This same thing actually just happened last night to one of the women in my April '11 group with her Foscam. She heard some guy saying, "wake up, kid!" to her son. I was planning to get the same one soon, and now I'm freaked out.
You can prevent it from happening....a good friend of mine is a IT supervisor where I work and she told me how to stop it but didn't understand a word....I just told her I'd have a bottle of wine waiting for her when she comes to do whatever to the monitor
I've always been weird about having a video monitor for the baby. I just don't see why a sound only monitor isn't good enough. But we were recently broken into and have since put cameras around and in the house. I have tossed the idea around with DH whether or not to put one in the nursery. I just think it would be neat for him to be able to check in on nap times while he's at the station and I'm home. Our cameras are not on an open frequency and are locked under a passcode but even saying that I don't really know what that means. I guess there's always FaceTime. Thanks for the heads up.
Our baby bargains book mentions the possibility of this happening, mostly on accident. It's one if the "cons" for video monitoring. It's pretty scary that people would use it intentionally to be a creeper.
It doesn't even have to be hacked to have someone see. SIL had the same video monitor as a person down the street from her. Apparently, the lady kept the moniter on at all times. One day, SIL was making dinner and glanced at the monitor. Instead of seing her LO, she saw the neighbor lady completely undressing !

Holy crap! That would scare me, especially because I would assume it was the voice of a ghost lol. We wanted a video monitor but ended up with an audio-only and now I'm kind of glad!
And I could be wrong and am not sure if its just the style I have she was talking about or all of them but the range is 500something feet so that means so freakshow is that close by....Ugh makes me sick
This is why you can buy one that wont do this. Besides the scary perv aspect they can run interference with your smart TV's, computers etc. so we made sure to look for one that ran on its own frequency and wont interfere with other electronics OR other neighbors monitors. Im not where near an IT person so I dont really understand it but I researched which ones to buy that had this functionality.
I love my video monitor and believe it's a LOT better than having an audio monitor (which we also own), but this is very disconcerting! Does anyone know about the Summer Infant brand and whether it's hackable?
btw, if you are wondering video vs. audio, video is good for
a) is your kid actually crying and awake, or just wimpering in his/her sleep? (do you need to go in and feed him/her?) If you go in to check, s/he WILL be awake, so it's nice to have a spy.
b) cry it out -- you can turn off the sound, but then check visually periodically for problems such as vomiting (DS never vomited from crying, but I've heard that happens a lot, and you need to deal with that right away.
c) climbing out of the crib
d) once LO has a bed, climbing out of bed, playing with toys, general disobedience.
e) stripping, poop emergencies once the kid is older. DS tends to disrobe if he poops. This happened 1-2 times pre-monitor and was a FCKING DISASTER. Now that we have a monitor we can see it before there is a mess.
I'm almost positive if its a digital camera, it cant be hacked unless the person with the other monitor is able to get in your house and sync it with your camera.
If it is a wireless camera it also has something to do with the security you have on your internet connection. If you have secure passwords to access your home internet, it shouldn't be a problem.
Can I just remind everyone to check the encryption on their SSID passwords (wifi passwords) and make sure they're not ancient WEP encryptions? This guy on the news probably had a WEP password, which just about anyone can crack. If you're not sure what you have, call your Internet Service Provider and ask them how to check. Then if you have WEP, ask them how to change to WPA/WPA2 Personal.
Re: Baby Monitor Hacked article - SCARY
Thanks for the heads up.
