Where do your pets sleep?

Just curious as to where your pets sleep at night, dogs specifically. Our dog has a bed on all 3 floors of our house and rotates between them during the day depending on where the rest of the family is, he also has a crate. At night though he likes to exclusively sleep in our room. The issue is he is an extremely loud sleeper and it's really bothering DH who has new early morning work hours. He barks, kicks, scratches, growls all in his sleep. It's quite amusing actually, but it does get annoying after a while. I don't mind because I'm usually awake anyway with this insomnia, but he keeps waking DH up and he's concerned that it will keep the baby up as well. He suggested we kick him out of our room at night. He's got 3 other places he could go sleep.

Just wondering what the norm is for the rest of the pet owners out there. Does your dog sleep in your room? In your bed? The crate?

Re: Where do your pets sleep?

  • Our dog has been crated at bed time since he was a puppy. For him it is all about routine. We've been doing this for over 2 years and half the time he'll wait for us at the top of the stairs until we're ready to take him down and tuck him in for the night.

  • Our dogs have their beds in our room. One in the corner (the smaller one will sometimes be allowed in the bed) and the German shepherd in the floor at the end of the bed (always in the floor)

I wish we had started this since when we first got him. He was used to sleeping in our bed, but after I got pregnant we had to break him of that habit. Now I just hate to kick him out of our room too. I don't want him to feel punished, but it's really bothering DH who has to go to sleep much earlier now.

I have two dogs. A pit and a shih tzu. Sam, the shih tzu, will be living the rest of his days with my mom. He needs special care and I can't accommodate him properly after the baby is born. :(( Fiona, has a bad habit of sleeping in bed with my husband. I've been trying to work on her sleeping in her own bed at night but he has created a monster. I love her cuddle bug personality but it scares me that she will try and cuddle the baby. We might try having Fiona sleep in a different room.

  • Our dog is crate trained and she only ever sleeps in her crate (she loves it; it's her happy place). She used to be in the guest bedroom away from our two cats, but we have transitioned her crate to the living room now in preparation for the guest room becoming LOs nursery, so all the mongrels are together. It seems to be working okay so far. None of them are allowed in our bedroom (my DH is an incredibly light sleeper). Good luck figuring it out!
  • Mr. Dog sleeps on the first floor with Miss Kitty. His bed and food/water are on that floor. He used to sleep in our bedroom but DD gets up to pee at night and I don't want her to accidentally step on him because he would freak out! So it's safer if he is gated downstairs. Is it sad that of the 3 gates we use in our house, 2 of them are for the pets??

  • We have 3 cats. They all sleep on the bed with us usually. It gets a little crowded, but oh well! We are not sure if we are going to kick them out once the baby arrives.

  • My cat sleeps wherever she wants except our bedroom. Once LO starts sleeping in his room, that room will be off limits too.

  • I'm so glad you asked this because my DH and I have been arguing over this same thing. We have two dogs and both sleep in their crates in our room. I would say most nights they are relatively quiet but some nights they will scratch or lick themselves or make other annoying noises and it drives DH crazy (and I admit it gets on my nerves at times, too). Of course DH is using the baby as the perfect excuse to move their crates in the living room because he doesn't want them to wake up LO but I just can't handle them not sleeping in the same room as us. Not to mention, why would we want two ugly crates sitting in our living room?? It's already cluttered enough as it is with the swing, bouncer, etc. Maybe I will be on his side once LO gets here but for now, I'm standing firm on keeping them in our room and hoping that LO won't be bothered by them.

  • Our dog sleeps on her bed in our room.  She also snores and has little doggy dreams (nightmares?) in which she whimpers, kicks, etc.  I am a light sleeper, so I usually wake her up when she's in the middle of a dream and then she'll just fall back asleep. Maybe just try to verbally wake your dog up, and if that works, great.  If not maybe start the transition to another room.  Good luck!
  • At night my dog (a pug) sleeps in a crate in our room- we don't close the crate, he just goes in there because no matter where he is he will immediately lay on the most cushiony thing he can find, lol. He used to cuddle in the bed with me but it bothers my husband's eyes so we put a stop to that. I feel your pain though because pugs are loud snoring dogs! We're just used to it at this point so it rarely wakes us up.
  • Our dog Stella sleeps in bed with us but she's only about 17lbs, pug/min pin mix. I don't think I would have the heart to kick her out of bed and even if I did, my fiancé would bring her right back up (she's too short to get in our captain's bed on her own) and make sure she got tucked in under her blanket... yeah, she's spoiled. But she normally sleeps through the night, snores a little, but generally isn't wiggly or noisy once she is under her blanket so I don't think it's a problem. She sleeps near our feet unless it's storming and then we have to snuggle her between us.

I guarantee once LO is here, she will get up with us when we go to LO's room (right across the hall) and I would rather have her there with us than have her barking and freaking out from another room when she hears us up and about. Noises make her bark but she has never barked about babies/kids unless she was playing with them. I'm curious to see how she reacts when it is at our home though.

I guess the only thing I would worry about with putting your dog in another room would be if your dog is like mine and barks when they can't see what's going on but can hear it. For me, it would be more of a hassle to calm her down when she doesn't know what's going on than it would be for her to just be right there.

  • Our dog sleeps in bed with us, she actually sleeps between us under the covers (super spoiled, and I 100% blame DH, he started that when she was a puppy). We aren't planning on changing that once LO comes. We did break her of kicking when she wants room in the middle of the night, so now she'll huff and move to the foot of the bed, or the bench we have at the foot of the bed (which I bought hoping she would prefer over the crowded bed.

  • Our cat has beds in various places in the house.  Sometimes we let him sleep on his cat bed which is in our room, but now that we set up the bassinet we've evicted him at night.  I don't think he minds all that much, the cat beds in other rooms seem to suit him just fine and I'd rather just deal with the baby in the room for a while.

Once we shift to the baby sleeping in his crib at night we may let the cat get back into the cat bed in our room.

  • I have a small pup that sleeps in bed with us, and my German shepherd sleeps in her own bed in our room. Sometimes the German shepherd will sneak up onto the bed in the middle of the night. I have no idea how to break her of this because she knows she is breaking the rules, but she wants to snuggle so bad! She is only a year old so she can be very conniving. Anyway, I said both dogs would be out of our bed before LO gets here, but here I am 9 months later with little to no progress. Lol

  • Our cocker spaniel (17lbs) sleeps on our bed most of the time.  She moves to the floor occasionally.  The cat sleeps on my head or in the chair next to my bed.  :)  Neither one was an issue when my son was born so Im not really that concerned.  Our dog also snores and she never woke up DS.  Eveyone warned me about the cat trying to sleep in the co-sleeper or crib....he never did.  He showed zero interest in DS until he was more then a year old and could actually pet him.  :)  Guess there was nothing in it for him prior to that  :)

  • My dog has 2 beds -- one in the living room and one in our bedroom, and her crate. She sleeps on her bed in our room at night and only goes in her crate when we're gone from the house.

She never gets on any of the furniture, ever. That was something she learned from the get-go.

  • Our two Pomeranians sleep in their crates in our bedroom. Every now and then DH let's them sleep in the bed with us, but it's very rare, because they love to snuggle so they get right under us and make sleeping difficult. We close their crates, because they are also nosey and would likely find something to get into or start playing loudly in the middle of the night. I know when LO gets here they would also have to get up every time she does and come check things out. They are pretty well behaved, I think their sleeping situation will be ok when she gets here. I know they will get woken up right along with DH and I, but they nap all day anyway, so it will be ok :).

  • Our two puggles share a crate made for a big dog.  We crate them each night and every time we leave the house even though they are 7 and 8.  One of them has some major seizure issues, so keeping things "normal" for her is one of the best things we can do to prevent seizures.

  • We have two small dogs- a dachshund/yorkie who is about 8 lbs. (2 years old) and a yorkie poo who is about 18 lbs. and is still a pup- he'll be a  year old in November.

We used to let them sleep in our room- the puppy on the floor in a bed (with a potty pad next to him at first), the older little one in bed with us. We realized this was probably a bad idea with a LO on the way, so we transitioned them to their beds in the kitchen at night for now. I feel kind of bad about this, but they've adjusted well. Eventually, we'll let them sleep in our room again (likley on the floor) or have more of the run of part of the house, but for now, the puppy still occasionally has accidents inside (maybe like once a month or so) so I like to keep him on the tile.

  • We didn't get our dog until June...she's about a year old and we adopted her. So, we knew we were preparing for baby and have established a "bedtime" routine of kenneling her when we go to bed. Her crate is in our living room. She isn't allowed on our bed and doesn't sleep for the night anywhere else. Good luck!

  • Our dogs sleep in their own beds in our room. They are also loud sleepers but they are spoiled and will whine if they don't get to sleep in our room. It took us a very long time to get them out of the habit of sleeping in our bed.

I have a Boston terrier and a French Bulldog. Both of them have crates in our bedroom and have slept in their crates from the day we brought them home. I will confess that I let both dogs sleep in bed with me every time H has to work late or over night. I like the company. My Boston prefers to be in bed with us and is over his crate (he's not crated when we are home anymore) but will listen to us when we tell him to. My Frenchie is still a puppy and is always crated when we aren't home and he loves his crate. There have been several times where he will get out of bed and go snuggle in his crate. We sometimes have to force him out by lifting the back part of the crate.

I don't think it is too late to crate train your dog. The crate is a good place for them. It is their space, and if that is what you choose to do your dog will get use to it.

Thanks ladies. It seems like the answers vary a lot. I think I will probably give into DH on this one and see how he handles sleeping somewhere else in the house for a night or two. He almost never barks unless someone rings the doorbell, so I'm not worried about him barking or scratching at the door or anything. He's just very sensitive and he always looks so sad when we leave him, I'm afraid he'll feel like we're punishing him for something if we kick him out. I'm just tired of listening to DH complain about the dog keeping him up half the night and I'd much rather try this now than wait for baby to get here. Too many changes on the poor pup all at once.

  • Rem is crate trained but we replaced it with a bed this week because he outgrew it. He sleeps anywhere during the day but at night he sleeps on his bed right next to our bed.
  • Our dog sleeps in our bed. Bad habit, I know. I have been pushing to get her to sleep in the family room or at least on the floor in her own bed but she's been sleeping with me for four years and its a tough habit to break. I am sure I will be regretting it when the baby comes in a few weeks.

We're moving to a new home next week and I keep telling DH that's the time to give her a new place to sleep but he is a big mush and thinks she'd be too upset in the new house already to also be sleeping downstairs without us. With a baby in the bassinet next to my bed tho I think its going to be a must!

  • I would be of no help. My two spoiled dachshunds are almost 10 and have always slept in the bed. Luckily, they're small and make little to no noise. They sleep sounder than me!

  • The cocker spaniel is 14 and moved herself to the floor instead of in the bed with us last year. She doesn't like trying to jump up on the bed anymore. We got her a doggie bed that stays at the end of our bed. During the day if no one is here she goes in her crate.

The cat goes in the laundry room at night and also has her own bed in there. She used to sleep with us, but her habit of getting up and wanting me to get up at 3am got her moved out of our room a couple years ago. Her cat box, food, and water are all in there so it's like she has her own room.

  • We have an area of our house that we refer to as doggy jail (only because it looks more like a jail cell than an actual place we put them to punish them). It's the pantry area between our living room and our kitchen, where we put up a kennel gate that allows for easy passage between the two rooms. We have two larger dogs who like to snuggle together at night, so we have them in there instead of in crates. They have a blanket laid out, their doggie bowls, and a doggie door so they can go in and out as they please. I'm actually allergic to anything cute and fluffy, so they've never slept with us.
  • We got our dog as an adult, and with a history of mistreatment she was not amenable to crate training.  At all.  As such, she has dog beds upstairs/downstairs and an extra one in our bedroom.  She is not permitted on the bed.
The cat sleeps wherever the hell she wants.

  • We have 3 cats. About a year ago we decided to keep them out of the bedrooms (upstairs). Best decision ever. They sleep anywhere downstairs, couch, tables, garage, kitty tower, etc. my bedrooms don't need as much cleaning now and I don't miss the hair balls, spit ups, and kitty litter bits on my bed. :)
  • Our dogs used to sleep on their beds on the floor of our room. We have a mastiff, so we have an extremely loud snoring sleeper as well. We decided a couple months ago it wouldn't work with the baby moving in, so we exiled them to their own bedroom next door with a baby gate at the entrance...it took them a couple days to get used to it, but they seem to have adjusted fine :)

There's no way I'd kick him out of the bed at this point, but the crib is in my bedroom so I will have to be open to adjusting sleeping arrangements if he disturbs the baby.
