I'm due 12/28 and my photographer just told me to contact her the first of December to see how everything is going. We'll have to schedule around Christmas, but she said she likes them around 10 days. It really just depends on when LO decides to make his/her appearance around the holidays.
BFP#1: 12/3/13 EDD 8/15/13. Heartbeat found on 12/26/13, HB gone on 1/4/13. D&C 1/7/13
BFP#2: 4/19/13 EDD 12/28/13. Team Green for pregnancy and Baby Girl arrived 12/21/13. BFP#3: 2/9/13 EDD 10/18/17. Team Green for Round 2!
I'm having my RCS on the 9th as well and we're planning on doing them the week after! Maybe that's too early? She tried to schedule us at the end of that first week! I don't think I'm going to feel up to it.
At 3 weeks was the baby still sleepy, etc? I don't want him to be really awake. LOL I'm not one of those people who wants them in a football helmet or a basket, but I don't like them all smushy, sleepy and small.
I'm glad someone asked this I was wondering the same! I was going to wait until October to call my photographer, I hope that's not too late. I live in a pretty small city and she's been able to squeeze me in for things fairly last minute before so I assume that's ok. I was just going to ask her what age she prefers them.

With DD, we had them done when she was 6 days old. There are a few pics with me in them, which I look like an exhausted whale, but DD looked beautiful! She slept through most of it and let the photographer pose her however she wanted.

DS was 14 days for his and that seemed to work well, so we're hoping for sometime around then. I'm not due until the end of the month, so hopefully by early January my photographer will be free. I didn't even think to ask yet, but maybe I should.
I've heard a lot of people say their photographer was booked for December, so the earlier you call, the better I think @bootsorhearts
Ah good point - Christmas cards and all that. Ok I'm emailing her now!

my photog likes them done between 5-10 days after birth. luckily, she's coming to our house to take them so all i really have to do is shower and put on makeup lol.
Finally, a legit good question around here! I booked our photographer already, but had no idea when these are usually done. Our photographer has a 2 day turn around time on the photos, so no matter what, it looks like we will be able to use the photos for Christmas gifts.
Now I think we need a PIP thread with your newborn photo ideas.
.
That's awesome! I won't see my photos for like 7 days after she takes them..which is after Christmas. I guess I'll just do New Year cards or just an announcement. I'm not sending out separate Christmas cards though, oh well!
Our photographer likes to do newborns at 3-10 days old. She comes to our house for an extra $30, so heck ya, I'm doing that! Our other newborn sessions have been at 5 days old and went great. Since I'm due at the end of December, her schedule is relatively open as all her Christmas appointments will be done, so she's just kind of on "stand-by" for us!

They usually like to do them in the first 10 days. We did DDs at 6 days. With the twins, it will all depend on when we get home. But we'll be doing them as soon as possible. You usually get on the photographers schedule and then contact her once they are here.
As a photographer, I tell my clients 10-17 days old. No more than 3 weeks. They are more alert and fussy then when you try to pose them. Really depends on what you want though...

I never did them with DS. We booked it already with this one. The lady we are using is very good and said she books way in advance for the beginning of December because of Christmas cards. She said to call when the baby is here and she will schedule the shoot for the first 3-12 days of life. She says she automatically schedules it for 4 hours to ensure the baby is in a deep sleep the whole time.
I don't have mine scheduled, but my bff is a photographer who doesn't book work during the week. Since I'll be on ML I'll have her do them on a weekday probably mid January.
DD was 8 days when we had hers done. For this baby, the photographer said under 10 days, and EDD is 2 DEC and the photo shoot is tentatively scheduled for 7 DEC. Both places have told us to bring a hungry baby so I can feed the wee one and then baby will sleep for the shoot.
Usually the photographers are going to want to do it before the baby hits 2 weeks. After the first two weeks babies are typically a lot more alert and you can't really get the same kinds of shots after that point.
I'm hauling my DSLR to the hospital with me and plan to have it next to my bed during recovery at home too. I will go to a studio for a pro shoot around Christmas for the first family Christmas photos, but the regular NB shots I plan to do on my own at home, God willing that RCS recovery is easier than recovery from C-section after 26 hours of labor.
Are STMs planning to have the older kid(s) or yourselves in the pictures, or just the newborn? I want to have mostly newborn pics, but I thought it would be good to get some pictures of the baby and my son. Not sure whether it's better to wait until a later time for that or do it all at once?

I'm planning on having DD in some of the pictures. I am not planning on being in them myself. I'm using the pics for a combo New Year's Card/Birth Announcement so I wanted pics of both. DD will be here for a couple of pics and then head to school with DH.
About a week or two, somewhere in there. I want her to be mostly sleeping so we can pose her in cute positions the photographer we hired comes to the house and brings lots of props and backdrops, which is nice.

Mostly newborn but a few with DS1 also. I don't really want to be in any. This is the one time I am going to spring for an expensive photographer like this. I will probably do 6 month and 1 year photos with a photographer in town who is fairly cheap but doesn't have a lot of experience. I just want to make sure I get the shots I really want right now.
I'm due Dec 19th and we're planning for a week old, our photographer is coming to us and I plan on sending out seasons greeting cards between xmas & new years
My hospital has a photographer that comea into the birth center to do sessions before you're discharged so with this lo we will do that and probably something around 6 wks for family portraits. With DD we did pics at 6 wks and I love them but its crazy how m7vh they change between day 1 and 6 weeks

I do newborn photography and prefer to do it within the first ten days of life - and I love doing it before the belly button stump falls off so I can document that fleeing mark of newness. They lose the sleepy newborn trait VERY quickly.
Same here. I notice a big difference after 14 days.
I contacted the photographer that I plan to go to and like I suspected she takes half as many newborns in December. I actually take the entire month of Dec off from shooting, in a typical year.
As a professional photographer, I will say it depends on what you want to some degree. If you want the more posey artistic newborn shots, then you definitely want to do them within the first 14 days while baby is still very sleepy and pliable. (This can usually go longer if the baby is born a little early.) If it is more of a lifestyle/candid shoot, then it is fine if they are older, but do remember that their looks change so fast those first few days and weeks.
Do make sure to contact your photographer ahead of time to see what they recommend and to get on their schedule. Especially being due in December since it can be a busy time with the holidays.
Most importantly... Be sure to contact a professional who knows how to work with babies and newborns specifically. The baby's safety is first and foremost!
