Anyone thinking of piercing ears?

This may sound crazy, but is anyone thinking of piercing their LO's ears? My mom got mine pierced when i was 3 months old... Obviously, that time period has cone and gone for us. I know I want to get them pierced, I'm just not sure when...

Re: Anyone thinking of piercing ears?

  • I would if I had a girl. If my son wants a pierced ear when he is older and able to voice his opinion, then I will let him.. my husband had one pierced ear when he was like 1 or something, my brother had one when he was 3, so I come from a place where it isn't weird for a boy to have pierced ears.

Playing a little devil's advocate here -- So if you had a girl, she wouldn't have a choice, but your son does have a choice?

If it was more socially acceptable to have a baby boy's ears pierced I would do my son's. Where I live at it is not.

ETA: Actually where I live it is not right to pierce any age boy. So I would only give him the choice because he would have to be ready for comments about it... so he would have to be aware about that.

  • I can't decide! My mom got mine pierced when I was a baby and never felt disappointed that I didn't get to decide for myself to get them done. I hate wearing earrings and never really have but I'm not upset that they are pierced. To me it seems a little easier to take care of when they are little and can't mess with them, but at the same time I feel terrible putting her through the pain of it. So at this point I'm still undecided, I guess I need to decide soon!
  • I pierced my DD ears when she turned 3 months. I got mine when I was less than 2 months to us it is a culture thing. But it is really not that bad actually someone on here told me that pedi offices pierced ears,I researched and sure enough I found one. Took DD $40 dollars and all done :). It is really not as bad as you think she cried literally 5 min,I also cried lol I followed instruction and cleaned the area did not wait the 6 weeks to change the earring it healed soon so,I put in the one's I really wanted her to wear 3 weeks later. You can see her piercing in the picture!

Same here. I don't need one more thing I worry about at this stage!

  • I will probably this weekend! Cant wait  :D
  • Probably not for a long time. if they want them pierced and can ask, i'll let them.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • It's also a culture thing for our family to do them young. I had mine done at 3 mo.. but DH and I were thinking were going to wait till she's had her vaccinations... so possibly around the 6 month mark.

  • I don't know what to do, I would like to get them done now but I think its fun to wait until she can be a part of it! I'll probably end up waiting until she is like 3.
  • I wasn't allowed to pierce my ears until I was 10 years old.  So no -- to me it is more about pierced ears being a grown up thing than it is about whether it will hurt or who takes care of it.  In my world, babies and small children don't need jewelry or anything making them look more grown-up.

  • We discussed it a couple months ago and decided not to. My mom also had mine done as a baby, and now the holes are not centred. We will let her make that decision on her own when she is old enough to decide for herself.
  • We will, but not before each of the girls turns 8. That's how old I was, you have some capacity to care for them.

  • I had both my girls done at 4 months. Never had any issues.
  • I got mine pierced arounds 13 years old. I think that is a good age, and will wait until then to let my girls do theirs, if they want to. I don't feel it is my right to decide that for them. I don't think I will even suggest it to them. I would rather wait until they ask, and then evaluate if they are old enough to make a life-long decision about it, and if they are responsible to care for it on their own. If the answer to both of those is yes, then I will be happy to let them do it. In fact, I am looking forward to taking one or both of them on a special "mom-and-me" trip to do it. I love earrings and hope I get to share that with them on day. :)

  • I just had my daughter's pierced yesterday. She cried for maybe two minutes when they did it and then hasn't complained at all since. It wasn't bad. I would much rather do it now so that I can clean them consistently and well rather than a teenager. I cannot imagine a 13 year old being as diligent with the cleaning as I am now.

  • I pierced my daughter's ears at 2 months on the dot. No big deal. It's the same things as getting shots and it's easier to keep clean and take care of at this age. I personally think it's cute and my Mom had mine pierced at 4 months. My grandmother thinks we are crazy, lol. Just depends on the person. Do what is best for you.
