Who has had thrush?

I'm not sure if I have it. I was on antibiotics last week for a pp UTI.

I have had bad latch on pain since DS was born and its still there (he's 2.5 weeks). My nipples are also bruised but I'm not sure if its from my pump or LO. We're really working in our latch... But struggle because my nipples seem really large for his mouth. The pain diminishes substantially after about a minute of nursing, but it still vaguely there, especially on the left side. I don't see any cracks but they are pink (and bruised lol). I'm not sure if this is just from all the latching and re latching and just the normal adjustment of being BFing, or if its due to thrush. I don't see any flakes or white patches but my nipples are definitely burning/itching a bit in between feedings but nothing unbearable and maybe its just sensitivity? LO doesn't have any white patches on his cheeks/lips etc, and doesn't seem in pain or uncomfortable during feedings, so I'm thinking its probably not thrush?? I have the all purpose nipple ointment I've been using, so maybe that will help.

Has anyone had thrush before? What was your experience like? Dies it sound like I should maybe call the doctor?

Also, sorry to post 2 questions in one thread, but it seems like its a struggle for LO to keep a deep latch. He starts out that way but within minutes falls back on it and the latch us shallow again, unless I hold my boob and make sure its kind of pushed in his mouth. It's getting pretty frustrating and I'm nit sure if this is just because I'm large breasted or because my nipples are large or what? The nurses said my latch looks great from the outside but when I push some of my boob back, his mouth isn't open nearly as wide as it looks to be. Maybe there is a better position for this problem? We do football or cross cradle hold.

Thanks for any help!!

Re: Who has had thrush?

  • Hopefully it's not thrush. I was worried that I did a few weeks ago d/t he same reasons as you. BFing had been pretty pain free, then started being painful during latching on on my left breast. I did some research and watched some videos and it just seemed like se wasn't getting a deep enough latch. I fixed it and have been pain free ever since.

When she latches on on that side, I Do cross cradle hold and tip her head back slightly so that her chin is pressed into my breast and nose is up. Then I point my nipple towards her nose and pull her head towards it when she opens wide enough. I also make sure that it's pointed towards the roof of her mouth when she takes the nipple in. This has worked well for us. :)

  • I'm not sure if what you are describing is exactly thrush, usually the baby may have white spots inside thier mouth, and also experience diaper rash. You could have mild thrush, maybe taking probiotics/ eating yogurt to help balance out your natural flora will help. It does sound like your nips are damaged if you are seeing bruising though, most likely from your difficulty in getting a deep latch. Ibuprofen and ice helped me the most to deal with the pain. I have big boobs too and I had to hold my boob for the duration of the breastfeeding session when my LO's were that young. Once they grow and become stronger with there latching/nursing I didn't have to support/sandwich my boob so much, probably around 4-6 weeks old. Hope that helps.

  • My LC gave me this link. Maybe do the grapefruit seed extract and see if that helps. Ive been really struggling with thrush and its horrible if you get it full blown.
    sorry if not clicky. https://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-CP
  • Thank you for the info, ladies.

Ebille, I took some ibuprofen and it really helped with the next feeding. It's good to know its normal to have to support your boob at first, when large chested. I will continue to dovtgatcand hope that will help with the latch!

    Thanks again everyone!
  • I am currently fighting thrush. I have another cream I am trying to get rid of it.  My DD is on nystatin and it appears her white patches are gone.  The big indicator for me besides the burning was very pink nipples.  And they burned all the time, in the shower, if anything touched them and during feedings (the whole time).

I also feel like DD has a very strong suck which does not help.

I tried olive oil after feedings, which seemed to help. I also read vinegar and water helps.

I hope you don't have thrush...it is not fun.  Good luck!!
