Brewer Diet?

Does/Did anyone follow the brewer diet while pg? I am rereading my bradley book and it's recommended in there. I vaguely remember looking at it last time and basically just focused on ensuring I ate lots of protein (aimed for 80-100g) and lots of veggies and then just filled in with whatever I was in the mood for that day.

Just curious, because looking online I truly don't think I can physically eat that much. It's a good 800-1000+calories more per day than I typically eat. I feel like I'd constantly be stuffed to the gills. I do follow some guidelines, like I've been eating 2eggs/day (and more if you count eggs in other food, like meatballs) since long before I was pregnant because I love eggs.

Thoughts? Does anyone think it helped pregnancy/delivery and general health of mom/baby?

Re: Brewer Diet?

  • I tried to follow it.  It is a lot of food and I never ate all of their recommended amounts.  I tracked my protein and ate about 70-80 grams a day which I thought was pretty good.  I also eat pretty healthy in general so it was easy to get the veggies, fruit, and grains throughout the week. Our Bradley instructor said to eat what you could from the diet and focus on eating balanced meals so that is pretty much what I did.  I am not sure if the diet alone helped.  I also focused on staying active and walking a lot during the second and third tri.  I think the combination of diet and exercise was really helpful to me. I stayed in shape and felt great in general.

  • It's been proven to not do much. I don't think anyone has been able to replicate his results. And you're supposed to drink like a quart of milk and eat a potato a day! Madness.

"Real Food for Mother and Baby" has better guidelines about what to eat. Staying away from sugar and processed carbs, but eating a lot of fat and protein should be fine.

  • Thanks ladies!

@nosoup4u as I read the list of what you should eat every day I thought, holy hell I'll be doing nothing but eating all day. I truly don't know how someone could eat that much lol.

I try to stay away from processed foods, sugar and generally eat "whole" stuff as much as possible so I guess I'm doing fine :)

  • I think it mostly stresses out moms because it's impossible to do it "properly".

I ate whatever. My babies are fine. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, eat real food. It works out. This idea that we will get the perfect pregnancy and baby if we do everything "right" is just so much pressure.
  • I loosely followed the diet. Like Aylafsu88, I kept track of how much protein that I was getting. I also upped my amount of fresh vegetables and tried to not eat as many processed foods.
