bison meat, 5-7 kidney beans, iceberg lettuce, and a sprinkling of raw almonds. Where the fuck is the joy in that?! I remember piling up my plate with corn chips, meat, salsa, cheese, sour cream and mm-ed audibly the whole time while shoving it down my gullet.

I think the biggest confirmation of an allergy or intolerance is how the person reacts to eating the food, not medical testing.

    Seriously!
My FIL has celiac disease and he is so low key about it. If it has gluten in it, he won't eat it and he doesn't make a big deal about it. I am more than happy to go out of my way to cater to his dietary restrictions.
Now DH's cousin is a different story. She claims her kids have a lot of allergies and restrictions but they haven't ever had a reaction or a diagnosis. She's just straight up crazy.

I agree with @Baker_Bride, I'm not a dog or cat person and I do NOT appreciate being told to "like" an animal. I am really allergic to cats so I do not want one rubbing against my legs or jumping in my lap. I don't think people who have animals are weirdos or anything, we just won't ever have pets.

@AggieDaner I saw Beck when he toured with the Flaming Lips in Fall of 2002. It was INCREDIBLE!!!!

Oh I totally understand. But I think in this case, the whole family has gone down a food elimination rabbit hole. They stop eating one thing, convince themselves they feel better, then they start feeling crappy again, because they aren't getting whatever nutrients they need. Then they eliminate something else, or add something back in. It's silly, and all done on their own or with Dr. Google.
My sister in law is crazy controlling about food. One of her kids had the most minimal reaction to peanuts on an allergy test so now none of her kids can have any nuts. Every time I hear her talk with huge drama about her kids deathly peanut allergy like her kid will die if breathed on with peanut breath, it's all I can do not to roll my eyes.

But peanut allergies are no joke. A reaction to peanuts, even if small, can be concerning, because reactions can get more severe with each exposure. If her other kids aren't old enough to take necessary precautions, I can see why a whole family might choose to go peanut free.

@Baker_Bride :  I was just adding to, not arguing :)  My friend is in the vast minority.  I think it's crap when anyone judges how someone safely delivers the baby.  I could NOT have done a home birth.  HELL no!  It's not my thing.  I don't judge those who do.

I guess my UO may be that the "autism diet" is crap.  Sure, it helps kids... It helps kids who actually possess the allergy/intolerance to the food - regardless of whether they have autism or not.  The next person who tells me DSS would be SO much better off on the "special diet" is going to get an item full of gluten, casein, dyes, and other shit shoved up their pretentious ass.  That person may be his bio-mom...  I would enjoy it.
DSS's mom has him on a gluten/casein free diet. Can I just say...he seems worse now than before? I think it's pointless for him.
I've seen that happen!  I've seen kids go into rages because their favorite foods were taken away in hopes of "curing" the autism.  Good luck, parent.  Good luck.

We had DSS on "the diet" for a few months and it made zero difference.  All it did was depress him because he couldn't have his favorite foods.  When you already have a picky eater, it's just not worth it when there is no allergy or intolerance.  He's also underweight, already, so taking away what he WILL eat is nonsense.

  • I think zoos are horrible.  We took DD to one on Sunday and it broke my damn heart.  This one gorilla just locked eyes with me and it just looked bored as fuck...and sad.  Then there were eagles netted into a small, SMALL area, there was a seal that had one loop to swim around over and over and over again, and there was a wolf all by himself laying under a tree in a small area.

I get that they were born into captivity so they don't know better, but JFC, talk about depressing.  I did not have a good time.
    Me. Too.

H is always suggesting taking Howell to the zoo and I hate it. It's also a stupid idea because then all he does is ride in the Ergo or stroller broken up by points where we let him out to look at an animal. And that's usually uninteresting because of how far away it is. He always loses his shit (like my reference to your other UO?) by the time we leave because he's at the same time bored and overstimulated. I also don't look forward to the day the questions about why we even have zoos start.

I'll take a children's museum or children's area in a museum any day. Actually, if anyone ever comes to DC, the Building Museum has an AMAZING children's area. They have one hour sessions and they are $3 but you only pay for yourself. It's nice because tourists don't realize how awesome it is and it's a little away from the Mall so it's rarely crowded. It's also small enough that LOs don't get overstimulated or lost in the shuffle. It's also right off the train so it's fastly becoming our new favorite hang out.
What! The zoo in DC is awesome! It's like a huge park and it's free!!!

I once went to a small animal park in Panama City, FL and at first I was really reluctant because I was sure the animals were being mistreated. Turned our it was more of an animal haven. All the animals were rescues from zoos or from people who had tried to keep them as pets. The giraffe had a growth so the zoo didn't want him, I guess. They even had a placard explaining that the growth was benign so there was no reason to remove it.

It was a pretty cool place.

Do you feel the same with licking ice cream off of a cone?
  • You would not believe the "allergies" I have to deal with at work. It's ridiculous. You can tell when someone has a real allergy, when they are on a fad diet, and when they're just bullshitting.

My UO was that going to be along the lines of using SPF, but it looks like that was covered. I don't understand why people don't use sunblock, and are okay with burning. I got sunburnt the other day for the first time(that's what happens when you run around a water park for 7 hours intoxicated.), and I hate this!

I always get a bowl mainly because of the drippy mess factor and I guess that would also prevent this problem. But yes, seeing someone chase ice cream with their tongue is pretty gross.

It seems like this whole allergy thing has got you in a tizzy today, amiate. I don't know your allergy situation in your family, but I'm just telling you, in my experience, people who have real allergies or intolerances don't make it all about them. They just refuse whatever it is they can't eat and move on. There are the people that Tula is talking about and also the people in H's family who list off all the things they can't eat or won't eat and make it very difficult for everyone around them.
Right. Like @MoFree's relative who was being a total douchecanoe about her LO's allergy and Lila's restaurant birthday party.

Having a severe allergy absolutely sucks and I'm sure it is really difficult to manage at times. That still doesn't give you license to make everything about the allergy all the time at the expense of other people's meal/event. Ask for accommodations politely wherever possible, but realize that in some situations accommodation may not be possibly, and respectfully decline those situations.
Seriously...that was ridiculous.  I couldn't believe they pitched a fit like they did.

Also, I've been managing a severe peanut allergy for over 20 years, it's not that big of a deal anymore. I judge the crap out of adults who make big deals about their allergies, and even more so their "sensitivies".

  • Hey @amaite.. thanks for taking a shot at me. Anyway, someone saying "I'm allergic to caesar dressing, can I have ranch?" Is usually my first indication someone does NOT have an allergy. They can't tell me what they're allergic to. Just caesar. Also, saying "I'm allergic to dairy so I can't have cheese on my sandwich, but I can have the sauce that has dairy, " is another one. If you want your food made special, just say so. It isn't a problem.

People with allergies are very informed on what their allergies are. They take is very seriously, as do I. I know the severity of allergies, and I'm glad I work for a company that can accomad

  • I thought lobsters were the cockroach of the sea?
That being said, whether shrimp or lobster- I love them both, nom nom nom.  I could eat sea food everyday.
I miss living in Florida and having crab legs in buffet lines.
  • Cockroaches are insects and lobsters and shrimp are crustaceans. Not the same. Arachnids are also arthopods. Anyone want a tarantula for dinner? I actually stopped this kid from eating a spider. Rather she informed me she was mad at me for rescuing it because she was saving it for a snack.

So what are centipedes? They aren't insects, crustaceans or Arachnids.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I'm just not sure why some people seem to think they are more of an expert on someone else's stated allergies than the person himself. Yes, some people lie, but many people don't, and because there can be severe consequences, I think one needs to err on the side of caution and assume there really is an allergy if someone says they have one. I don't see why it's such a problem if someone needs to eat differently than you. Sharona, you said you ate whatever it was anyway, so why do care if the people who claimed to have allergies or sensitivities just had bison and raisins? It doesn't seem like it stopped you from enjoying your meal. And Tula, doesn't a restaurant usually try to cater to their customers likes anyway? What's the difference between making an accommodation for someone with a real allergy vs. someone you suspect is faking it? Yes, people who fake it can make it harder for people with real allergies, but that's because of all the people out there who then assume people are lying. You just prepare their meal assuming there is an allergy, because maybe there is one. And if they say something like they are allergic to Caesar and not ranch, I would hope you ask what the actual allergy is so you can make sure it's not in the ranch, although, yes, I agree with you, people normally are more specific in stating their allergies.

And I'm not sure how you would expect someone with an allergy to eat at a restaurant or family function without making their allergies known. They need to know what's in the food, and in severe cases, need the food prepared in a manner to avoid cross contamination. If that's not possible, they don't eat it, but unless a conversation about the allergy takes place, they won't know.

Mofree's situation was completely different than the things tula and sharona brought up. That person was expecting the whole party to be changed. That's obviously unreasonable. If someone can't go in a place because their allergy is so severe, then they don't go, but if they can be somewhere with reasonable cooking accommodations or by bringing their own food, they shouldn't be judged by the cooks, servers, or family members who think they are lying, which mofree was not doing. Again, I know some people do lie, and that's not cool, but none of us are in the position to make the call as to whether or not someone is lying. And, if they have a sensitivity instead of an allergy, should they really have to have something like diarrhea for several days because it's not a true allergy so they should eat it anyway?

I'm guessing that if any of your lo's had a life threatening food allergy, you would make it known to family members and restaurant servers and would remind them and double check on things. Even if they just had a sensitivity, you would probably take precautions.

And jayandemm, good for you that you've managed your peanut allergy. Thats fine if you think I'm being disagreeable, but I just don't get why people feel the need to make a big deal about what someone else is eating and whether or not they really have allergies if theyhave said that they do.

Tula, that is the reason I love Disney dining! The chefs are so willing to accommodate different needs. I have a gluten sensitivity and pay special attention while traveling so I don't get a headache and miss out on fun stuff. I love all the GF options at Disney: you have things I don't even make at home cause they are hard to find.

FWIW, DH has a serious nut allergy. He rarely mentions it in restaurants because he hates making a big deal. He just orders safe items and asks questions if necessary. Our friends and family know and work around it. Like, at Thanksgiving, my mom will point out which bread is cranberry walnut and which is okay for him to eat. Also, he just avoids baked goods in general.

Anyway, I share the opinion of most of you that people should neither fake allergies to foods that they just don't like, nor make such a big deal of their allergies that it ruins others enjoyment of parties or events (i.e. Mo's ridiculous family.)

Chances are that we've eaten there! We lived in Florida for six years and had annual passes. I made a point of getting to all the Disney restaurants with excellent GF menus. The best GF pancakes I've ever had were at The Wave in the Contemporary resort.

Well...there are a lot of things that it's VERY unlikely someone has actual allergic reaction to. If someone says "I'm allergic to apples" you can kind of assume they don't like them rather than they will suffer immediate Anaphylaxis if they eat it.

I still wouldn't serve it to them, naturally, but yeah. I'd be assuming they aren't fans vs. are actually allergic.

I actually know someone who is allergic to apples. Breaks out in hives. I had to scrub my hands before making his food.
